all right so as usual and these types of wood it's like impossible to find a perfect flat area so you always have to compromise and that's okay because we can now today I'm going to show you a very very easy simple tarp shelter that's pretty good at any type of weather rain snow wind and as I said very easy to set up so let's try and make our home for tonight okay so you probably can't see it but I know it'll look perfectly straight but it's got a nice slope Bowl in that way there's an area here that's manageable so obviously the first thing is to you know just clean up your ground it'll be much easier that way before we do set up the tarp so once you think your ground is cleared away quite a bit you know you'll have to readjust you'll forget stuff all you're going to need for this setup is for steaks and one rope that's it so having four steaks all you need to do is to stake the four corners so as you can see I just got four corners stake down now this is a Dede tarp three by three or ten by ten feet about now we got something else to do this is more extra work for me but you don't really have to do this right now I need to make myself a tripod now as you can see this tree was still a little bit alive but wasn't going to be a live long no forestry management 101 too many in a group nobody can flourish out of that but these little branches here that still have evergreens I will be using something else [Applause]
[Applause]
[Applause]
thing I want to tell you guys is that you absolutely don't need to make a tripod like that I had no choice because I had no branches but if you can find an area where you have you know big branches especially when you're in a hardwood forest you'll have more chance of that you won't need to do that so the four corners are staked down now you can stake them down as tight as you want or as loose as you want it depends how high you want this thing or how stealthy or how win or you know storm proof you want it now my middle I tied up the middle here on the middle tag that's why I had to make a tripod now I've got these little branches here so it doesn't you know slide down this is the reason I needed the tripod so what I'll do I'll bring it to it's pretty much the maximum that's high enough and you know just tire down and if you need any other adjustments you can do them now you can make this shelter you know if you have plenty of steaks you can stick it all around and it's gonna be like really really weatherproof windproof whatever you want to call it so I'll make a few adjustments just the corners and we'll take a look at her again so I decided not to make any adjustments I won't need to really I want to keep the shelter as simple as possible to show you now I just got four corner steak Ted and the middle tied up that's it
right there and using that as an anchor to pull it up so I guess they call it the star shelter because if you have a bird's-eye view of it it kind of looks like a star probably I don't know it's my guess but we're gonna do something else to it to make it a little bit better now one thing I want you to realize is this type of shelter is really a quick storm proof you know shelter as you can see it's not something it's a place where all you do is sleep and put your things away in case of you know it rains it's not a place where you can just I could lead to enjoy a file and go to bed this is really something that's simple but effective it's got enough room to be honest for two people you know at three by three ten by ten two people could easily sleep in here there's enough Headroom not to sit down but you know whew if I would just you know widening a little bit the size I'd be perfect look if I go on one side there's plenty of room for another one there so something else that you could do if it gets really stormy rainy windy all I have here is a branch so all you need to do is take this off and stake it from inside okay
so it's that simple now one thing I have to tell you if you do close it you're gonna have condensation which is normal so that's why I don'ts take the sides just to let airflow pass and you know avoid as much condensation as possible but when it comes to cold rainy winter days where it could be dangerous just close it it's better to have a little bit of condensation than that cold wet wind coming in and taking the heat away but you know what yeah I'm gonna have to compromise a bit and I'm gonna have to sleep like this sideways but I'm gonna keep this open so I'm gonna make it you know not temporary but that's why I left my tripod long enough so I can tie another rope so I don't have to deal with this you know being in the way when I go in and out the shelter but I decided to tie the second one just because I can that's what's cool about the tripod just to give me a little bit more Headroom and all I need to do is tie this to the tripod the tip of it and we're set for our filter so there you go as simple as that
let's call it a modified star shelter I have nothing in the way of me going in and out I've got more Headroom it's big spacious yeah ready for bad weather but they're not announcing any I have to be honest it's not a shelter that I use very often just because I like you know to be more open but for different circumstances
it's it'd be the one I'd use you can you know put all your stuff your bags and everything and I would definitely stake all the thigh if it'd be a big storm tie this down and stake it and this falls down it just closes completely let me show you it closes a little bit better just because
just because I'm using the second come on you we're all getting mixed up here just because I use the second one here it would close better and give me more room inside if I did have to close it what's going on with this not too much rope oh come on come on get over here get over here okay so you see I could stick that right down now it builds more of a wall just to keep some nice warm air in there and some beautiful condensation all right do this again
[Applause]
I I positioned my tarp in the kind of the diagonal fashion because I'll be sleeping that way to get most of it now I'm still using the snug pack I always forget base camp or expedition pad now they're announcing way below freezing like - for while shouldn't say - for cuz it's different let's say four degrees below freezing and that is not made for that so I'm going to put this pad to the extreme either I'll be having a good night's sleep or a very bad one but that's besides the point I still wanted to test it more extremely personally for me now again if you do have that one you can add you know the the big foam pads for the wintertime and something else what I like is that it has a pump so it's much better especially during the winter time to use the pump because if you blow it with your mouth all that moisture that's coming out of your body goes into the sleeping pad and well if it freezes you're gonna have ice inside the pad so it's not going to do its job now this is the snug packs look back what sleeper expedition you know what I'm becoming really I'm a little bit sad about snug pack just because and I'm not the only one just look online and it's not all their products but their quality control now is really bad on certain products and you know it's too bad cuz they have a great reputation or used to but now it's really going down this sleeping bag is really comfortable and warm but when I got it right behind the head here this seam here and I can still see it I had a whole bunch of material coming out of it it was all white I said what something else that I sadly really dislike is the zipper it's so hard I mean my other snug pack no problem now I know when they get bigger thee they tend to want to catch but this one I don't know if it's a cheaper zipper or something but when I'm outside like this outside of the bag I mean I can do it but inside it's always a struggle when you're inside the VAT of the bag to try and close it especially now I know if you can see this is obviously a mummy bag okay over here when you get to this part important part where it turns that's right that's like a battle so sadly I mean I'm still gonna use this bag but I'm not recommending it just because of quality control the zipper is not great it could be a lot better I know those nice big zippers have we seen in the past it's too bad cuz it's a great bag but this is not going in my list
so I'll take a little break here and yes I'm peeling my Apple all the good stuff is in the peel yeah well this feeling here is so full of paraffin and all kinds of preservatives that it's like chewing on wood when you eat it but what can I say Granny Smith is something I like anyway I've got myself a little dilemma here about fire
I will definitely gonna need a fire but this is full of moss and as in frozen yet enough like in the winter especially if it doesn't snow early and it really freezes you know this could freeze like four to five feet feet deep but not everywhere cuz sometimes it snows early and stuff
there's snow access and insulation and but it's not frozen enough so either I try and find some rocks and make a good base which that would be fine which I don't know if I'll be able to find rocks here or I brought the fire box maybe I'll just use the fire box not just for cooking but you know all night I don't know I know if it's gonna be enough there's always like a 20 kilometer win you know in the fall that happens a lot but we'll see it's still early okay so I found some rocks in an old creek bed they were very difficult to find because of all of the debris like the leaves and a lot of them are frozen together but I think I'll be good I just need to choose as you can see that's all rocks there I mean there's a lot of big ones but I like just flat ones like that but as I was walking along here look what I found now there's no way in the world that I would have thought of coming here if I wouldn't walk in this little dead creek but sadly I think anyway check it out look at the size of that boys and girls that's the size of a basketball right there but sadly this tree this yellow birch has been looks like it's been dead for quite a while so not sure if it's still good look at the size of that Wow some there some there and there's some there what in the world and if it's still good well I'm gonna need to collect it cuz it's gonna waste anyway but this is the size of my hand here if you can see the middle part is would just just around it [Applause]
of course it's frozen so I'm gonna come with the axe and use the back end of it cuz it's just some here too and it does look good here oh boy okay well I wasn't planning on that at all that coming out of there look at that okay we're gonna come back after doing our rocks see if we can harvest some of this if it's still good so walking off the beaten path is often a rewarding I just said that you can write that in your book if you want no copyright collecting rocks [Applause]
and chaga is not part of my plans none at all
that is extra work oh man yeah he's nice that'd be a shame to waste it so it's treated about the falling around anyway this way I found to collect Java you don't have this you use a rock but I never use a sharp end just because you don't even need to dull your a hatchet or your axe real quick and just like this slowly
man
your waist
I don't know I'm gonna have to probably come back
we're folks
awesome this right there oh look at these can you see that you know what I took this just on time I'm gonna have to make I don't know how many trips a lot well you can bid on something I'm having some fresh chucker tea tonight folks oh gosh probably have to come back just for a trip for all that my goodness this is the biggest harvest I've ever had yeah good stuff nice and spongy like cork excellent health beautiful stuff
whoo okay so that's it man a lot of it there's still some under that tarp going right up to there so need to fashion this up to bring back to camp
[Applause]
just gonna break it in smaller pieces [Applause]
much easier to separate that's fresh wow this is not a tarp this tarp something used for just about anything don't worry about it see those are nice chunks that I can more easily bring home with Oh over here bud
[Applause]
oh nice perfect sizes there you go [Applause]
perfect I usually do this in the big towel what I'll do is at home I'll put in a wrapping a big towel wrap it completely and just smash it it's wrapped so pieces are not flying everywhere but here I'm in the wood so there you go maybe you just when you wait for it to become dry it's hard to break it would be a little easier if it wouldn't be if I'd have solid ground I wouldn't be jumping like that there you go perfect there
[Applause]
hey stay near okay done so those are more manageable pieces you know baseball size give or take hand size easier to take care at home or whatever you wanted to use it for especially tees so how am I gonna hold this out of the woods you must be wondering there you go I always always bring a empty disposable plastic bag you know usually to bring my my junk out when they cook stuff and I don't want to mix it up with my bag and smells food I do have a food bag but the garbage goes in here so this is my only choice or my only way is to hopefully hopefully this bag is gonna hold up it's gonna be full of yummy yummy stuff look at that bringing everything everything everything
[Applause]
okay let's not make a mess here let's not make a mess Bart whoa
whoa got some more you got some more that's it come on I got more chunks in here
there I'm actually gonna need this tarp cos I don't know 10 pounds maybe oh I got 10 pounds easy okay let's tie this up okay so this will do I'll be able to have my fire little cracks here and there it doesn't really matter that's not going to affect there's no danger it's big enough it's perfect so I'm happy with it so I'm going to use all the other things I cut not putting on the side because I forgot my chair and I'm gonna try and make maybe a giant fajita or something for those you know those big glowing cushions so I have a place to sit down from the fire [Applause]
[Applause]
[Applause]
okay so the fajitas done wish I could eat it because I'm hungry but so I tied like this and then I tied like that oh yeah
of course I've got stuff on me right now well it's not the couch at home but a lot better than being right on the ground
even though I'm squishing it I'm still uh a good three inches so I'll be perfect
okay it's time to get the fire box out I think we'll have a coffee cuz I've been running like a wild rabbit since I've been here for four hours four hours of running like a wild rabbit filming that's okay
that's what I do okay well if a coffee's gonna be good [Applause]
[Applause]
so where we say we hit the iron while it's hot well let's hit the water while that's hot - hi I think I'm gonna need my other gloves [Applause]
[Applause]
[Applause]
so obviously the wind is shifting usually until it's okay I want it for the most part that's I was testing it a bit with the fire box when I do make the real fire tonight I'm gonna close this end here look two reasons I want to protect my sleeping bag and the pad and I want to keep the smoke out so I'm happy I put up that other so I'll have plenty of room when I go to bed and when I do go to bed I want to put the fire out and let this guy up again now this is gonna look kind of weird I know I know I have to be careful now these are this is a quick lunch I was too lazy oh these are it's a pizza submarine as long as I can get the bottom and the sauce hot I don't care about the rest I'm hungry I don't want to burn it so I'll just take a look at it once in a while smells good though a little bit burnt but does the trick I like that take the free heat while I can [Applause]
[Applause]
all right so something else that I've been playing around with of course I haven't played tons but is the Ogawa boreal 21 bucks aw now this is a beautiful leather sheath from Crazy Horse I think and carry it it's nice and slim put in your backpack you can unhook it anyway very well-made sheath now this is optional I took this just because I want it to last but you know canoe trips and stuff
the silkies are great saw but as it has its limits especially in the north here and I don't feel like getting that expensive what he called katana so I looked around for buck saws there's so many now and you see the name there this is proudly made in Canada yes sir very lightweight 21 inch now he's got several I want to try as other saws or blades he's got for dry wood multi-purpose and this is the what they call the aggressive Sydney Rancher 2 so far it's going pretty well but I want to I really want to use and try the dry wood and multi-purpose but what's cool about this saw is that you can't lose anything okay just take my time here let's go there so everything is well concealed in one piece just put it in and that's it so when you need it what a great idea this guy had I'm telling ya it's so it's so simple whoa and that's not going anywhere he's got different colors and of course being Canadian I want to support him because it's a great piece and both of these are going on my list for sure it's just so awesome on the sheet there just slide that in your backpack looks awesomely cool it's very well made so it's going in the list in the description below for sure this is a winner [Applause]
well now I have to say that I'm comfortable and I got some back problems and I can't just sit anymore normally so this seals the deal okay so all my would prep is done everything is done it's already getting colder it's close to zero it's going to be dark in two hours I was planning on you know carving carving a spoon but now with all the rocks and Achaia and the wood I think I'm just gonna relax right now no carving I'm all set just got to install my little lantern light up the fire when it's time and though later we'll be having supper in the dark obviously at six o'clock this it's the Sun is set it's gone in these woods well it just gets dark yep I'm very anxious to see how that snuck back tad is going to do tonight all right so it doesn't show but it's getting kind of dark and I'm getting kind of cold cuz I stopped moving so I need to get this fire going early and to stay warm
gosh I love fire especially when we need it right yes it's going to unseal my bones my friends all the difference in the world still not going to make too much of a big one foot mm-hmm as you can see the wind is not going the direction was posted well there you go fire fire
there you go on fire [Applause]
now that it's caught the fire calm down it's nuts sparkling or sparking and hopefully the wind will stay just like that or southward so I can relax here and get just the heat and no smoke and I'm not going to make it much bigger than that because I want to have enough wood until at least ten o'clock I don't need it to keep me warm but they need to keep me warm now it'll be completely dark in half an hour right now just this little thing here put my target right away just slowly wait for it then no rush but it's going to be good no I'm I reminded of the Christian struggles you guys know what I mean those that are born-again believers we have trials and tests and tribulations and when you read the scriptures you shouldn't be surprised you know because of our faith it's to be expected but it makes us grow it makes us stronger
makes us understand things and as Charles Spurgeon said once a true soldier is only made in battle and there's a lot of truth in that and spiritually we can apply it we learn from it we trust God and we conquer spiritually that's how we have our victories is just hanging on to our Lord and Savior through those difficult moments well let me tell you the thing that I love the most about any test trial and the Christians life is that there's always an end to it always and even though some people suffer all their lives and die suffering if you're a born-again Christian it's an end it's the end of your suffering and the beginning of glory so there's always an end so don't be discouraged if you're going through hardships right now trust God he will make a way he always does but if you suffer without him and you die without him well that's another story your sufferings will be just the beginning
okay perfect
get him out of there let that steep a little bit and what we have for supper you can see that some homemade chili cheer that cheer that okay so I'm gonna have to keep a close eye on that don't want to burn my chair sorry for the smoke folks decide to go towards you come on are you done now so there you go Chile nice warm Chile not quite warm yet well I apologize for having so much smoke in there you go thank you so much okay who got some chili beans I'm corn some carrots onions garlic oh are you yeah I hope I'm in my there hi are you waving back at me yeah cuz that light is it's cool so you guys can see but at the same time it's blinding me
the fire gets going again it'll stop smoking
so minus 5 Celsius is what is it 25 in ER 28 anywhere seriously you fire or funny I changed positions there's no smoke go in there a while go there we go I must be in the frame I'm gonna leave that bad boy close like that there's enough draught air all around oh they'll probably be some condensation maybe not so bad what's up I don't want to close it completely and I don't want to leave it open Wow there we go now this is called life my dear friends a nice warm fire on a cold night well not extremely cold cold enough be warm by the fire being warm by a homemade chili sure that I guess I can take my kneepads off now man these things are useful but you're getting a good beating though hey I know how long it's gonna last anyway well what can I say it gets night and gets night gets dark early so not much we can do at night I know I say it all the time but no showing the fire and just badly my mouth it's not the greatest of things so I'm not sure I might take the battery out of the camera and put it in my pocket make sure I have enough for tomorrow
plus I have a lovely tea that's coming oh boy oh and by the way the chaga if you do harvest first time you do when you bring these home don't leave it in the bag it's full of moisture and you're gonna have some molds you'll ruin it so make sure you spread it everywhere in a dry place until it's really dry before you store it okay well at least there's not a big wind oh thank god big winds just ruin everything like the last strip you know what I was afraid of a tree falling on me all the trees around me of course we always look they all look safe but doesn't always mean they are especially in the fall sometimes the bigger trees are hard to see if they're good or not when the leaves are off and howling like that at the top trees are going like this my mind was constantly on the tree more than anything else so that and the wind and plus the wind added lot more cold Oh No
that's not good so anyway if the balls sticky if that mat keeps me warm even in these colder conditions that it's not meant to do I'm gonna have a good night's sleep here okay so I'm sorry again for babbling and not knowing what to say all right you're the only people I can talk to right now in the middle of the woods it's pitch black and you know that fall is really in I hardly hear any birds even during the day it's becoming very silent
so whatever pass us tonight I'm gonna hear it good there's a moose trail here there's a lot of deer so try and not camp in the moose trail if you can another thing to remember or any animal okay that's it I'm sorry I apologize this so long what 20 minutes and night filming I'm out did you guys hear that some coyotes around usually I'm used to I'm used to hearing coyotes especially when they've got to kill they they're all gonna Yap and Yap and Yap you know how the app but this must be the Alpha because he was the only one did you I hope you heard that because what's cool is that like was filming the moon at the same time oh gosh I hope you heard that it was so cool then I heard it again and I tried to video it not even frame here then I tried to sorry when I tried to video with the sound because it's coming anyway from even though I tell you which way but you know there's a lot of deer here and I've showed I've showed you carcasses and past videos and stuff so that was really cool that shot of the moon and the howling at least three four times very clear but it was like more towards in the back of me so maybe the microphone didn't pick it up I don't know but I hope I hope you guys heard it that's cool all right if ever they do Yap again well I'll try and capture it on camera if they don't eat me up you guys there what it looked like it was a full moon then a bit of better could not have been any better
picture perfect sound for me anyway that was a nice experience I love it okay I think it's time for tea folks you guys see me in there somewhere yeah as far as cool finally the finally the wind is going the right way like it was supposed to south or I mean from the south so perfect okay oh yeah baby that's my color you guys see that of course I turn around and then there you go
I'll leave the chocolate in there now through the years a lot of people have asked me well what does chocolate taste like well my answer is it tastes like toggle no but seriously I'll tell you my opinion what it tastes like if you've ever I know drank some birch sap you know in the spring it takes very similar to it I mean the chocolate peas from the same source it's not exactly the same but very similar just to give you a little idea this is going to be very good in my belly see if I can get a clean piece of something here get I'll probably be good for one more shot hey this is hot yeah I'll be good for one more shot I'm gonna have another tea with this I'm just gonna leave it here for now and slowly drink my tea it's so calm and peaceful I can almost hear you guys breathe through that screen
just gotta love this let me tell you one last thing
this fajita seat is very comfortable actually it's more comfortable than my bought seat that I have to carry so comfortable that if I'd have enough firewood I'd probably sleep right here sadly I don't and I know when the fire dies the cold will wake me up so into the sleeping bag I go not right away though
okay so it's the last of my wood you know just this distance away from it I can feel the chills boys and girls oh and that moon is beautiful so you're going to get dressed change into my up there change into my sleeping clothes and that's gonna be it for today and tonight so hopefully we'll stay warm tonight lights out so I'm just showing you the inside the inside of the shelter you know what's so cool about my phone I'm recording with my phone when you record there's an automatic light that comes nice and warm my stuff there plenty of room yeah I love this phone you record there's an automatic light now of course I haven't been in here long so no condensation will see tomorrow morning well so far I'm toasty warm I had a problem with my feet you know getting in changing you know that stuff but yeah I'm not feeling any cold from my back or anything we'll see during the night what happens but first glance it looks pretty cool so anyway I have to say good night [Applause]
good morning to all my good friends around this beautiful planet or maybe it's nighttime
I don't know middle of the day well this morning I checked and it's minus 6 ok let me try and it's 6 below the freezing point 6 degrees below the freezing point I know if that makes sense so that way either Fahrenheit or Celsius I guess would be easier to understand instead of saying minus 6 or 22 23 so Fahrenheit it's 6 degrees under the freezing point there ok so how did the pad perform well not great it's not made for that it's not made it's not even rated to the freezing point I think it's a three-season so you know minus 6 and it wasn't cold everywhere on the pad just a few places but of course it had to be wherever the back is most surface you know and all that good stuff I slept a little bit but not that great because of it so definitely need to bring you know one of those thick wood inch pads there they sell now with a reflective side there everyone seems to be using that but anyway I'm not in a rush I'm not a big winter camper I love the winter I love the snow
but I rather you know a prospector tent hot tent now that's my kind of camping because like everybody else the thing that I despised the most about cold weather camping is waking up in the morning oh my goodness I don't know if I can continue doing this it's getting harder and harder to wait to just get out and that freezing cold okay there's my complaining so we'll see time for a sip if I don't burn myself oh that was just on the verge but it's good okay this morning I really have no time at all I have to hurry up and pack up got some stuff to do and well it was an enjoyable day enjoyable night and I'm really happy you guys came along it's gonna be a short morning video because I'm gonna close it right here and you know you guys are the best thank you for your awesome support and everything you know this channel is 95% supported by you the viewers so you own this channel as much as I do but anyway I'm really grateful and remember to go out enjoy the wilderness have fun enjoy life that's what it's all about but most of all serve God get saved and be faithful to him
that's even better when you our priorities are our you know when our priorities are where they're supposed to be the rest falls the rest follows there's bumps in the roads of obviously but the rest follows okay I need to finish my coffee this is Mike from gusto [Music]
