morning folks I'm Dave Canterbury with self-reliance outfitters in the pathfinder school what I thought we'd do today is just have a quick discussion about wool blankets we have a new wool blanket that's a hundred percent Australian wool that we brought into our website for sale at the hundred dollar price point so we tried to find something that was a hundred percent wool good quality wool at an affordable price for a queen-size blanket I would say a hundred dollars is a pretty good price for a queen-size wool blanket that's actually 100 percent wool now I've done lots of videos in the past on how to use the wool blanket but I thought I would combine some of that stuff today informational e into one video so that you could see this wool blanket up close and personal and see how I choose to use a wool blanket because I think that it's one of the most underrated and most important pieces of your kit especially in that third and fourth season stay with ok so first things first we've got this queen-size wool blanket and again this is 96 by 96 and we want to use this to sleep on now first of all our sleep within the first thing you want to remember is that we want some type of ground sheet underneath this blanket and I have not put that on the ground here for this demonstration but some type of tarp or some type of egg um blanket or even a tick mattress of some kind to get you up off the ground to help battle conduction from the cold ground and then we want to take advantage of this wool blanket by layering this wool blanket on our body and so what you're going to do is gonna lay this blanket kind of on a diagonal and you're gonna lay in it on the diagonal and you're gonna pull up this first corner closest to your feet here and you're gonna pull one layer of that over your feet so now you have one layer of blanketing over your foot you have one layer under your body then you're going to take the blanket and you're gonna pull it over the top of you like this and that's going to give you a second layer over your feet and you're going to tuck that underneath your body to give you a second layer underneath you as well and the last layer will then be pulled up over your feet so now you have three layers of wool of your feet you'll pull this up over your upper body and tuck it under your core so you now have three layers of wool under your core then you can pick up this corner just like this and pull it up over your head pick up all this excess blanketing that you've got here at the bottom lay down on that and pull all of this over the top of you so you're basically cocooned inside this blanket with three layers of wool under you two layers of three layers of wool on top of you excuse me two layers of wool on top of you and three over your feet and the weave of this blanket makes it very conducive to layering it releases you don't want a blanket that's woven too tight if the weave is too tight on the blanket it's not going to release moisture and it's going to make you sweat really bad you want to be able to trap dead air space between the layers which is how it insulates you but you also want to be able to breathe and so this blanket is a very good blanket for that and it is a nice woodland color it's like an off tan color it matches the foliage really well it folds up fairly small if I had to guess and I haven't waited I apologize for that but if I had to guess I'd say it's probably right at the four pound ish range maybe when it's folded up it may be a little bit lighter than that if you check our website I'm sure those stats are on our website so that gives you one way of sleeping with this now the other thing you could do is you could just fold this blanket in half and you could use blanket pins all the way around it or some type of a pin system even if it was sharp sticks to pin it down but then you're only gonna have the one layer under you and the one layer over you but in that early third season that might be enough what you don't want is just to flap this thing over the top of you to where you're going to in the middle of the night kick your feet out of it hang your arms out of it and all those types of things you want to make it more like a sleeping bag and close it up if you're going to use it in that and if you were sleeping inside of a shelter where you couldn't wrap it all over the place like we did out here on the ground and you're sleeping in some type of raised bed shelter you may need to go to that configuration and there's nothing wrong with that but understanding that you've got a shelter with a fire in front of you things like that is going to help with that this setup right here of wrapping up a swaddling in this blanket is more for a scenario where you are sleeping just underneath the tarp maybe you've got some type of a browse bed underneath you but you're not really using a fire anything I got to keep warm you're just cocooned up in this blanket for the night all right now if I'm gonna wear this blanket as outerwear I would lay it on the ground and fold one third of it over and that one third is going to be the outside because it's going to become a flap on the backside so that I automatically have two layers of protection over my back now if that is not enough you can always fold it just a little bit more than that but what you don't want is you don't want that thing to be to the point that when you put it on and still dragging the ground so you want enough of a fold in there that when you put that thing on and lift it up over your head like this it's not dragging the ground behind you because you're going to want to come in here and tie this thing built this thing off eventually but the first thing you need to do is give yourself plenty of hood over your face come in and trap a double layer of that blanket and then pull that hood back off your face choke down just a little bit from there get yourself a good double fold of that thing and then get your blanket pin take your blanket pen and shove it through there double it over and rotate it around that's going to give you a secure situation there so there's not coming off now I can manipulate the rest of this okay so once you've got that now you want to put a belt around this thing and if everything's pretty well evened up here you should be able to just come to the back throw this thing around you doubled over like this pull it through the loop bring this in behind and this it in front get your arm out of there so you can operate come in there and pull just a slippery high fishing that thing to hold it just like this and that's going to give you your belt make sure that you've got it up off the ground but you've got plenty in front of you to wrap into like this if you want to you've got enough room to be able to take it off your shoulders if you want to as well and you've got plenty of room here to pull that hood up over your head and not jerk this blanket pin up into your throat okay there's lots of different ways now that you can use this blanket as a garment for walking through the woods or sitting around camp to keep you warm well guys that was just a real quick introduction to this new 100% Australian wool blanket that we're selling on our website it was also just a quick refresher on wrapping up in a wool blanket and using that wool blanket for an outerwear type garment and what's important to understand about any piece of gear really is how versatile is that gear and how well can I adapt it to different scenarios and does that justify carrying that single piece of gear and when you're talking about a wool blanket it's a fairly heavy piece of gear it's very heavy if you're into the ultralight thing if you are just a normal bed

packing guy you're out doing a hunting camp or whatever and you're adding that to a packet you're trying to keep at 35 pounds or below it's still a fairly significant amount of weight being somewhere between four and six pounds for the average queen-size will blanket but the versatility of that piece of kit both as sleeping arrangements as well as outerwear type situations makes it very very versatile and I've made videos in the past on how to do everything including making a hammock out of a wool blanket in an extreme emergency if you had to do it but using it for outerwear something that you can wear around the campfire in the mornings and evenings to keep you warm and then something that you can use as a system for sleeping in and layering up to keep warm in the winter time as well makes it very very worthwhile piece of gear I appreciate you joining me for this video I thank you for thing you do for our school or family for business all of our sponsors instructors affiliates and Friends I'll be back with another video as soon as I can thanks guys
