afternoon folks I'm Dave Canterbury with self-reliance Outfitters in the Pathfinder school what I wanted to do today was I wanted to show you a quick tip or trick that you can use to orientate a map to the terrain if you don't have a compass normally you would lay your compass in the corner of the map and you would use that to orient your map to the terrain setting a declination in your compass so that the map matches your compass and then you would look at the terrain in front of you and it would match what's on your map I'm going to show you a way to do that without a compass if all you have is a map you can use this same method to find north south east and west very very quickly as long as you understand approximately what time of day it is if you're a little bit off then it's going to be a little bit off but if you have a watch you can get it very very accurate this way and I'm going to show you right now will verify the method with the compass here in a minute so what I've done is I've taken my map and this is the top of my map and we know that the top of the map always is a northern direction this map or grid north this is the area of the map that I'm operating with right now are using and what I've done is I've taken out drawing a circle on the map with my bottling cup set Cup and then I have subsequently divided that in half then into 45 and then split that down into 15 degree increments to get my 24-hour clock on the face of this map and now I can use this to orientate this map by use of a shadow stick and I'm going to show you that as soon as the Sun comes out in just a minute okay you can see the shadow moving across the map here and according to my watch it's about 3 o'clock in the afternoon so now we need to rotate this map until the shadow crosses the three o'clock line here and a 3 o'clock line here obviously we know that if the shadows to our back somewhere in this direction of South so it's easy enough to figure that out so we line this up so that the north of space and forward we line up this line on the shadow and then we can for verification purposes we can pull out a compass and lay it down here on a grid line and you can see that with the three and the three lined up there across the shadow we're almost on the money also remembering that there's seven degrees of declination here so while we're just a little bit off here I would expect that because there are seven degrees of declination okay guys so that was just a quick tip or trick video on how to orient your map to the terrain if you don't have a compass so that they match I appreciate your views I appreciate your support I thank you for everything you do for our school for a family for business but all of our sponsors instructors affiliates and friends and I'll be back with another video as soon as I can thanks guys
