Video Transcription
well you're gonna need to forgive me this is a windy day and hopefully it won't affect the sound but I'd like to thank everyone on my video first aid kit I mean you guys are great a lot of people with experience gave me a lot of good valuable information and I really appreciate that
now I have more of a sense of first-aid kits
it took awesome things and I added some others and all that good stuff so any of you newbies concerning first-aid kits I highly recommend you watch my video on my first-aid kit now the video itself is not important don't need to watch it but you read those comments there's a lot of good information it's gonna help you a lot so today oh man you gotta love the smell of the fall okay so today I'm on a little different trail that I'm used to walking on I don't face an old log road or something but maybe not just give you a quick view here there you go which walk with me for a second there man
you guys need to absolutely go out this time of year absolutely Oh take a look at this it snowed the other day and there's still some here in the woods yeah get out take a walk with your friend your family this is the greatest time to be out here anyway so you're gonna need to be in this video a little patient with me before I show you the knife a special video special knife for me I need to tell a little story first so bear with me please
so
need to tell you a little story now I may be off by years and dates and all that stuff but you'll get the point we've done this I'd say about four years ago maybe give or take i subscriber of mine phone to me now a good friend and he talked to me about starting a knife making business you want to become a knife maker and he wanted to design a knife of my own so I said Wow you know that's pretty rare that the knife maker is going to want to design something else but his designs so we know we started talking about stuff and everything was pretty much settled so I didn't hear from David maybe for about two years then he followed me back or I don't know if it's email or phone I can't remember two years after that and he explained to me he went through you know a lot of difficulties and hardships and a lot of things going on in his life so we started talking again about the knife design and everything was settled again so after that I hadn't here heard from him for another year so I'd say I don't know maybe beginning of this year at the end of last year he phoned me up again
and something horrible had happened to him he got run over by an SUV and he came this close from dying he was broken all over the place anyway I'm not gonna go into details but he still wanted to make this knife for me I said okay Wow David has one good working arm one good eye he's
constant pain all day long I said David you don't need to do this and well he did I'm so very grateful talk about perseverance and keeping your word so that being said my hats off to you brother I mean you are a prime example of the man I should become even though you went through impossible difficulties suffering I mean I'm not here to detail everything but you know what you went through and everything you still need to go through you overcame and you still are overcoming each day by God's grace and that is the ultimate example someone could give me I mean your knife is priceless don't get me wrong but your example is much more valuable so from the heart thank you okay so we're almost there still need a few things to talk about let's talk about this knife first now remember what you're gonna see is not something new this was an idea I had four or five years ago maybe more who knows no not more than four or five years but since then you know there's so many great knife makers out there with great designs and you know they came up with it was bound to happen but it's still a little bit different and I have to be honest with you I can't say really that it's my design as I took or I was inspired by the design of three knives or three knife makers or anyway take it like you want so I guess the inspiration is to them and it's because of them I decided to take these three that I absolutely love and try and put them in one knife I was wanting to keep a old traditional look and a great concept of knives you know something that works great and it's been tested through time but with modern materials that will you know last longer and are made tougher now the three that I was inspired by obviously if you've known me the would lure second would be the pouco and third would be hailey from Norway so out of these three and a little bit of my little ideas not too many this is a knife we came up with okay so here's the knife the raven bush knife give you a quick look there now don't mind the water stone marks that's me I was too lazy to make it all nice and shiny for you guys
so that's the design quick specs four-inch blade four and a quarter inch handle now most of us four inches is quite sufficient
so a little quarter of an inch longer is just perfect in case you have a little larger hands the steel is CPM 3v now I know there's a lot of arguments concerning this steel this is a super steel it's not the hardest out there but it's a good one I've had this type of Steel on another knife that I've used a lot and it's my best steel in all my knives it absolutely keeps an edge for a very long time and concerning rust it's really tough it's not like your other high carbon Steel's it's a little tougher and it's a strong steel now obviously there's this argument about it being harder to sharpen it is a little harder but it's not that bad I don't have much of a problem with it especially when you're in the field I mean any type of steel or any type of knife you bring in the field if you don't wait for it to become really dull just a little bit of stropping and you'll bring it back we've got to take care of them more often than wait for it to get dull and this is no different with this steel the other steel that I have is on my gun II hunter and even in the feel a little bit of stropping boom shaving sharp so it's not that bad yes it's a little harder than your typical 1095 ro1 or a - but it's not that bad so that's the steel we decided to choose because it's tough keeps a long edge or a longer edge than any other and even for us
it's absolutely great I mean it's going to rust but it's just that I can't find the right word to tell you what it is but it's it's it's better than the others okay so obviously the would lower clone you can see that it's based on that it has a longer no starts pretty it starts like just about the middle of the blade and comes down drops down here which makes a very strong tip now the thickness is about give or take 3/16 of an inch the high grind okay that's what I was warning again based on the pouco knives most pouco knives let me show you it's a higher scan D than your normal wood lore and because of it it's a good slicer not only does it still have it's Scandinavian good woodworking type of grind but it's slice as well one thing about knives what I prefer in a knife the most important thing know there's a lot of important things in knives and we all have different opinions and all that and that's all good but one important thing and it doesn't really matter if the knife is made out of gold or if it's really expensive
if the knife does not slice well for me I don't really care for it if I have to struggle each time I want to whittle something or take a little chunk off it's not good so that's why I wanted a high scandi now this is about 10 degrees okay on both sides so 20 degree but you still have that you know we know that scanning grinds work well in wood you got your little carvings or whatever you do it's it's great something else about 3v that people complain about is the chipping well like any other knives if you use a knife as a knife and not an axe you won't have that problem case closed you can I mean chipping can happen with even the softer blades softer students so if you use it properly you won't have that problem of chipping plunge line is practically perfect look at that David really took its time on this it's it's absolutely exactly what I wanted the pins are titanium and lanyard hole is not in the middle it's slower just to be out of the way a little bit that's David's idea the scales is g10 and it's not polished to the max cuz polished to the max you know how slipper it is but this still grips really well now the handle shape is based a little bit on some Norway type knives like hilly okay your typical round knives round round handles you know with the finger grooves a coke bottle shape I mean I love those they lock into place and that's absolutely fantastic one little problem it's not a big problem but if your hands are a little bit bigger than usual or a little bit smaller than usual even that finger you know the shape and all sometimes will not be too comfortable okay it will be comfortable once like this but as you work with it you notice that the knife tends to want to move also another little problem with round handles is it's gonna want depending on how you use the knife it's gonna sometimes want to slip on you like this and because of it instinctively you want to squeeze harder so it doesn't do that and that will fatigue your arm a lot faster now I wanted this it's not completely square
okay so I'll completely square it off so it's still there's no sharp lines so it's still very comfortable but at the same time it's square enough or rectangular enough that any position you use it you always have a good grip on it okay this this produces a good grip these edges here so being that it's not how could I say it more of a simple design okay it's gonna fit most hands okay because there's not you know finger grooves here and the swelling there and all that it's more of a just a simple design that I believe is going to fit any type of hand of course if you have very very large hands maybe this will not be good for you but anyway that was my my thought on this anyway something else that as first time I've seen and I think it's a good idea from David of course that's his logo right there he actually put the type of steel on this on the blade itself which is really really cool because you know we all have lots of knives and sometimes you put this away and you try another knife then another knife and you pick this up again and then okay what was this deal about this one I think that's a very good idea David putting the three V on there awesome job so that's pretty much it pretty much it I absolutely absolutely love it David you you've done over my expectations over my expectations okay so that being said I'm gonna show you one little last knife it's the prototype from David it's a hunting knife so don't go too far so here's the prototype design of his hunting knife about a three inch blade four and a half inch handle walnut again and three V it's a flat ground grind it looks like there's a secondary bevel there but there's none really it's just because it's been sharpened or dropped but that looks like another great knife and its purpose is for hunting so it's more squared off you know so if you use it sideways got good grip very cool now obviously if you do have some woodwork to do with this again its 3/16 it's got a nice point beautiful point look at that yeah if you were going to use this for woodworking obviously this would work very well too the only thing that I would modify on this is I would you know maybe round off a little bit not too much the these sides here because if I do some push cuts I'm just need to do a few and this is gonna go into my hand I won't be comfortable but I mean this is a hunting knife so what am I to say about that he calls this the okay I have to pronounce this properly 'requiem 'requiem hunter yeah me and my English even in French I can't speak so don't worry about guys so another great knife of his and look at there's a little different here he goes the other way I like you know stuff different ideas with the scales instead of being straight here that's pretty cool love it okay so David I have no words brother I guess I can say you the man and that's the very truth you're another great example of where there's a will there's a way right and never give up and again I can't thank you enough for that and for you guys watching again thank you for your patience I know this took a little bit of time you know I was talking maybe more than anything else but I'm very grateful for your patience and thank you for watching this is microplush Matt Barnes you guys take care
