oh hey folks but quite sure what's going to be in this video just trying to get some some fresh air see if that's gonna help my coal that's now become a bronchitis so don't expect too much work to be seen this is gonna I don't know play around with a knife and maybe make a fire have a little lunch still hope you're gonna join me [Music]
I see a nice place that looked like a nice place to you guys yeah that's to me been there before Oh quite a while back I'll be close to the to the water so I'll forgive me for the water sound but that's where I'm head
beautiful isn't it yeah
sound of the border is not always a great camera
it feels good here I know a lot of you have asked in the pass
why do I bring that you've seen this a lot in my videos I've taken a an old wool blanket a full-size one
I'm not sure if it was full size but anyway I cut it in half and resold the edge that was cut to make it easier for me to carry just for a ground a comfortable warm ground cheek
something quick where I'll hang my little pot
first I I'm wanting to share with you a pretty interesting knife this knife that you see here the custom makers name is Elka siku
he's from Finland now he's more known in Europe probably than in North America what you see there is one of his more popular knives or maybe we could call it as best seller it's called the bush Prowler now let's take a look at the sheet first sheath is very interesting it's it's very traditional we'll talk about other stuff about it there there's his mark here it's your typical traditional Scandinavian type style [Applause]
sheathe except for the snap obviously but there's a reason for this now I love this sheath okay don't get me wrong it's traditional it's cool the only thing is the snap it's a little bit of a pain to open easy to close but when it's on your belt you know if you want this to open you need to hold this tight so it opens easy because it tends to want to go this way so that's one little minor thing like this and something else is every time you take it out and into the sheath it feels like it's always touching the snaps and at the same time it stops you from wanting to put it properly in the sheath where it's supposed to go so a few times I cut the inside of the sheath now I understand why he made it that way normally your traditional sheath like this part here is very traditional and then it would come in a you know another round loop I would go in without any snap but the height of this blade is so high okay that he couldn't do that so if he would have made that traditional sheath obviously he would cut the sheath right open so he had to figure out a way and he left this this this part open and you know put a sheath put a snap in to secure it so I completely understand why he did it the inside comes with a traditional wooden insert you see where I cut the sheath a little bit there but it's a very cool sheet very secure very traditional I love it now let's take a look at this knife look at those beautiful scales it's arctic Birchwood very dense very hard got your nickel pins here so let's talk about the steel for a minute this is called silver steel now I've heard of silver steel a few years back this is the first knife I own that had that is made out of silver steel now what is silver steel well I had to research it because I was curious why it was called silver steel so I found a pretty legitimate story history that I think is true of course I'm not a good storyteller so I'm gonna rough it up for you just so you understand why it was called silver steel so a long time ago and way up in the northern part of Finland okay maybe that's a little bit overkill a long time ago somewhere in Finland probably I know they were having problems with their saws the old carbon steel rusts easily and they were having problems with the teeth always rusting up and of course that doesn't cut anymore
so what they did is that they I don't know if they just discovered it or they just put it in that I'm not sure the added what's called chromium now chromium if I'm not mistaken is what makes carbon steel stainless now not stain-free
but it's got less of a chance of staining or rusting okay so that's what stainless means and this chromium that's what it does okay so what they did is that they added a little bit in the carbon steel and I know once they've buffed it or sharpened the teeth one guy saw that it was so much more shinier than their normal carbon steel and he found to his eyes that look like silver so he called it silver steel so that's the story about why it's called silver steel and it's a I'm pretty sure it's the right one if not it's a good one anyway so that being said no there's no silver in this steel whatsoever but still I wanted to know what we could compare the silver steel to in more not modern but more known steels today so I contacted Mike Stewart from bark river knives which I have a hundred and fifty percent confidence of what he says I mean all his experience with playing with different steels in his life and still is so I asked mr. Stewart what could we compare silver steel to today so he said it's between 50 to 110 95 it doesn't have as much chromium as the 50 to 100 but it does have more chromium than your standard 1095 so there you go there's your definition of silver steel that's that it's a decent steel okay so now take a look at this blade shape a continuous belly nice drop point makes it a really nice slice or now as you can see the bevel starts very high okay probably more than 3/4 of it or about that's for a good reason because this is a workhorse look at this that's a quarter inch stick I'm pretty sure right so you guys doing any batani when it gets up to here it's gonna split your wood pretty easily but because it's so thick he started up this high and brought it down to a continuous it's just one bevel but a very very very slight convex now at first by looking at it I could not see it being convex but simply flat you know there's no secondary bevel on this at all as you can see but when you slowly feel it with your hands you can feel just at the end here very slight you know convicts you know what it is by now you should if you don't look it up but a very slight convex which is important to this knife because it's so thick you know you want it to be a workhorse that's his idea but at the same time you want it to perform well in cutting tasks slicing and all that stuff the blade is I can't remember but two or three maybe yeah between four and five inches four and a half inches maybe five I'm not sure I'm not quite five handle is four and a four and a half or four four and a half it's very comfortable its first time I see a shape like this usually you have a swell palma soil here then it comes back to normal but it it's it's comfortable right in the back here where you don't need another anyway you know what I mean so my two fingers here real well and then the two others just it's just a nice comfortable handle what can I say now I'm not a lanyard kind of a guy I mean I never or I should say I rarely put any lanyards especially on the knife this size because it's just in the way for me but this knife is so special that I decided to make or try and make something special now it's nothing out of this world all I did is use a piece of leather obviously this is maple wood burl and your artificial sinew or genetically modified sinew haha I decided to create you know created like like this just to make it more epic and traditional and I don't know again we just become kids when it comes to this and I like it so now one last thing I love this sheet and I'm always going to keep it because it's traditional to the night I had I had another sheath thing around that I received from a friend a spare sheet and I decided to play around with it and do this now was all this color and you know I sanded it added color and sent it again till you know until I was it takes a little while but until I was satisfied it's not a work of art but I thought that it would go with the traditional way of the night you know so put this in so that's what it would look like now with this sheath and I have to say that I do like it but I'm still going to carry or keep both of them I want to take a few pics just so you can see this one better
so it has no problems doing your simple notches I'm just playing around with it here getting the feel of this side well
for a quarter-inch thick blade certainly slices very well so it's a good thing that he started this high because normally I'm not a big fan of big thick blades but where is it very well thought of bringing it at a very small bevel from the top here because it's very user friendly let's go with the full flat here there's a knot right there ice why I'm struggling
yeah go with super well now can the blade of this shape create decent feather sticks well that's in
well it certainly can I got some thin and thick so yeah I'm gonna be liking this knife now I'm not gonna baton with it I mean we know where you can do I have no need of retarding today so and this going to continue playing around with it a bit because it's fun playing around with it where is that this way the bush Prowler now I don't need much wood today this one
make a fire it's it's apparently it's not freezing but it's well that's actually freezing at zero or minus one Celsius 30 Fahrenheit and I know there's big pieces
you know that could be good but I don't need much of a big fire and I only have my small hatchet so but one little tip when they are standing like that you can it's much easier you take the branches off first before you cut it down instead of cutting it down then it's you know especially a smaller trees like that just safer and less work well to me tomia I just reviewed this I long ago little hatchet by Ivan this thing is wonderful for its side [Applause]
I'll find a few ward we all sit of course if you want better result make sure you got something solid under here so it doesn't bounce but I have nothing there's a rock there but I'm not taking any chances and I'm not going fast I've just taken my time and you should take the time I see a lot of videos when it comes to axes are saws I'm not talking bad about people okay concerning safety when you see them Chuck as fast as we can or saw as fast as we can this is you know just to show that their acts or saw performance very well but I mean no need to do that you don't need to go fast or extremely fast to show off and your axe or saw goes better it's logic the faster you go with any tool the faster will get the job done but it's not a safe and these things don't forgive so today I was kind of lazy we're gonna have a cheap meal but kimchi noodles
spicy
including the spices of make me swill enough you have junk atomizer
I just know that I'm not that hungry Riesling spicy noodles will do the trick I feel like after screens atop my swimming pool of okay so this is boiled just enough left for coffee now I don't know if you've eaten these spicy kimchi but they are very spicy and this is probably not the best for my health right now but I don't put it all that's it
one third of it sink it five ten minutes this should be done very
it's time
you know I'm not much of a noodle eater I don't remember the brand spicy curry find them that's all I eat when I do eat me some of you are probably thinking hey this would make a great campsite you're right
the only problem that close to the river and during the spring this whole areas flooded screener
its water that brought this here so far over my head pretty straight only certain time while I have a son just ate a little bit before I head up have a little bit of shut-eye
20 minutes
very comfortably beside the fire and Sun does come out right in my face Oh anyway
remember to enjoy the wilderness to head out whenever you okay you guys take care my face
