afternoon folks I'm Dave Canterbury with self-reliance outfitters in the Pathfinder school what I wanted to do today was this video is kind of a two-fold video hey I want to talk a little bit more about this hennessy hammock and the reason I wanted to talk more about it is because now I've used it in a real-world condition I've taken this thing down to Florida and spent four days in the Florida Keys on an island off the coast of the keys about two miles out into the Gulf there and whether a pretty good storm in this hennessy hammock and I'm very happy with the hammock itself it does a great job it's comfortable sleeping sets up easy wonderful hammock the biggest problem that I had and that other people had that we're out there with different types of hammocks as well as the size of the tarp you really especially when you get into a high wind situation where you're exposed and you've got rain and storms things like that coming in you got to have a big tarp and so one of the things that I started doing as soon as I got back from the keys well I started looking for a big tarp that was going to be lightweight I'm a big fan of oilcloth oilcloth is the bomb-proof stuff oilcloth and canvas or what I want long term but even in a short term four or five day camp you're going to need some extra protection sometimes depending on the environment you're in maybe even in cold weather or you know there's going to be a storm coming in even in eastern woodlands doesn't have to be on the coast it could be anywhere and you want that bigger tarp that you can put over your stuff so I started looking for in large heavy-duty sill nylon tarp that wouldn't weigh a ton for POC ability but it would still be strong enough to weather a good storm and I found this defender that we're selling on our website now we sell in a couple different sizes this was called the defender tarpon is 10 x 13 in a woodland camouflage you saw this in my last hammock video that I shot when I talk about simple suspension for your hammock but this thing has like 20 40 outs on it and it has Center tie outs as well as tiles on the side and it has grunt or nut grommets but sleeves or pockets in each corner where you can put poles if you want to so it has a very very good by functional aspect as far as how many different ways it can be said for a shelter and I've just got it set up as a hangover here and it's been this way for about three weeks so I've let this thing sit out here since that last video never took it down let it whether the wind the storms the rain the sleet everything over the last couple three weeks we've had here in Ohio when we've ran the gamut to see how this thing was going to fare it's done a fantastic job there's no judgment to start whatsoever it's a nice thick heavy tarp the second reason I wanted to come out of the day and shoot this video was when I shot the last hammock video I had a guy basically just read me the riot act because he said that you cannot hang your hammock at a steeper angle or a more elevated angle than 30 degrees or it becomes dangerous as far as the stress you're putting on the fabric and the suspension system and things like that and I've been sleeping hammocks for years and never even paid attention I just throw them up get them to where they're comfortable and I lay down and go to sleep but I'm all about learning so I did some research I looked at a couple different websites about hammocks and look at the hammock forum and read some research online about degrees of angle and things like that for hanging a hammock and lo and behold taught the old dog a new trick he's correct the optimum angle is 30 degrees or more for your hammock to hang so the minimum you really want is the 30 degree hang on your hammock this direction you get up higher than that you're putting a lot of extra tension and stress that the amex really not designed for on the hammock itself and some of the hammocks like the hennessy you probably couldn't get any stretched out more than that because they have a static ridge line now only allow you to pull that thing so far and that's it and then the bottom is going to hang where it's going to hang and so this one's hanging out about that 30 degree angle coming down even when it's tight the other thing I wanted to show you was I wanted to show you it's just another suspension tie out type system that I that I came across when I was doing this research for hang angle of your hammock and I'll be the first to admit I'm not an expert hammock ampere I sleep on the ground more times than not but I'm fond of hammocks hammocks gets you up off the ground in wet weather they're comfortable to sleep in especially the older you get and the more hurt you to sleep on the ground the more comfortable a hammock becomes so I'm starting to like hammocks a lot more use them a lot more and the research is not going to hurt me any so I want to show you this hang system because it's a pretty slick system but you do have to carry a little bit of hardware although the hardware can be lightweight stay with me I'll show it to you right now okay so we've got here is we've got the normal suspension strap system that I use with the two tubular webbing pieces that are 25 feet long and the reason I'm using this again is because the hennessy hammock straps don't fit around some of the larger trees i have here in eastern woodlands the new part of this is just two rings in a clip a repelling great clip this is a repelling grade carabiner I think it's a black diamond I'm not sure and these are Omega type belay rings okay and these belay rings go on just like this in a pair and what you're going to do is you're going to take your rope from your hammock and you're going to run it through both of the Rings just like this and then you're going to come back through the Rings a second time so now you have two wraps through that ring or both rings excuse me then you can cinch it up pretty good and you're going to bring this thing around to go through the Rings again but when you go through this time you're going to go in between the two rings and only go through the one instead of both when you do that it's going to create a lock so you pull this thing tight and then pull force back against it it won't move it's locked in place tense between these two rings with this rope constricting the Rings against the other one so it's very very quick to adjust because you can make it tiger very quickly you can loosen it up very quickly it's good and solid i laid in this thing for a good 20 min

a few minutes ago I haven't done an overnighter with this system yet but if it didn't fall in 20 minutes or get loose in 20 minutes that's probably not going to all right so to get this thing undone all you have to do is give yourself a little bit of slack in there and grab that tagline and pull it and I'll loosen the whole thing up very very easily then you can just feed it all back through or whatever you want to do you could pull the one out that you ran through it doesn't really matter it comes down really really easy goes up just as easy you can tighten it right back up again if you want to just dress everything down to the bottom and that thing just pulls tight as a drum I mean it's just tight ties a banjo string so this is a pretty good system it's not really expensive you've got to make the investment these two rings of two carabiners and you've got to carry that hardware but again you hardly notice the weight because if you buy the good stuff it doesn't weigh very much well folks I'm Dave Canterbury self-reliance off there's in the Pathfinder school I appreciate Julian for this quick little chat today more than anything else on just a couple things with the hammock the tarp the hammock itself the suspension system and then safe hang angles and things like that just a quick Sunday video for you that I wanted to shoot up there to get a couple things off my mind to get it done jumbled out of my head appreciate reviews I appreciate your support I thank you for everything you do for our school for our family for business for all of our sponsors instructors affiliates and ferns and i'll be back to another video as soon as I can thanks guys you'd like to get in his hand Nick when you you like to get in his hand excluding you you would with you you would I know you would I see it I see it in your eyes
