back in the woods [Music]

okay guys I thought what we do today is we take a look at a couple tools real fast that we carry on our website as you guys know I'm a big fan of George Washington sees or Nesmith he carried a couple different tools with him as his mainstay

he carried a folding knife with him all the time but he also carried two main tools he carried a knife and he carried a double bed axe and they were both of his design and that he created and he found them to be very useful for him in the woods

the Nemec style knife I'm sure most people are familiar with that style of knife this is the one that we sell on our website it's called the muck and it is by blind horse knives it comes with a pretty nice leather scabbard sheath fold-over kind of like the old bucks came with and it has a thing on the side of the four ferrocene rod as well pretty nice heavy leather belt sheet it's a nice blade I've used it a little bit I haven't used it quite as extensively as some of my others yet it's hard for me to test a lot of different knives all the time because I've got ones that I prefer to carry obviously but this one has a four-inch blade on it okay which is a little bit less than I would prefer for a standard blade but then again you know if I've got that double bit axe not that big a deal

this was what Nesmith preferred and then the handle is about five inches long so you've got a nine inch long knife there it's got a nice heavy-duty handle on it the nice hole through the back side for a lanyard you've got that nice curved blade of an epic style knife and has a saber grind which is very much like just a sharp Scandinavian type grind but it has just a little bit of a bevel again at the bottom of it making it more of a scan davecs type grind but I think what they call this on blind horse's website is a saber grind if I remember correctly so it's a nice knife and we do sell that on our website like I said what I really wanted to show you guys today I showed you that because I wanted to go over to nest mix tools with you real quick and what he preferred to carry but this new double bit axe is what I really to show you that's handmade in the USA by two hawks out of Missouri Devon price same guy that makes the Pathfinder tomahawk it's made out of 5160 spring steel it's a very very heavy duty belt acts and Nemec designed this axe himself and he sawed you know he traveled extensively to get this axe made and I believe the original was made by Bausch and Lomb I'm sure we're all familiar with them as a company that makes lenses but I'm sure at one time they had machining as well and that's why they made this axe for him but is a double bit design and it is about four and a half inches across the top of the head and then the cutting surface is about two and a half inches okay it's a pretty good sized head two and a half inches of cutting surface on both sides four inches across now one of the things that nesic asked for when he designed this double-headed axe and the reason he preferred to double head axe was because he had two different grinds on each side of the head one grind was shallow and one grind was steep so that one grind could be used for fine carving skinning tasks and the other grind could be used for knocking out burrows and stumps cutting out SAP wood from pine stumps things like that and as far as breaking bone like sternums and pelvis bones when you're processing animals and that was the reason that he did that so he'd have one side it was always good and sharp for delicate tasks the one side that he could you know beat on a little bit more for splitting and chopping and things of that nature so we're going to go look at this axe for a minute we're going to cut it B spine up with it real quick just to show you how durable it really is and how tough it is I'd say I don't know what the exact weight of this head is I'd say it's probably about a pound and a half would be my guess it might be two pounds but I'd say it's more like a pound and a half okay the very very nice high polished blade got the Pathfinder logo on one side two Hawks name on the other side it's got a nice wide handle on it here at the back that comes out so you can get a good grip on it it's got a little bit of widening at the back end so they if you do slip a little bit you slip into that wider portion very comfortable in the hand very very nice nice and axe okay guys it's that same piece of pine that we were picking on with a knife the other day you can see that's a pretty thick piece of pine and it's not going to give up the ghost very easy because it's got a lot of grain in it but I think we can probably bust this thing down a couple whacks with the sax and we'll find out okay let's take a piece of tulip poplar here and do a little bit of fine carving with it find a good spot on here it gets you see I can get some pretty fine shavings off of that with that axe easy enough

pretty nice

well I appreciate you guys joining me here today at the Pathfinder school for this short product review on this Ness m'q acts at the Pathfinder school by two Hawks Nest m'q is one of my personal you know mentors if that's what you want to call it one of the people that I look up to very highly he was very early and before his time as far as passing on the tribal knowledge to others he wrote countless articles journals papers books and things like that to pass on his knowledge to other folks that wanted to read it and learn and I think that's very important so being able to design tools that he preferred during his tramping as he would call it is a great honor for myself and for the Pathfinder school I appreciate joining me for this video I appreciate your support I thank you for what you do for my school for me for myself for my family and I'll be back another video soon as I can guys thanks you
