hey Rufus are you been bad boy you

morning folks I'm Dave Canterbury with self-reliance outfitters in the pathfinder school what I thought we'd do today is we're going to make a real quick

traditional camp meal called cornmeal mush and cornmeal mush is something you would prepare in a cold-weather environment the night before I prepared this at home and it's a very simple mixture you just take yourself a pan or skillet and you heat it up on medium heat and you add the ingredients for cornmeal into that pan and then you stir it around and let it get warm so instead of cooking the cornbread through you're just heating the cornbread batter up and what I use is just like a Bisquick cornbread mix just add water pour that cup and a half of water in the skillet with my mix mix it up until it's bubbling up a little bit getting warm and then you pour it into some type of mold and that could be a pan like this or it could be some type of a loaf pan of some kind then you refrigerate it outside you don't have to worry about that in weather like this it's going to get refrigerated overnight and that makes it hard and then you slice it into slices and fry it in either grease or oil and I've got some olive oil in here right now that I had my hive or sack and we're going to fry this cornmeal mush and it would be served traditionally with some type of syrup or honey and honey being such a great medicinal it's also a fantastic carry for your hive or soccer for your backpack when you're camping because it adds that sweet flavour to breakfast foods and it's so highly medicinal that it makes it a great carry so we're just going to let this burn down to a bed of cold right now that we can fry over and then we're going to get this cornmeal mush out I'll show you what it looks like we're going to fry some up for breakfast now for something like this we're just trying to cook up a quick breakfast we don't need to add a bunch of fuel to the fire we'll just feed it from the outside in so you take these stubs that are on the outside feed them into the middle and that will build up your coal bed or frying over so don't get too excited out in a bunch of fuel to this fire because you don't need it okay once we've got this thing down to pretty much coals and not much flame just get our skillet right on top of the whole deal here get that thing heated up we don't want to burn this oil or burn the fat we got to be careful of that we're just trying to get it nice and warm because we want to fry in here okay once you start to see it moving around in there a little bit you know it's getting hot I can start to see it shimmering a little bit and bubbling over here that's more than hot enough now I'm going to pull it off and go get my mush

now this cornmeal mush I've just got it wrapped in a piece of cloth here and it's going to look pretty much like raw cornbread you can see I've got sliced in about 1 inch slices here just set it in there just like a slice of bacon just like that get it on the fire and start frying

if you don't have to be sparing with your grease you can use quite a bit of grease in here and almost drop fry these dudes but if you're being sparing with your grease you don't have a whole lot of lard you don't have a lot of bacon grease you've only got the bacon that you're cooking in there's producing your grease or whatever the case may be you can do it like this just as easy just kind of keep them floating around in there you can see out a wheel starting to bubble up real good now just don't let it get too hot yeah we're getting somewhere fast keep that stuff moving around and won't stick to the bottom of your pan even if you're running with low grease pick one side for three or four minutes or tell us golden-brown just kind of look at it every once a while flip it look at the underside once you get the underside golden brown flip it over fry the other side

you see I'm not using a spatula or anything right now I just got what I got which is a spoon spooning a fork it's plenty enough to cook with for sure and it's going to absorb that oil so you're going to run out of oil sooner or later for my money the best thing on cornmeal mush is honey I'm betting Rufus is gonna agree we're gonna get right out of the pan here you're gonna worry about no dishes Rufus I'm gonna cut you off a piece that Rufus got hit over there yeah Harley what's more huh golly go don't get no better than that dog son yeah Holly hmm eyes just done perfect there's nothing better make cornmeal mush on a winter morning with honey on it they give you energy for an all-day hunt I guarantee it man what they made a Dean better have been a couple pieces of side meat in there bacon grease huh all right here we go piglet last piece for dad let's do some snow in here just think clean it out clean that out of the fire I know some guys are going to ask about this on the video so before I close things out here and get things all cleaned up this Fork I did a video on this I saw this in the movie revenant and I reproduced that fork and it's a flint striker and a fork meat fork eating fork whatever the case may be it's about the size of my spoon but matches pretty well this is the production model of that fork that's been cut out on a water jet and then we've bent it around it heat treated it and all that stuff we put a couple holes in it case you want to tie to a stick but it's a nice little piece of kit it's going to sell fairly inexpensively probably for around 15 bucks if I had to guess we're going to produce about thirty of these for the website for next week but I know somebody's going to ask me about it so I thought I'd answer that question on this video before I pack it in well folks I'm Dave Canterbury with self-reliance out there in the Pathfinder school and this has just been a quick short video on cornmeal bus again

you can make this stuff the night before it can't before you go to bed especially in a cold weather scenario like this let the weather do the work for you to load that stuff up so you can fry it in the morning or you can do it before you leave for a camping trip for the weekend you could do it on a Friday night or Thursday night where the case may be and put it in your refrigerator overnight and it will do the same thing but it's a quick simple way to make a warm good meal sticks to your ribs lots of energy and it tastes phenomenal I appreciate your views I appreciate your support I thank you for everything you do for our school for our family and for business for all of our sponsors instructors affiliates and Friends I'll be back to another video soon as I can thanks guys
