morning guys Dave Canterbury pathfinder school i put a video up last night on starting fire in wet conditions in frontier style frontier fashion in other words I use flint and steel technology and a lamp wick with a tinder bundle now the surefire part of that comes in with some type of accelerant and I used fat wood that I'd collect it for that with that set I've taken that video down I'm going to shoot another video today people questioned whether the fact it was wet out here or not for some reasons all you have to do is look at a weather report and you understand that it's been raining for several days in state of Ohio the other question I have was why the video was edited well I try not to put a bunch of stuff that's not needed in a video so I speed through things that aren't necessary I have 500 videos on YouTube and probably 40 of them involve fire so I didn't think those necessary to show the whole process of making the fire but more to speak about the important points of this is what you can do with charred lamp-wick this is how you collect standing dead this is how you build your fire leg and things of that nature but because I had some questions about that I went ahead and shot in another video this morning it's not quite as wet out today as it was yesterday it did rain last night some but it's fairly dry out this morning although all the materials and the ground are still soaking wet but we'll get right to a guy so stay with me I apologize for having to shoot this video twice but I want to make sure that my viewers are satisfied all right well anybody who doesn't believe it's wet out here right now and look at this cedar and it's in a good protected area and it's still soaking wet that thing is soaked through and through we'll see if we get some tinder off this bad boy anyway though [Music]

just be more than happy to show you how soaking wet everything is out here got some phat wood here I've got some kindling that I collected got some smaller branches here I'm going to break up again I've got my fire kit but I would call my frontier fire kit and that being said you know from the historical reading that I've done probably better than 80% of the fires that were started or started using the flintlock mechanism of a musket or a rifle in this case we're going to use go ahead knees flint and steel I've got my bird nest here of cedar bark that we collected earlier I'm going to spread that out a little bit of my backpack while I work on the rest of this just to get it a little bit drier it's damp

I'm sure it'll still work and I'm going to process some fat wood down momentarily here into smaller components with my knife and then we're going to get started

okay guys here we go first thing we need is our again our flint and steel we got our piece of charred lamp-wick in there as well flint and steel kit I keep my piece of charred lamp-wick in just a zip lock type envelope here and you can see it's charred on the end and that should allow it to catch a spark very easily now again the ground is wet right here no big deal I'm going to go ahead and just put this pile of sticks in front I'll put it off to the side a little bit here so you guys can see what I got going on then I'm going to take my bundle of tinder and that's what I'm going to use to build my teepee with and I will spread this out once I get a bird nest on fire over the top of it I'm also going to use some of these small shavings of pine as I can right now I want to process this tinder bundle a little bit or this bird nest I've got some stuff that was in my pack it's fairly dry but I also have all that cedar bark that I collected this morning that is fairly wet so it's going to take a combination of all of that probably to accomplish a fire in damp conditions like I said it is not raining now but everything out here is soaking wet I'm going to leave that in my pan right now to keep it off the ground you

well I hope that's enough of a fire that nobody's going to tell me that it wouldn't have sustained yourself or it wouldn't have worked in wet conditions pretty wet out here I don't mind doing things twice it doesn't bother me a bit but uh generally speaking I'm pretty good starting fire I try not to draw videos out for you guys I try to get the important points in and leave the other stuff out but we went ahead and shot the whole thing right here I probably will not put back in the collecting of the standing dead and things like that we talked about it I hope you guys understand that flint and steel piece of charred lamp-wick would have been a good way to start a frontier type fire in wet conditions as long as you have some type of combustible tinder collect yourself some standing dead get it ready weed tops and things like that that are standing in fields are always a good bet because they're going to be up in the breeze are going to dry faster and they're going to be hollow and pithy so they'll catch fire quickly I thank you for watching this video I thank you for support I thank you for everything you do for me and for my family I appreciate all the time that you take to watch my videos and the comments as well because they only make me better and better at what I do but with that said I'm Dave Canterbury pat iron school I'll be back the other video as soon as I can [Music]
