afternoon guys Dave Canterbury the Pathfinder school when to bring you another trapping video today I want to show you pretty simple trap I call it the wishbone trap it's based in part on some ideas I got from a buddy of mine Martin Herrera who it did a video on trapping

making a trap with no sticks whatsoever he was having a few problems with it here and there using Bank line and it spawned a couple ideas in my head so I thought I'd come out and playing around I came up with a trap that's really really looks to be effective especially for a small game and like birds and things like that ground squirrel chipmunk type stuff but I wanted to show you this traps I think you'll impress you

also stay with me I'm going to show you how to make it very simple we'll be right back okay so the first thing I want to talk about real quick is the engine and all I've done is I've taken a bungee cord here wrapped it around the tree and brought it down that's what I'm going to use for my engine it's on a small sapling here and you can see what I've done with this is I have taken just a loop in that line and wrapped it around the eye or the hook on this bungee cord and that's going to be my spring engine for this trap so I wanted you understand that right off the bat before we get into too much here the components of this trap are real simple what I've got is I've got a dead stake in the ground right here and it has one piece of Bank line tied to it that has a loop tied in it okay and you can see that loop is tied into the ground right there against that dead stake and that could be any stick doesn't have to be necessarily cut with anything that broke off and pound it in the ground with a rock I have a triggering stick right here which again is just a stick that I broke off on both ends it hasn't even been cut with a knife okay and then I have my wishbone and my wishbone is just a small stick very much exactly what it says like a wishbone it's just a why a broken-off stick now I have sharpened this end that I would be using to place my bait on okay and I would put my bait on this part right here if it was something I had to stick through the body of a small animal you know a piece of a protein bar or whatever the case may be if I were going to glue bait to this with resin from a tree like seeds or nuts or something like that then I could do that as well and it wouldn't be necessary to sharpen this so let me show you how this trap works how this trigger system works again I like simple triggers so we're going to have a simple simple trigger system here and I think you'll be amazed at how effective this trap could possibly be - stay with me okay guys so again to go over our components real quick we have our bungee right here which we've tied a string to we have a loop tied into that string just tied in the middle of it and then we have our snare loop at the bottom okay so just tight an overhand knot to create a loop here a little ways down from our spring device and then our snare loop is tied in the bottom of that the only thing we need for this trap now is we have a stake in the ground here we've pounded down in with the rock just like this we've tied another piece of bank line to that with just a simple loop in it all right now it's just a tensioner loop now the premise of this trap is that the trigger is this piece of stick right here okay and what we're going to do is we're going to bring this bungee cord down with a loop in it and we're going to actually put that loop that's in our stake line right here we're just going to pick that up with the stick just like this so we're pulling up on it then we're going to take the other loop we're going to put it on the back side of this triggering stick now what that creates is once we scoot those together that creates a trigger that releases when it drops down like you just saw okay let me grab this back over here real quick so again you're going to put the stick through your steak loop like this and then the other loop goes right over the top of it like that you can scoot that back a little bit the farther you scoot it back the easier it's going to be for it to set off so you're going to have a hair trigger okay just like that now you take your loop and make sure that it's pulled up and out of your way for a minute then you would take your stick that you're going to bait and you would bait this stick if you had to right here this will be a baited trout and it's really simple in the fact that you just take it and you stick the wishbone right inside that loop there drop the other end down on top of your wishbone just like that and it's a little bit of a steadying job to get it where you want it that's why you've got that wishbone so you get more points of contact so you're not trying to have to balance everything as much but it is a very very slippery trap okay then you take your loop your snare loop and you would put your snare loop in front of the trap on the ground just like this depending on the size of the animal that you're trying to trap you can stake that out and again your bait is right here okay on the trap so what I want to do now is I want to give you an up-close look at this thing and this angle so what we've done is we staked a loop into the ground here alright we have our cross stick that's holding the upper loop in the lower loop in one spot and that toggles this way okay in a clockwise manner to release the snare that's on the ground alright so what would happen with this trap is again your bait would be in the why fork right here you would funnel the animal in your trap by blocking the backsides of this trap off I've got a stump here now you'd add a couple other things here so that he's going to come into the trap from the front side where you've got your snare loop all right so now when he comes into the trap he's standing here inside your loop and he's trying to get your bait and as soon as he does that he gets trapped okay so let me set that off for you again in slow motion with a stick and show you how that works okay now I've went ahead in piles and debris up around here to kind of make that animal come around to the side of the trap understanding that our bait is right here on the stick okay and now when that animal comes in to feed on the bait he's going to stand inside the loop remember and feed on this bait all right let's shorten us stick up a bit so it's more the size of an animal okay so the animal comes in here he walks in he stands in your loop to feed on this bait and when he does that

it sets the trap off and as you can see we've caught our stick now our bungee cord just pulled off the tree there but I did have it tight on there secure I just wrapped it around looped it over so you would want to tie that down obviously if this were trying to trap an animal but you can see it ripped that stick straight up out of my hand a very very effective trap you

okay guys Dave camera at the path power school

join me for another video on the wishbone trigger system like I said I like to try to keep things as simple as possible you can make that trap without using your knife for anything other than cutting your cordage which saves on your blade conserves your resources and that's what's important in a survival situation or even a self-reliant situation for shorter long term you want to conserve on your resources and use them as effectively as possible I appreciate you joining me for this video I appreciate your views I appreciate your support I'll be back real soon thank you very much
