nice winter cold day I thought that the first video of 2014 we go on a little hike and cook something up for you guys stay tuned
what I'm doing right now is decided I'm going to make my fire here so I'm just compacting the snow a little bit because I want to keep my fire from sinking you know not too fast we're going to be here about three to four hours so that's why I'm doing it and you know rain in the winter is not good at all the only thing is good for is that we're not sinking right up to here and as we walk in the woods where there's no trail it's nice and compact now as I said before because because I'll be here for about 3-4 hours I need to make a vase like this so that my fire doesn't sink in too deep because I want it for 3-4 hours if it was just to boil coffee just a simple base sometimes not even and you're all set this in case you're wondering why I done it like this because we'll be cooking and by the way if ever you're stuck or you want to fire all night to last and you can't dig right through because it's the best thing because you know you'll lose your fire but let's say you're in this scenario and you can dig through it's too hard and you want to fire to last all night it's possible what you need to do is get some live trees now I know people don't like that but if you're stuck you have no choice 4 to 6 inches in diameter and make yourself a nice base of green wood bigger than that your intended fire and you build your fire on that and it should last you for the night just a little tip
all right so today we're going to cook well something simple we're going to have banach and a meal we haven't cooked in a while one of my favorites now hmm as you can see the panic will be cooked in the pan this time because it's not my usual you know sometimes I cook it on the stick but because of the winter time it doesn't cook even evenly and all that and as you can see the Bannock is a lot thinner than usual because I don't want to you know I don't have this fire for that long so I want this to cook faster than in your normal times so that little piece of batting there should be ready within half an hour and 15 minutes before we'll be cooking the main dish well while we're waiting for that Bannock to cook I thought I'd show you these I got you know these this year had a pair before and I don't know what happened to them and I want another pair this is what they call Bear Paw I always like the Bear Paw for you know compared to the one with the long stick in the back for two reasons because it you know it it takes more surface on the snow I like today it's it's perfect it's fine because it's rain you know and froze up and also I like it because when you're walking more in the bush it tends to not hook up on the trees as much you know you got a tree when you hit it it's easier to get off of it and you're longer stick now I got these this this fall we visited a huron village or reserve you know whatever you call it and they make it there so i decided to take it from them see this I can't see nothing on that camera sons against me button anyway you should see village you rot these are made of ash you know cos that's easily and obviously your sin you in the middle so I'm quite pleased with them
but someday like any leather straps here my others they always snap after a while I'm going to get some more modern straps and last longer but overall these are just great especially when you're walking you know where there's no trail at all so while we're waiting for that I'm going to give you a few clips of that rock village that we visited this fall after that we'll come back mania mix copayment nns from Sofia Mia Veon adopted on SME latisha are gonna give navigation keys of an air cadet yet guess who one evolution demanded is adopted he considered on junior soon accepted retire let Wendy carry Greta Lopez answer which is a desolate you physique hello mobile example easy damage innovation
yeah captive attention so foreign Yogi's rooftop so yeah leave it well maybe you've noticed that our friend doesn't especially look like in a in England but it's normal they were three hundred Indians in the the Lakes region in the Ontario region in 1650 and when the three hundred of them came here I they were lot of marriages between the white and the Indians and the adapted a lot of child too so that's why today many and when that doesn't look as an apnea the facial traits of the Indians right so this is called the longhouse where many families used to live huge very big let's go take a look inside it's all covered in cedar how's your fire pits you've got three fire pits one two three it's even got some skunk fire here oh this is pretty oh look at this nice work see how the bed is done curious to see I don't know if you can see anything in here okay it's just a few poles alright so this is what they call the longhouse okay so just to give you a little overall this is very interesting as long houses be about 70 feet long by about 30 30 to 40 feet wide and you could have between 30 and 50 people and as you've heard each each fire would identify one family now these fires here you see are cooking fires and to eat this place up they'd have bigger fires in between the cooking fires that's why it's interesting to see the height of the beds about this high so that they receive as much heat as possible and the reason why you've heard this is so I to keep the smoke away from them so very interesting so there were two ways of conserving to me the first one was to smoke it and the other one to dry it at the Sun so as you can see we have
two methods here a dog can quickly the leap was a mystery what is it Klaus I believe what you said I'm a dedicated flow Condon young is directly it's automatic instead upon Judah longer nice cool and cool on a solid a belief a movement we're just going to give you a better look of the longhouses and how they were set up what we saw there in the and getting very interesting it's actually a trap to trap dears as you can see the little dears there I would take about they said what 10 days for 25 men to build this and you know see it's like a funnel kind of a thing I've least obviously they you know go in the woods and start pushing their the deer in there and they could catch well the guy said as in five weeks around 120 deer you know to smoke them and all that so a lot of work in front we gotta you mungus you mungus TP I'm sorry for the backround noises or some more construction of this site going on so you might hear some some noises let's take a look at the inside this is awesomely big ohh some stuff they made certainly out of birchbark beautiful crafts
and see very well need to go fast because I'm not sure if I'm allowed filming this Indian Act very cool
that's awesomely beautiful this TV is just simply huge there's different paints to do these I'm gonna hide hey chief nice to meet ya so that was pretty cool this is huge this must be oh I'd say good forty fifty feet across in diameter alright let's take a look at something else well this is your typical Hut
steam house so know that we would call today a lot of things you would use it but what's interesting is how they clean themselves in the wintertime it'd be this size about six or seven in fee disposition okay
and obviously the steam from the water of the heat of the rocks would open up the pores and will let all the bad toxins out of their body then they'd use this plant which I can talk about it in their language but they wash it off and right away roll in the snow come out so that they close the pores of the skin and they'd be clean it's the only way they could clean themselves during the winter very interesting now the attempt risk is not sure on its anywh it they were mainly there to precariat let's say you'd find one of these it would tell you that okay the longest arm tell you the trail where the caribou are also another interesting thing whenever the lead caribou antler on that would tell the guy there just in case you need it they left some food right under here this here would be your well typical grave site of the yer on anyway I hope you enjoyed this little for you thought I could you know fill everything it was very interesting on now it's time to get warmed up
okay so ah the batting has been down for about 15-20 minutes now it still needs to cook for another 15-20 but we're going to take it off the fire the coals put on the coals over there and start the main the main diab meal I mean so it looks it's a little bit burnt up but it's going to be good you see here this Hut a little bit burnt but that's fine it's a little harder to control the fire like that in the winter time what's the other site look like can I flip this oh okay burn on that side a little bit to there let's put it on this side looks better so we're going to put on low flames I mean on very low low low for the last 15 minutes and we're going to start the night before someone asked me what kind of spices that I put are you going to see me put in this I figure it out I'll show you right away now this is from Pat from Quebec he sent me this with other spices and Pat thank you very very much I am loving this guy a lot because you can put it on just about anything sometimes I almost feel like putting on my toast in the morning but I'm not at that point yet it's old bay and it goes pretty much on anything it says for seafood poultry salads meat it's got a little kick to it it's just an awesome piece it's small compact it's 10 and you got different ways of you know pouring it big way bigger way and just like your normal pepper or salt and pepper so this is what's going in this meal right now so this is a much better angle
oh so we got onions cooking right now and after that we'll be throwing some well you know that type of phone to meet you see right there boom there you go let that cook for a little while and then we're going to add just the spices that I showed you so while we're waiting for this to cook again people will be asking so what's the knife I brought out today is the Maya ENSO Nordik this is the I don't think they make them anymore I mean they make the Nordik but not with this high scandi they do make it but it's got your normal scandi which starts much lower than that I love high scanties because you know it makes a great slice or with would at anything so but maybe I think there's a company in Finland or the ones that make this if you're interested they sell it as a kit now I need to remember that place name of that place and you can make it with this heist candy if you wish it's got almost a four inch blade on it it's a 1 and 3/16 on the spine or roughly 4 mils the handle is well okay I got some kind of a shadow there a handle is some kind of a burl of course I don't know if it's birch but anyway I love this knife it's lightweight perfect in winter time put it around your waist like I do what I'm still trying to remember that place where this anyway I'll figure it out and I'll put the link at the bottom of the screen where they they sell these kits so this is the Nordic andso Nordik also what I've done here
okay what's making that shadow see if I turn this around it okay this is a obviously it's new fire steel that I got from Reapers outdoor on YouTube and I decided I'm not good with paracord but I decided to make something so I can have a nice hand hold on it you know this just scrape it off and I decided to make this and of course it's not perfect as you can very well see it doesn't follow but I think this is called the snake whatever and I had a lanyard piece left decided to put it there with it so I can hook it on my belt loop or my belt and you leave this in your pocket so it's secure and you don't lose it let me change this angle a here maybe you'll see better okay so I know you guys will be asking where I got this so you know type up Reapers outdoor on YouTube and try and get a hold of him he makes great fire steels alright so this makes a nice little kit to have let's get back cooking now ok so the moon the onions and the meat is pretty much cooked now what you can do what we usually do at times my wife will put some a little bit of soy sauce to give it a nice color and you know make it a little salty but we forgot it so I'm going to add this lovely stuff show you what it looks like where is it look at that nice spice so let's not be afraid to put some oh man that smells good whoa this up a bit those juices some more not too much now oh come on you can put some right so we change angles a bit you can see and you mix it up cook it a little longer and we're going to add some well rice and go away what she is Vanek steak onions garlic that spice and rice but of course you have to can't forget see it's perfectly cooked where is it yeah so can't forget putting some butter on this frozen mmm so see this all right stop yakking I need to get this in my belly before it gets cold oh yeah
you know what I love about ladies in the bush they see things differently have different ideas now in the past my wife came up with all kinds of different ideas I you know we don't think the same men and women and I'm they're trying to put my butter frozen butter you know it's like minus 15 20 it has a hard time cuz it's sticking on my knife he says just put a chunk where it's warm at the bottom of your pan and it's going to stay melted and just you know dip it in now it works great be patient with me still I got one more thing to show you guys and a little update have a little coffee and it'll be done
alright one last thing I want to show you guys something I received not too long ago and most of you you know I've seen it but I still want to show it this is made by earth fire in the u.s. it's your type of little eye let's call it bushcraft jewelry you know or an EDC and what it has is a striker and a pharisee rod hold on I got to put this hat back on before oh ok a little close-up of it if you can you've got the little striker so there's earth fire okay and a little Pharisee rod just kind of cool what you do is you put your thumb the end and you see there's like a like a serrated edge well that's what that's towards you and you just strike it he's got a video you know how to use this and I don't want to use it because it was I want to keep it as is but you know it makes a nice little jewelry and thank you very much for sending this to me really appreciate it I'll put also his link to his website if ever you guys are interested in purchasing one alright so just in case you're a little curious then that's about two and a half hours of burning time yeah so now you know why it's important to put a you know it's still burning it's still gonna burn right down doesn't go out but the problem is it goes down lacks oxygen and it's not great but as long as it's good enough to cook your meal or make your coffee that's what counts so that was time for coffee alright coffee coffee coffee oh my darlin that's gonna feel good isn't it yeah can you loop that was full Cheers
well our winter this year started pretty rough we had a pretty well you know a lot of snow quite a few snow storms as you know some of you know already and then some crazy cold man woke up one morning it was -39 now the ice was starting to form inside of the patio door on the window there the bottom now when that happens it's really cold now - 39 Celsius hmm when you get up to that point it's about the same thing in Fahrenheit today it's about minus 20 minus 19 and we're out of the wind in the width and the woods so it's not so bad when you're well dressed you got a fire going got some hot drink and Saturday we're Thursday today Saturday they're announcing plus six and thirty millimeters of rain talk about a winter alright enough of my complaining mm-hmm little update the 16th of January I'll be leaving for Haiti for three weeks and when I come back anyway I'll talk to you about you know where I went why I went there
most of you know but still give an update when we come back so if you do send me some emails and questions or whatever you ask me you know just be patient I'll ask you guys when I come back so I'll finish by telling you even though it's winter time guys go out just go out there don't have to spend five six hours just go for an hour take some fresh air it's really good so thank you for staying with me through all that time and I hope this new year will be a good one I've got all kinds of plans I hope I'll be able to put them into practice and again your support your comments and likes my new subscribers welcome it's an honor for me to have you thank you there's nothing else I can say so you guys have a great day this is Mike from bushcraft partners bye you
you
