now with the winters we're having now just raining and getting cold freezes and then there's more snow and a thaws out there's always layers of ice so I don't use my snowshoe normally to break the ice cos you know you don't want to damage your snowshoe because you got to get out of here so I just first flushed everything in the stick I'll get as deep as I can I'm going to explain all that later on why I'm doing this now to make a fire during the winter right any type of fire and you want it to last I know you're spending the day there or I know overnight whatever you're going to need to prepare so that your fire burns well with no problems first thing you're going to need to do is absolutely dig as deep as you can to the ground you know even though there's a little bit of ice at the on the ground that doesn't matter but at least take all the snow concerning the size of fire now this is a long fire that I'm doing today because I'm spending the whole day I want to you know burn quite a long time a little tip if you're going to make a long fire make sure that you dig the length of your fire but you're going to make not just the middle and don't leave you know five six inches of digging and put your pieces of wood on top because you're going to end up with some problems believe me through my experience and you know a long time of doing these fires this is what's going to happen now when you start your fire even if it's a long fire your fire is going to start in the middle obviously then you add to it longer pieces longer pieces and eventually it will naturally spray it so if you leave this much snow under just this much naturally your fire is hotter in the middle all right so what's going to happen is that it's going to melt in the middle more than on the sides right and it always has that advantage of melting faster so what's going to happen especially for a long fire once your fire is burning nice and hot and your pieces start breaking both ends are going to be lifting up like this because it's not hot enough on both ends to melt like the middle so your logs are going to be like this all right and all your fire is going to come back in the middle and you're going to have really really hard time you know redoing this fire so it's nice and equal on both sides I hope you get what I mean because your fire is going to burn down from the middle of hottest and you're going to have some problems and even after if you want to add some logs to it all right we're going to add some logs my middle is deeper because I forgot to take all the snow equally I add the log and the log won't burn well because it's going to be hooked up on both sides of where it didn't melt and it's going to be too far from the main fire to burn anyway it's a whole bunch of problems that you want to put aside you want to make a long fire any type of fire make sure you dig as deep as you can and the size of your fire alright enough set on that now I got to get this going all right I have time to make much of a bird's nest but rich bark will do a little unstable birch bark hold on your hands what I'm going to do is go with the flint and steel I'm going to I still got some amma dude that I charred oh man you get warm when you're working with them it's cools I need to get this going so try this Amma do that's chard or charm do there's that snowstorm coming supposed to start this afternoon and go all through the day tomorrow so I try to get this going here okay that snows and have to stop
no patience
is a
- patience is not just waiting until something happens or doing something until something happens - patience is actually how you behave how you behave while you're doing something to happen what is your attitude and I often fail that this Emma do is just great you know in the natural resources to me this is number one it can be easily found around here anyway and as char cloth or any other like cattail and stuff this burns slower and hotter okay makeshift pull the snow kind of
kind of a bird's nest no rush
storm it's pretty cold too just taking my time there's no much use blowing and coal has to burn all the way through I could have put it the other way but I'm in no rush right now starting
Wow that doesn't happen often huh usually I start at these like nothing well I'm just not in a rush and I'm just the trick is the birch bark is wet from the trees and ice and stuff I'm just letting it burn down so when I do decide to blow it to a flame it'll be a lot easier than wasting my breath and time she's getting
all right soon folks be patient it's pretty much burnt see when you see a lot of smoke like this means there's a lot of humidity in the thing Burch slowly but surely that's a little tip we're using wet tinder as a tinder use it as a bird's nest you don't want to be too much of a rust rust rust rush looper want to give the time you're tender where the coal is to just dry up once you see all around is starting to really dry up and you start blowing a little bit more that's winter conditions anyway when it's snowing and wet in the summer you can start it up like nothing so anyway what you do first nourish your fire in the middle and then add longer branches slowly this will spread so one last thing why it's important to put a bottom for your fire obviously you don't want to go out from under you know because of the moisture the water and such but once you dig like this you're going to have a little if it's kind of winters we have you're going to have a little bit of ice you know about like this like I have but what's going to happen is because you have the bottom this is another use of the bottom the heat it produces under is going to melt the ice away while your fire is building coals on the top of your platform and it'll dry up slowly thus when it comes down evil you're going to have a long fire for a long line all right after that our is going pretty good ad longer people don't worry if it doesn't go on the sides right away eventually we'll so today we're going to be adding some coffee
Vanek stick up let that burn this way me change the angle the camera so you can see it better just like that and slowly eventually the fire will spread on both sides globe ice that's under still because the platform is protecting it will just become like water and seep away and at the end you should have a nice dry ground you know if you're spending a couple days or a whole day all right this is an area I like to calm you've seen this place in another video I love this rock because it you know creates a natural windbreaker and heat reflector alright let some stuff away and start finding some food certainly feels great having a fire that's great
get some ah my thick got some coffee slowly on the go then my stick for my panic that's ready let's give you guys a little close-up here where I start making the Bannock all right
so multi-purpose use this fire for everything it's drawing up my loves getting my coffee ready and they have a good enough fire I'll just well throw the banding pretty soon I won't wait for the cold but for my steak I'm going to have to wait for coals though but getting a lot of heat from this natural reflector keeping my buns off the cold got some fuel here I have to get a little bit more but all in all now it's just getting the Bannock ready and it's a waiting game and you're relaxing 1 2 all right so the Bannock is almost ready time to get that piece of steak plastic bag all right now cooking on the coals is not something that's very popular so I don't show it much but this time it's one of my preferred ways not only because it tastes good but also because this aside for a while but also because you don't need any pots and pans and butter and stuff the ringgit so one little tip when you are cooking meat on the coals try and get as much water as you can off of it there's always water if you don't the coals will stick to where there's water and burn your meat there alright so got some steak spices of course spice this up not too much or just a little bit more turn this guy around I'll explain to you a few things about cold so let the fire burn down get myself some nice cold for a week in the whip
alright let me get this camera a little closer so you see what I'm doing we have to repeat this alright so I set aside some nice coals there alright now what I'm going to do just play that right now that'll take about a minute mid and a half on both sides to cook you know maximum two minutes know if you remember that video about cooking on the rock wasn't too used to that so you know I screwed up real bad but I rather do this this way cuz you know I don't even need rocks just the coals and it's fine now you'd think that putting meat right on the coals like that will burn it all as black as this right now I'm not saying it won't burn certain places right it's part of the game but I have no problems with that I like it but it won't burn completely for a simple reason is that the coals that are under have no more oxygen flowing all right to make the coal hotter so it's like it's a controlled temperature the coal will just heat up enough and go down slowly so I'll just wait a minute or two turn that bad boy around disinfect this and the vatic is ready show you
or ready enough for me anyway you know I put it thin so it can be eaten easily that's the reason why I like doing the Banach this way as well don't need any pots to carry or anything and everything tastes just so great so give me a minute and I'll show you the results so just turn her around there's absolutely nothing that's stuck to it a little bit of Berk on the on you know around it but other than that it's going to be good now keep in mind this is a cheap piece of steak it won't be juice as juicy and tender probably is you know the good pieces but out here there's no problems there put my Bannock a little closer so it stays warm where is the vatic right there I suppose Oh keep eye on the steak now the water is flowing away I'm starting to have a mountain here all around trying to get some this is getting nice and dry and if I'd be staying here are all night you know I'll be reeking kindling it alright have a nice ground this is this is water just coming out from under all right that's I don't think it's even been in it longer for all right so only a little tiny excuse me well gosh this smells good only a little tiny piece right here that's it not even it's my fork dummy okay so there's the piece of steak
and because it's winter time I got to hurry up and eat this cuz it's going to get cold so let's give it a taste this a little bit over it's overdone but oh my gosh mmm
it's still nice and juicy I like it more rare than that don't see it in them you don't see in the camera but it's a little bit pink by Oleg and more this is delicious so you see no mess no pots and pans no butter just a few spices and cold hmm all right now I eat this up one more time like to eat I like to prepare stuff my best part is right now everything is done the fire is nice waiting for the rest of my coffee to warm up now I'm going to relax 1 2 3 been here three and a half hours maybe another hour that will be hit well while I'm at it like to take also this time for you no you guys are just awesome as I said before I got the best subscribers on YouTube we believe good friends and you know I appreciate all the support great support you're giving me my wife the comments are amazing again I repeat myself all the time like for newer subscribers I can't always you know reactor but I do my best but I enjoy reading them and a lot of fun so I want to thank you all for it all doing that to me that's right but right now those that know me this is my element right now this is what it's all about for me comfortable out here nice warm fire coffee and having you guys around and get any better than this I won't play it back together nine up left all right you guys what I think I'm talking too much hot good hot all right thank you again for watching I hope you enjoyed this video as much as I enjoyed making it and not just making it but being out here look at that Olympic flame alright enough you guys take care this is Michael in boostrap bar bye you
you
