okay guys I wanted to introduce you to my hungry goat Tanner here you see he's more interested in eating anything else he's a little bit camera shy but uh I wanted to do a little video today on pack goats and why I think the pack goat is such a viable option for the woodsman and what I truly believe you know is that goats are a viable option for a lot of reasons number one they are obviously they're an MRE you know their meal they eat in emergency you can eat to go is he a pet yeah he kind is but you know you got to do what you got to do right and he understands that just ask him right Tanner he's got nothing to say anyway don't look at me like that anyway so you can see he's very alert he's looking around he's wondering what's there just like any other hurting type animal but the fact is you know he leaves a very cloven hoof print so he leaves very little trace it doesn't look much different than anything else in the woods

his scat doesn't look much different than a deer scat they can go three days without water you don't have to feed them they eat what's around them so you don't to pack any food or water in for them that makes them a very good option and they can carry 25% of their body weight so I don't want talking about this morning as how I pack this goat up what he carries the different options of how I do carry things with the goat so stay with me I'll be right back okay guys so what I want to go over with you this morning is you know different options for packing this goat now this goat will pull a sled and that's a big advantage because in snowy weather like we have in Ohio in the wintertime

I can't load all of these things that actually go into these packs on the goats back I can load them into that sled and you can just pull the sled then if we kill some big-game animal or something like that that we need to carry I can unload the sled put everything in his saddlebag packs that he

as right here with a saddle born again and then you can pull the sled as well so that gives me a big advantage because I don't have them loaded up to his capacity now and that's important to understand you don't want to load your animal up to his capacity because you want him to travel light so that he can do other things for you if needs be you know you can pull firewood and shelter material in that sled as well if you need to travel some distance to get to it

containers of water that sleds a container he could pull that whole sled full of water of course he's going to slosh a lot of it out but the fact of the matter is he could do it if he needed to

so you utilize that sled for what it is and the multi purpose of it in the winter time and then you also have the option of the pack now what he's got here are all what I would consider extra items above and beyond what I would carry for my emergency pack out so if I get separated from the goat or something happens I still have the gear that I need to survive and we'll talk about that in a minute I have a small scouting pack my 12-gauge and I have you know my shooting bag just laying on top of wool blanket here that basically I've just got to land there for you guys for visual it's not the wool Blanc is not something that I carry with me the one up here is and the one back here is the goat carries that we'll talk about that in a second so in these saddle bags or on that sled and I'll put pictures of both packed and him carrying them on this video as well what I have here is I have a large bag of spare clothing right here the same bag that I carry my Duluth pack but now the goat carries it in one side of the saddlebag and it's got a spare pair of wool pants a spare pair of wool long underwear a spare pair of socks a spare hat and a spare pair of gloves okay so all the things that I need in case I get wet or damp in the cold or in that bag and he carries that there's also a spare tarp here above and beyond the one that I carry that's an 8 by 8 tarp this is a still night ARP but it gives you extra shelter options that you can carry with you there's two wool blankets here one military one percent wool and one Civil War replica type wool blanket that's a hundred percent wool so he carries both of those he also carries extra food items with him he carries a folding skillet he carries about a pound of salt cured pork and almost a quart freezer bag of

wheat flour self-rising wheat flour so there's a lot of food options right there that he carries with him as well an extra water container with cup a cam packs the 19-inch Wetterling cam packs my mitts with the wool liners and my anorak in case the foul weather plus he's got this saddle blanket that we can put on the ground for ground cover as well so he carries a well-rounded group of items with him the only thing that he doesn't have in here are things like fire okay I carry that on my body all the time I don't put it on the goat the goat is for spare things more luxury items things that I could use for a longer term situation or if maybe I got into a jam and my clothes were wet and I don't want to just dry them over the fire and be half naked in front of fire I can put spare clothes on so those are the things that the goat carries for me and again you don't have to carry anything for the goat because he eats what's around him and he can go three days without water so he can drink the water you're drinking or not drinking all for a couple days that's not going to hurt him any because they get a lot of their liquid or a lot of their water from the grasses the plants and the things that they eat as well as you know I've seen him eating snow already so they get their water that way as well so above and beyond what the goat would carry then I would just carry the gear that would last me if I were in an overnight or two days situation if needs be because I got separated from the goat and that would be my 12-gauge shotgun which we've seen a lot of videos already my shooting bag which we went over another journal of the yurt and my scouting pack which you guys have seen but we haven't talked about the contents in the contents of the scout pack and I'm going to say I know somebody's going to ask me what this weighs this Scout Pack probably weighs out eight or ten pounds maybe if it weighs that much I'd say maybe 10 pounds probably weighs about a gallon of milk which is 8 point something pounds so somewhere along that neighborhood what's in here are very few items really there's a spare knife in here I always have a secondary cutting tool with an ethnic style knife in a leather sheath from blind horse knives I have a bag in here that has foodstuffs in it this one happens to have almost the same thing that the goats carrying as far as what the food items are just not as many of them there is a small freezer bag of wheat flour mix in here self-rising there's a small ziplock bag in here of hot chocolate and there also some salt cure bacon and those things all go in this small ditty bag made by Ryan eaves for me and all of that fits neatly into this pouch and that's my foodstuffs I have my headlamp which we talked about this bag in another video that's got my headlamp and spare batteries in it I have a bundle of greasewood and I can't any beeswax candle tell me with fire I'll roll a bank line a small bling canteen star bottle with the titanium Cup and a shelter roll

that's basically my Duluth tarp that you've seen in other videos with six stakes and the Rope lines inside of it okay and all of that fits into this pack now this pack also I have a small rag at the bottom of this package is cotton material that I can use for anything from bandages to you know all the things that we talked about the 10 C's of survivability you can do with the bandana there is a small pocket on the inside of this pack right here that has a few items in it and what it has in it is my fire kit it has a blanket pin that's also doubles as a striker it has a pair of these tongs in it that we talked about the other day for eating utensils a piece of Flint a small roll of heavy backline my toggle stick that I used to take my containers off the fire on set a bank line and two sharpening tools that we've gone over before as well and then a small container from nuuma these are made by new myth which is going gear calm and basically what I keep inside this is several repair needles and some light duty bank line for doing repair and all of that stuff just fits in this pocket or this pouch for real neatly and fits inside so I can afford to carry this gear as extra stuff with me because it's not hurting anything so really I pretty much have most of the tendencies a survivability in here now the one thing that you haven't seen I'm as far as it tends to go it's actually in my pouch here with my headlamp is I keep a small button compass in here that's made by Tru Nord and it's just a small brass compass for general direction okay that's all I really need I'm not trying to follow a map or follow a bearing I'm wandering around pretty much in known territory all I wants general directions so I carry that button compass with me just to make sure and then I've got to watch compass as well so I've got two compasses there to compare and say okay if I'm confused I don't think this one's right I can look at the second and say yeah they match there must be right so those are the things that go inside this pack and like I said you know it packs up pretty good and there's probably I'm guessing right out like I said the weight of about a gallon of milk in here so it's not too bad it's not really a whole lot of stuff to carry pretty convenient it covers me for emergency situations I have all of the 10 C's of survivability with me in one way shape or form and it all fits nicely into this pack

and I actually have quite a bit of room to spare in this pack to be honest with you I could put more stuff in here than what's in here but I don't choose to do that I like to keep it nice and flat when I'm done packing it between that much shooting bag in my 12-gauge you know I've got everything that I need in emergency situation and everything is to go carries for me is just extra bonus I don't have to use necessarily except my Packers and I've got a few extras for comfort in inclement weather as well you
