okay if you get to a point where you can't find something to make an ember with with a magnifying glass you haven't been able to make char yet you have been able to find any fungus or any like that that will readily accept magnification or solar energy to make an ember what you can do is I'd really keep a rolled-up hunk of poplar bark in my bag and you want to get just a small bunch of that and get it processed down pretty fine and once you've done that what you're going to do is take it and put it in your hand and roll it into a really really tight ball what that's going to do is restrict the oxygen flow to the material and it will create a live ember for you so you basically make a small cocoon like an insect would have and then take your magnification lens get it heated up let it burn in really good don't get in a hurry with this part let it burn deep into that ball protect things from the wind if you take the magnifying glass off of it and it's still smoking or continues to smoke then you've got an ember then you can take your time get your stuff together

get your magnifying glass protected check to make sure you're still burning grab whatever you found for bird nest material which may not be the optimum stuff in this case it's just some barky material and I'm gonna try to work with here

that I grabbed on the fly really fast take your time with it especially if you've got less than optimal material and then let the fire burn into the bundle
