Bushcraft Dinner - Lobster Surprise

Description

Bushcraft cooking in the chilly november woods of New England; my Meme's recipe for a surprise lobster dinner that dates back to the early 1950's.

Story goes when neighborhood kids would ask what she was cooking before asking if they could eat over she'd reply "Oh we're having lobster surprise," and lobster being rare and only for rich people they'd say they wanted to eat over. Of course there was a surprise... hahaha ; )

Love imagining those old times, things have so changed.

hi there this is Mitch with an ADA survival school today we're gonna make one of my favorite meals lobster surprise stay tuned

so the surprise is that there's no lobster it's a custom an old tradition in my family to make soup out of leftovers whatever we can find one day to make soup dig around I have some bacon a couple extra pieces left over I'll go in our soup couple potatoes and onion and a couple little baby carrots that I found in the fridge all these ingredients are leftovers a couple extra potatoes left on the bag handful of carrots left we had two onions left I grabbed one and a third of a package of bacon inside my native survival food pouch I have various spices salt pepper garlic powder onion powder and the like I also have bullion cubes today I'll be using one of those that will be all the spice I will need putting my potatoes small allows them to cook faster take less time to get soft [Applause]

that's a loophole and everybody's favorite bacon [Applause]

let's see I'll cut it like this bacon on cutting up small as well in camp I use a dirty rag I have one ragged stirry all the time but clean up make sure things are sanitary I always cut raw meat things like that on the bottom of my bowl I took contaminate the inside

I'll add my bullion cube starting my fire today with some birch bark scraping with my native survival knife I'm gonna strike this with when you smile fella run [Applause]

never it's been raining pull the bark off of what you plan on burning pulls the moisture in stays wet long after the outside of the bark is dry have a long stick you can just put the end in the fire as it burns pinecones are a good source of fuel as well

smell brilliant it seems a very opportune time coffee [Applause]

feels good to be organized in the forest things fold it up easily put where they belong

coming along nicely using the old pieces of firewood it's a great way to add more fuel to the fire it's already been burned so it has a tendency to burn well and add a lot of heat to your fire because it's practically instant embers let's have a look inside have a nice boil cooking beautifully nothing stuck to the bottom

smells heavenly let's switch to night vision and the interest of keeping quality high I have to use brown sugar in my coffee [Applause]

soup is boiling along nicely looking really good excellent go get some more a hot cup on a chilly day like today crisis

really hits a spot beautiful woodland out here very enjoyable

that's Twilight descends sounds change in the forest sounds of daylight dissolve The Silence of the night slowly replace [Music]

well that looks fantastic everything feels very soft in there now - it's probably been boiling cooking along here for Oh an hour anyways reduced very nicely still a soup though so lots of liquid it's also gonna take this off the fire now looks good look how fatty that stock is I'm the only one here pity I can't share it but I think I'll get along just fine thank you Father for all your gifts they are multitude thank you for have a lasting wife turn our way thank you for the teachings of you son Jesus Christ thank you for this bounty I'm about to eat thank you for my family the love I receive the love I can give thank you for a chance to be by your side forever more well that's one of the best things that I read no kidding it's savory hmm

but not overly so it's fatty bounced off by the brightness of carrots and the baseness of potatoes spiced absolutely perfectly everything cooked

nothing is hard outstanding absolutely outstanding give it a close-up have to make this at the next new survival rendezvous hmm guys gonna love this not to make it by the gallon he's my big cooking bucket hmm this is crazy it's crazy good well thank you so much for joining me today for this incredible meal of the forest so easily done so easy to cook a couple simple ingredients left over in the pantry one of the best things I've ever eaten mm-hmm joy the outdoors even if it's a night time enjoy it more so there's been Mitch put the neatest Bible school take care
