well gosh Dave Canterbury the Pathfinder school out here at the forage again today and today we are going to take a round file like a rat tail file that's been broken off and we're going to attempt to make a knife that also doubles as a Flint striker so stay with me I'll show you how I'm going to do that it'll be the first time I've ever made anything like this so first attempt we'll see what happens I'm going to film it I screw it up you guys are going to see it stay with me [Music]

now that we've got our basic spring pop put a curl in the end down here just heat it up turn it over with a pair of pliers now we're going to kind of fancy this thing up a little bit you get up just a little bit more get the rest of that turn in there okay guys now we've got our initial blade profile and our handle the way we want it I've been a hardness handle so that I can use it for a flint striker this is made from a five then I'm going to reheat the blade let it cool down and we'll go on to the next step you know material removal and tempering the blade so stay with me guys okay guys so we have our basic profile now a little bit of a drop point off to round this off a little bit material reduction if quench decide once when it was super hot that should allow this to throw sparks not sure how that's going to effect once I heat treat the blade for right now what I'm gonna do with this I'm going to heat the blade up as hot as I can get it and I'm gonna let it air cool so that I can use a material reduction to get the profile I want or the grind that I want on that blade so that's where we're at so far fits pretty good in the hand should be a pretty good skin a knife when I'm done okay so our blades heated up to the point where it's non-magnetic now I'm just going to let it air cool so that I can accomplish the material reduction to get the profile and grind that I want finalized so I'm just gonna lay it right here on the anvil let conduction suck some of the heat out of it and let it air cool for a while you
