morning guys I'm Dave Canterbury with the Pathfinder school what you see in front of you are the three knives that I made this weekend as example knives during our knife foraging class out here at the Pathfinder school we made one knife from a kit that was made by all modern means when I say modern means I mean a large grizzly slack belt grinder jigged up to put your grind in and everything else then we heat treated and gas boards tempered it in an oven sharpened it went and buffed it with you know electric buffers and wheels and things like that these two knives on the bottom were all made by more primitive process and that they were forged hand-ground or ground by hand and then they were sharpened on stones things like that and both of them one is made from a raspa was made from a file and they both have just para cord wrapped handles for the time being this one is punched with holes that could be scaled this one is not punished any holes yet at all so what I was thinking about today after everyone left the class is what else can I teach what else can we do in this class or what else can I share with people that we could possibly do quick and dirty to make knives and I was sitting in by my computer I saw my jeff white throwing knife in there that has a leather scales on the outside I thought you know a knife like this that was just a down and dirty knife and make no bones about this thing is razor sharp but a knife like this that you could put a couple rivets through or three rivets through and then put leather scales on it would be a very simple thing that you could do in your backyard and your garage at home with simple tools and you could have a nice heavy-duty camp knife on the cheap alright so we've got our poor man's camp knife here that was wrapped in paracord now it's not which is how I cut my finger but that's beside the point I said it took better precautions and it did one mistake leads to an injury so let that be a lesson to everyone now we're going to we traced basically the handle of this knife on a piece of heavy leather and then we took a punch and we just marked on the leather where we need to punch holes with a leather punch and now we're just going to take another knife and a board here and I'm going to cut inside the line that I drew just like this on the scale and that is some really really thick leather you might need to make a couple passes with your knife depending on sharp you are here now we'll just come back in here we'll trim this up just like that that's going to give us one side or one scale okay so now we have one side of the scale for our handle now want to make sure which side we've got now we need the other side so we're just going to lay it on here just like this I'm going to trace around it with our marker

just like this monkeybone going to end here will come in here and pump it with a part so we know where our holes are going to be like that then I taught our way we can lay the other one down on top of it just to make sure they line up pretty well and then the same way that everything looks pretty good and then we got to cut that one out okay now we're just going to take these things and leg the scales on here and we're going to use a form a trivet here so what we're using is a 16 penny now so we're going to drive a nail through there and nail through here and a nail through here then we're going to bring our other scale over the top of that line up our holes just like this and bring it straight down over the nails and down flat on the knife itself just like this get everything lined up at this point we're just going to crush this down and get this glued up so right now we're going to do is clamp this up I'm just going to go in between these nails here put a clamp on here just like that and like that this is about a 30 minute epoxy here it's not going to take very long for this to set up to where we can do the next step but we're going to let it dry for a little while and come back alright so the next step is to cut these off and we can use a hacksaw for that

it's probably longer than we need it to be honest with it good

okay now at this point we just take an old junky ball-peen hammer get this thing on a flat metal surface just start painting it over just like this until we get it nice and tight now I'm just going to come in here the lock is thing and advise you get a good sharp knife come in here and angle everything off so it's even I come down through here and get this evened up good sharp knife will get a lot of this stuff done for you real quick now I'm thinking about doing here on this end exactly sure cutting it as well kind of like this to expose a little bit of that rasp at the end right getting somewhere now get some oil on this dude should be in pretty good shape all right get some oil rubbed into all this area with leathers raw now we can come back in here and we can grind these pins down a little bit on this backside if we want to grind these down to the shade but really they're not affected me at all they're on the inside on this side they're not effective either or not sharp or anything they're not affecting me at all so right now i think i'm just going to leave them as this gives it that handmade look anyway so i think right now i'm just going to leave it as is and there is our hand forged camp knife with leather scales riveted in with 16 penny nails on washers guys I'm Dave Canterbury pal fighter school I appreciate a joint matter today for this quick video on how to put a set of other scales on a hand boards camp knife and again we just use 16 penny nails and washers for our rivets I got this idea again from jeff white from one of his throwing knives had leather scales on with rivets it's a very easy way to put scales on something to increase the width or mass of your handle on the cheap if you can't afford to or you don't have the materials to make nice wooden scales I appreciate your views I appreciate your support I appreciate everything you do for our school our family of our business I'll be back through the video as soon as I can on the tail end of this video I'll actually put some photographs from basic night building 101 that was held up a finer school this weekend thanks guys you
