are you doing this is mitchell to native survival school today we're going to make a bow drill kit with a pocketknife stay tuned
what I'm looking for is a dead standing pine
this is a huge pine grove along this pond
this tons of dead pine here you can see leaners right here as well you can see how the bach is missing on this tree clear indication that trees dead it's another one its top is missing hello and beside it no needles losing its bark three-quarters of the way up these smaller diameter pines can work out well because they're almost the finished size all you have to do is just shape them up and you're done there's almost no material to be removed but it's also been snowing and raining for many days now snowing today raining the last three days so because of that the outside of the material is going to have to be taken off because it's what you can see it so I need to find a piece thicker than this because of the inclement weather that we've been getting so much promising it's a bit thicker it's obviously wet that's no stuff to it grab my buckle a blender pine grows in groupings branches are knots it's one here and here and so on the good sections use for bow drill all right in the middle so I'm use my saw to cut on each side says my two pieces to work with I have a nice ring to them it's a good sign there may be a boat rock it here so how's a curve in it I'm gonna take the straighter side as my spindle behind this tree right now just give me protection on the driving snow keeps me out of the wind keeps us know from hitting me as well quick little Shelton pussy I'm going to do is just reduce some of its size and square it up this piece I just noticed has a really large cry going all the way to the very center it's going to completely change how i can use this piece see that crack as you can see goes all the way to the center it's not good well maybe I can skirt it and lean towards the other side to be a very challenging kit
so I just took out the crack the whole half and have the crack he's gone a lot of insect damage I need to carve past as well see it on the edge I'm gonna have to try to make my spindle somewhere in this region getting smaller and smaller
just evening things up that's what I'm looking at right now cylinder let's all squared away still a lot of insect damage but there isn't on this side so I'll make this my working end on my heart so now I'm going to cut down each corner evenly so creates two bridges will be an octagon I don't like to carve circles because then my string can slip I like to have a lot of corners so I'm gonna make an optical and so I've eight corners going all the way around my spindle
I just caught the point so do it for the point I'm going to take some of these shoulders off now the working end see that i created a shoulder all the way around
now I'm going to take off top because of the insect damage pushing me towards the middle away from the SAT would close the hardwood and because of the crack running along the side I had to basically go towards the middle from right in the middle of Highwood which is the worst place to be of course Mendel because it's the hardest part of the would be harder to get an effort with this we'll see what we can do now the last thing I want to do just make sure that it's circle so my spindles done else work on the hearth board so this is where the crack was brought it down to there I'm going to try to put my spindle right here
this kid feels soaked No
very concerning
carve off the but what
bark
try to remove some of that moisture from it
there's my depression okay so I found the spot that doesn't have any snow on it so I'm pretty close to the road so you probably get some cross going by in the background it's got my waterproof clothes on now inside my haversack and the valuables pouch up front Keith tinder the little things big piece of birch bark in there I'm gonna use that to catch my under putting some pine needles my bearing block okay see if we can get it to burn in myself situated
I have to change the angle my back wall they can actually going to do that
angle this can be improved a little bit just taken down the back wall moving around too much I gotta fix that my spells going to be fine we work on the hospital a little bit the bottom
isn't perfectly flat I'll help its it not walk around on me all these little details are what add up in the end bubo joke it working or not have to be a problem solver says the changes I've made made this nice and flat made this little deeper I also flattened out the bottom a bit it was a little rounded a little better now I'm gonna scar my notch very close
it's a little black squad on top for the amber was forming the smoking of its own accord for a few seconds after just didn't just wasn't able to hold on okay let's try again sometimes a number needs more air this time I'll give it a bit more when I'm done
yeah extremely close my spindle was gettin kind of rough at the end knocking and knocking at the sides so I'm going to just pop it a little smooth
rope is still a bit loose but i think i can get you settled it ok
Wow the Ember won't coagulate hmm get this little wider some more air can go on
still smoking
Wow stop smoking look at this that's crazy it doesn't help it's got snowed on but should have kept going what are you doing number huh what's going on over here get an idea I'm gonna do something I never do I never blow on a number I'm gonna blow on it while it's still in the socket me said I can heat it up one more time press in a little i'm gonna blow on it while it's still in the socket now obviously breath has moisture in it so i usually don't do this we'll get a shot bull domain of snow storm not easy stuff sometimes see an odd number on that alas it one out hmm the bad luck today with number is going on okay try on what time want to make a new socket it is what it is making you saw kit right here try again I'll go right back with you there's my new socket I'm gonna burn in okay burnt in probably not to get back to you really having to earn this ember okay see what happens and then Mike it breaks I almost feeling really good too nice and smooth
so we'll go on the other side now gots no landing all over the place off on my pile not good all right let's see what this one does for me I'm gonna bulk up this side a little bit this grounds real spongy and it's really causing this to rock a lot it has this whole time
everything just so all right let's see what happens running him okay burnt in to Train couple miles away so third times John this stuff has been snowed on let's start fresh
All Right see what happens got into some of that insect damage on my spindle
burned in nice and easy but it was really fighting me there cleaning up marriage is a little bit I think I've got one more left in me I'm just Oh
just burnt out kind of gets done not here a long time and get this under ok mr. amber please be good to me make everybody happy
yes my goodness I earned that one got a little uh tinder bundle might have a sack they're not a big deal there it is beautiful
my goodness
well I on that one bow drill kit carved during a snowstorm well the pocketknife really pays to practice your skills in adverse conditions this was not an easy task today driving wind driving snow made a kit right now just a raw green kit just using a pocketknife a full tang knife would have allowed me stronger cuts but you can get it done with a pocketknife
well I really tested my skills but bow drill kit during a snowstorm with a pocketknife this one Mitch with the near survival school sure to check out our website at NIDA survival calm and as always enjoy the outdoors
