morning guys I'm Dave Canterbury with self-reliance Outfitters in the Pathfinder school what I thought I'd do today is step outside the norm again just a little bit and do a comparison of three different types of pockets those that are on the market today one of them I've had for about 25 years one of them I just bought in the recent weeks and I want to show them to you and compare them and let's do a little bit of time comparison on boiling and see how they run okay so let's talk about these three what I would call pocket stoves the first one is an MSR rocket stove and I've had this stuff for over 20 years I know that for a fact how long over 20 years I'm not sure 20 to 25 possibly something like that very simple mechanism screws on the top of your tank on-off switch makes it really really simple blade with a lighter fare on whatever rubber gasket on the bottom I don't think you can buy this exact model this rocket stove anymore and when I bought this when it was right out $40 the second stove I have here is a Snow Peak stove very similar style of design it has a rubber gasket on it that you screw on to your pig tank you fold out the legs to hold your pot and it has an on/off valve on it as well this one is pretty close to $40 now again this was $40 20 year over 20 years ago this is about $40 today the MSR has been changed and approved I guess with different types of these rocket stoves but the current model is probably pretty close to that same money maybe just a little bit less now the next stove I want to talk to you about is a recent acquisition this is a coleman peak one stove and it again screws right onto the top of your tank the flanges for your pot just ride around in a circle just like that

and collapse up it's not much bigger than the other two as far as how much room it takes up but it is a little bit heavier mechanism not a whole lot but if you're counting ounces it's a little heavier the difference is half the price this thing was $20 at Walmart like 1999 and I recently saw them on Amazon for less than 15 bucks so there's a big difference there now I used this one in Texas and it worked out really really well for me I actually bought it in Texas because I needed it quick and dirty stove on top of my 533 comb and I generally carry because I need to want to loan one of my instructors if they want to heat up some coffee because the weather was really really bad keeping a fire going all the time was pretty much out of the question at this class so we used these to heat up coffee and things like that I was really impressed at the stove and that's the reason I want to compare it against these other more expensive stoves so what we're gonna do is we're gonna get a just a regular Pathfinder cup out because a 26 ounce cup we're gonna basically fill it up it's got a measurement markers on the inside of it we're going to fill it with let me get some glasses on and see what I can see in this dirty pot okay we're going to fill it to the old man eyes here we're going to fill it to the first line so we use that first line which is probably 12 ounces of water for all three tests and we'll time each one of these stoves on full blast and see how they compare

stay with me okay guys we got 15 ounces of water in this cup I went out and seen in the light I could see what the measurement was on there it's the 15 ounce line I've got my granddaughter's iPhone here I'm going to use to do this timing with we're gonna use the same fuel tank on all three of these and we will start the timer once I set oops what thing why's your write-up still we use that thing in ages so I'll set the cup on and hit the timer and we'll see how long it takes it to boil that 15 ounce of water getting close got bubbles coming up on the side now we're not there yet it's trying

I'll call that good six minutes and four seconds okay as a control measure here I went ahead and let the cup cool down for five minutes to make sure that I had a cold cup I started with and I'm filling it up for the same water jug which has been sitting outside underneath the overhang here so the water is cold so everything should be even-steven starting up guitar stuff started up here just these wide-open

so a cup on here starter time all right here we go yo

five minutes a few seconds so now I've let everything cool down again and I have been very diligent to make sure that I have the full 15 ounces of water in this cup for this last experiment with the Coleman because I got a lot of confidence in this stove I think it's going to perform very well compared to the other two but we're about to find out I will tell you just from standing here doing this that this is definitely the quieter of the three stones it's not near as loud as the other two were when burning does that mean it's not as hot I don't know yet we'll see

there you go statistics don't lie is that so

so the peak one took almost a minute and a half longer then there's no peak but even at six minutes for a little over six minutes for a boil on this peak stove you're talking about half the price you're talking about a lot less noise and you're talking about half the price so do I think that there is a place for this stove in my backpack I chair the 533 to be honest with you if I'm going to carry a camp stove because I like its multi-fuel capability and it's just easy to start up it's really fast and I've never been a really big fan of propane of butane type fuels because of temperature the colder it is the more of a pain they are to get to work right and today it's in the 30s here so we're doing all of this stuff outside in 30-degree temperatures which extends foil times probably as well so understanding that can make a little bit of difference but again you still have a large variance between the three stoves even with all elements being equal for the three stoves but again this peak one stove is less than 20 bucks I think there is a link if I remember right in my Amazon store right now to get this off Amazon for less than $15 to tell you the truth so it's really up to you it is a little bit more weight and it does take a little bit more time but what's one minute when you're waiting for a cup of coffee in the morning or water to be disinfected one minutes not that big of a difference to be honest with you the price difference is large and the weight differential is really not that big the offsets not that much it doesn't wait double one of these does weighs in any way shape or form but it doesn't weigh more guys I appreciate you entertaining me today or letting me entertain myself with just a little experimentation I had a lot more confidence in this stove probably than I should have

I thought it was going to burn just as well no doubt as these let's do stoves and it was a little bit slower but again you know what's one minute when you're talking about boiling water I appreciate your views I appreciate your support I thank you for anything you do for school for family for business all of our sponsors and structures affiliates and Friends knocked another video as soon as I can guys thanks
