morning folks I'm Dave Canterbury with supperless Outfitters in the Pathfinder school and this morning I'd like to talk to you about a common bracket fungus called turkey tail you can see it's growing all over this downed log and the good thing about the turkey tail mushroom is it has no poison look-alikes and I've never been a big fan of mushrooms when it comes to a survival food because other than nutrient and mineral value you're not going to gain much in a survival scenario from something that's really only about 90% water and it has a few minerals and nutrients in it but for the long term this particular mushroom commonly known again as the turkey tail also called dramatise versicolor is the latin name of that mushroom is an immune system building fungus very good for building t-cells or keeping t-cells active in your system which are your immune system battling type cells and it's been used in cancer research it's been used in HIV research as an immune system builder but on a day to day situation keeping your immune system healthy especially if you're living off the land or living in the wilderness is very important because maintaining your health is just as important as battling some malady that you may already have so you can use this on a daily basis as an immune system builder and if you look at the fungus itself I'll tear one off of this tree here it's got the fan shape with the multiple colors in it which is probably why it's called a turkey tail it has other names in other cultures in oriental medicine this is called the cloud mushroom because it kind of looks like a cloud in the sky but again it has no poison look-alikes which makes it very easily identifiable it grows lots of times on dead trees in mass I mean this thing's probably got a hundred of these on this one single branch and you can take this and you can dry it and it will last for years it doesn't lose its potency over the short term so you can store it for a long the recommended dosage is something like this is 2 to 3 grams 3 times per day and you can dry it up and grind it you could just mix it with your food or you could powder it and mix it with some type of drink if you wanted to or put it in a powdered capsule so I wanted to bring you this video today on our medicinal series on the turkey tail fungus again which is a bracket fungus completely native to the Eastern woodlands it's all over the place in Eastern woodlands and very very easy to find and again with no poison look-alikes
