okay this is Mike Barton from bush-rat barns welcome to the very first episode of questions and answers okay so let's get into the first few questions sorry for the lighting and maybe the noise of the rain but in this point in time I don't have much of a choice so the very first question is from mr. Charlie press this question is what what do I take I should have brought my bushcraft glasses what do I take on a typical day hike and what are the editions based on the time of the year well that's a good question being that I make videos every time pretty much I come out it's hard to really I don't have a specific kit because each video is different I may need different tools and different stuff so it's hard to really say what type of gear that I bring but for a typical just a day hike I can tell you one thing that's pretty much in all my bags or I'll change it if I go on a day hike I will certainly have a knife I'd have a small saw I'd also have my canteen kit it's full of water I'd have more than one way of having you know making fire either ferrocene rod lighters all that good stuff and they fire a first-aid kit that would be pretty much my you know my gear for it a simple couple of hours and of course the water and food [Applause]

what I would add to a typical day hike depending on the time of year obviously rain gear a tarp if I know that it's gonna be raining and also some winter clothes during the winter because remember that you have to be well dressed according to the time of the year because that's your very first shelter so I thank you Charlie for your for your question a second question from Jay G can you camp without store-bought food catch and cook well that's becoming pretty popular the catch and cook I see it on a lot of videos and it's pretty interesting and answer your question sure I mean I have several videos well it depends what you mean by catch and cook if it's like I'm going fishing I catch my fish and I cook it alright go small game hunting and I cook it yeah I have several videos of that but you know what I come here very often and I need more than that I need some comfort food so store store-bought food is also part of my outing out here it's very important so thank you Jay G for your question so a third question that I'm going to answer is from Sarah scold Miss Sarah

and her question is will you be going to Haiti I've been to Haiti maybe three times since the earthquake I think it was 2010 maybe anyway when I got back we spent 10 days there that was two weeks after the earthquake and we went for you know different reasons were there with all maybe 10 American doctors at least were in the mountains to bring some aid and comfort and relief and of course the gospel when I got back from my 10 days I was extremely ill for 10 months I'll remember those days and then even until today I have to be careful with certain things because it tends to want to come back but it's no way like it used to be about three years ago give or take something else came in my life concerning my health and because of it I can't really go back to Haiti I wouldn't be able to tough even one day in those circumstances where we go anyway sometimes I'll be honest I have a hard time going through a day here in my comfort zone Canada so to answer your question for now I am NOT going back to Haiti unless the Lord changes things and he can but for now I can't so thank you very much Sarah for your question okay so I will answer a fourth question this is from miss Laurie King she wants to know my opinion on woman going alone in the wilderness is it wise or not well it doesn't really matter if you're a woman or a man what's wise or not is you need to be prepared and know a little bit what you're doing

and it's not just about skills it's about knowing what to do and what not to do in different circumstances so yeah of course you can go alone in the woods but like any beginner you know what I have a video on fear I'm gonna link it at the end of this video you take a look if you didn't see it should you know help some of you especially when you're starting you know to want to go alone in the woods what I would recommend doing is first of all you know get the main skills practice them you know like fire and an ATAR from our tent all that good stuff

and start in your backyard start with a tent and you know bring everything as if you're spending a whole day a whole night and the next day it doesn't matter what people think or they're looking at you it's none of their business it's you trying to build confidence being alone out there you know bring food and you're gonna have to build a fire and do that a couple times when that's done again in your backyard though with the tarp tarp is different you don't feel as safe you know psychology psychology things I call it psycho

you know sick you lock lucky stuff what there's another word I can't pronounce it but mentally oh there you go that's that's that's better mentally you don't feel a secure so after the tent you guys go out with a tarp and again bring all the gear that you're gonna think you're gonna need food water fire stuff everything is gonna need okay just pretending you're in the middle of nowhere but you're in your backyard start setting up your your your tarp and do that a couple of times a week if you can and different weather and different temperature

now once you're confident of continent with that being outside and knowing how to set up a tarp and a tent and your fire skiers are good and cooking food and all that good stuff again go out with someone first go - I don't know National Park go spend one night and as you do it often you you'll be confident you won't be as scared because you know when you start these things it's like anything else a new job it's the unknown and we're all a little bit wary of done known because we don't know what's gonna happen or what's going on but I think that's a good base that you can do and it doesn't matter if you're male or female okay no I don't I don't see it the difference there there you can learn skills and build confidence and experience and all that stuff and after that you'll see once you're used to your gear and you know what to bring and you'll be confident not just in your skills but in your gear and the experience of very new stuff that's why I asked you to go with someone else at the beginning your skills will bring you experience and things that oh I shouldn't be doing that in this circumstance and oh this is what I should be doing so it's building up your toolbox let's say and once that's done try one trip doesn't have to be too far but you know alone and then you'll see it you'll love it so thank you very much Laurie for your question

right so for this episode I guess we'll leave it at for questions you know what what I'd like to do concerning the questions like what I bring during my you know a day day hike catch and cook stuff types of food or what are your what could you bring to the table

concerning someone who's starting or this question the last question also that Lori asks you know I want to I'm interested in in all your comments concerning these questions what do you think about it what do you bring what's your experience what what should people do not do and that's not just gonna be good for me it's gonna be good for those that ask the questions and anybody else you know interaction that's when we want so yeah let's do that so thanks again for your questions and hopefully we'll have that second episode coming soon this is Mike from bushcraft parts bye [Music]
