morning guys Dave Canterbury the Pathfinder school out here by the campfire making a decoction of dandelion root for our herbal series on Pathfinder TV and while I'm waiting on everything to cool down I thought I'd shoot another quick video I've had a lot of guys ask me lately about my haversack kit and I guess I've really never went over my haversack kit but I carry a fairly standard set of gear in my hammer sack all the time some things change in and out depending on what I'm doing in the woods but as a general note things don't change very much so I'm going to go over what I have in this kit with you guys today

because it generally covers the things that I think I'm going to need if I get stuck out here overnight or something like that so I thought we'd talk about that I stay with me I'll get the camera moved in here close okay so in the summer time I'm out on a track of scout looking for wild edibles scout in an area where I've got to do something with one of the classes that's coming out or whatever the case may be just walking through the woods I've generally got this kit so let's talk about not only the kit of the haversack but basically what's on my body period I always carry some type of device that I can use to wipe sweat off my brow to also to catch wet and take advantage of evaporative cooling things like that and I carry a net type device for that because it's very conducive to other survival needs I don't use a smog I use a net we've talked about that in some of my other videos I always wear a fairly wide brim hat that keeps the Sun off of me it's also good for fanning fires and things like that if I need to but it gives me a microclimate of shade and then I have my belt pouch and my knife that's on me all the time in my Harbor sack and this is the oilskin haversack that we sell on the pathfinder website and this one's at least I'm going to say three to four years old I've never retreated this thing people have asked me about reproving before I've never reproved this haversack and you know it's got no holes in it whatsoever

it's pretty slick-looking from the sweat and things like that on it but it's never been repaired and it's never failed me so what we're going to do is we're going to start from the top and work our way down on this outer sack the first thing here I have a roll of cordage on one side of the haversack I have my fire kit in the center of the haversack basically three ways to start fire magnifying-glass ferrocerium rod and then a bit lighter a couple pieces of fat wood charred lamp-wick things like that just my normal fire kit that I carry every day I have a Swedish officers canteen with cup made out of aluminum here this the flatness of this works out really well as just a small carry bottle to give me something not only that I can boil water disinfect watering if I absolutely had to but it also gives me something to carry water in so that I can carry a little bit of water my haversack if I'm on a Scouter a trek and not have to worry about that without having to carry a big water bottle of some kind because it's fairly small it's probably only 14 ounces I have my normal chart tin inside my bag as well just a piece of cotton cloth could be used for bandages could be used for hygiene personal hygiene it could be used for lots of things to include shark I also carry a spare blade in my haversack and this is a Jeff white trade knife in a 18th century belt sheath I carry that on the side of my haversack just so I have a spare backup blade and then in the bottom of this haversack I have an oil cloth tinsmiths watch coats rolled up and you can see it rolls up to about the size and weight of a 32 ounce water bottle that's full of water and generally I keep three or four pieces of fatwood rolled up inside that and a little bit of cordage for wrapping it around my body if I need to I've done videos on this oil skin watch coat before you go back and look at those videos you'll see it it's basically a full oil skin raincoat that's oversized to go over larger garments even in the winter time and it can also be used as an emergency shelter if needs to be and I'll do a video on that here shortly so you guys can see what that looks like that gives me pretty much the five Cs and then some with me all the time because I have my cutting tools and I have a spare cutting tool I have my combustion device in that I have my fire kit I have a container that's made out of metal that I can put in the fire if I have to I have cordage and I have a cover element in my watch coat so all the things that I would absolutely need if I just got stuck somewhere overnight I have and I also have a couple of extra items on top of that in that I have the cotton material the cotton cloth and things of that nature that I can use for first-aid that generally is what I keep my outer sack if I'm going to carry a compass I carry it in the breast pocket of my shirt and I generally have some kind of a folding knife in my pocket as well as a spare ferrocerium rod in my belt pouch my belt pouch has a full fire kit within it as well in case I lose my haversack I always have the cutting tool and the fire kit on my body so unless somebody steals my belt in my pants I'm going to have that fire kit in that knife okay guys well that was just a quick look at what I carry on my haversack basically and on my person when I go out into the woods whether it's just for enjoyment of a little walk or scout or whether it is to go out and do something specific in with an environment those are the things that I carry with me if I'm not carrying my full backpack so that I have the emergency gear I need if I get stuck overnight somewhere or even too I can get along no problem with just the kit that's in that haversack the five seat of survivability is really all that you need if you need more than that then you probably need more dirt time I'm Dave Canterbury with Pathfinder school I really appreciate you joining this video today I thank you for anything you do for our school for our family for our business for all my instructor sponsors affiliates and Friends I'll be back to another video so I can thanks guys you
