20 Minute Bushcraft Shelter (REAL TIME)
Description
I build a 20 minute Bushcraft Shelter with no tools. This is a new series I am doing called "Reality Challenge". Where I try to complete bushcraft skills or survival tasks and make the challenge as real as possible, no fake edit cuts. In this episode, I build a shelter bushcraft style using dead sticks. The shelter I go for is an a-frame shelter, using a fallen silver birch tree as the ridgepole. I set the timer and continue building the structure with the camera recording non-stop. Using no tools, I scavenge for natural materials to build this simple primitive shelter. I use dead leaves to insulate the shelter and protect it from rainfall. Overall the bushcraft camp turns out pretty good. Watch on to see if I fail or succeed!

Video Transcription
good morning welcome to ta outdoors in this episode it's gonna be a slightly different take what I'm going to do is try and build a shelter with no tools in 20 minutes and not do any editing cuts so no cutting of the videos all gonna be on one clip I'm not really seeing it done before I've built shelters with no tools on YouTube before but I've taken my time to do them which has allowed me to obviously make quite a good shelter from it this is gonna be an ugly looking shelter but hopefully it's gonna be practical and if it doesn't come out and if the shelter's not complete in 20 minutes I'm still gonna show it and I'm just it could be horrendous who knows so I'm in a woodland I'm in a deciduous woodland I'm not in the wilderness this is a local woodland near me okay we're all hooked up I've got the microphone for the GoPro hooked up here it's gonna be recording now yeah so all the audios here we're going to be constantly recording on this GoPro clip it is I'll show up the GoPro 20 to 3 in the afternoon I have 20 minutes so it's really have to stop let's start the timer now so I'm going to use this tree here as the shelter to make the a-frame especially when I've got no tools I need to be able to use a shelter use as much of them natural resources as possible there's a load of dead wood lying around here
let's grab Ivan put this here this is all it's not priests or non pre-cut there's just dead wood everywhere I'm just you can see it there's snapping I'm just trying to put it stuck it slightly forward like a D plan is to try and try and make an a-frame shelter but a nice simple one that's a bit wrong just so I can put loads of leaves on it I just need enough that's quite big I don't make it much bigger than that to be honest I kind of like a little kids one that you see in the woods day when you've got no tools you need to use what you got so this is going to be one long clip I appreciate that guys so bear with me please be patient we'll see what it comes out like I'm going to do one side first so I'm completely at least completely protected from the elements on one side if I try to do both then I don't think it's gonna work as well I'm hoping you can see with the GoPro have not adjusted it much there we go this is a frame is probably the simplest shelter that you can make bushcraft wise it's very easy it's one of the first many people learn oh that's a big branch I'll try and do a time check where I can but having no tools makes it a little bit a little bit more difficult let me know your thoughts on challenges guys maybe we should do like an overnight one build a shelter in a certain time and then have to overnight on it what your thoughts on that ok I need a few more sticks that's my coat by the way there's no tools in that but I'm just trying to wedges I'm gonna have to use leaves and the more sticks I can find in a way the less leaves I need to use but the leaves are going to be what's waterproofing the shelter at the end of the day so if I can get as many of these kind of sticks wedged in here it's possible I'm using all the natural law of the land I don't need to worry about my feet too much or nearly nearly five minutes down I think we're about three minutes into this I've never done this before and a time challenge I wanted to keep it as ruined as real as possible no edit cuts nothing like that just straight up what can you build in 20 minutes it's not gonna be pretty okay let's get in guys all right I reckon I might make a start the other side luckily I'm in a woodland where there's a lot of dead wood so it doesn't matter too much I want to keep the shelter small as possible but collecting the leaves I reckon that might take the longest look at this hazel just sitting there this reminds me of being a kid just building shelters like this it's not very straight I like I said it's not gonna look pretty at all ah brambles yeah let me know your thoughts on challenges I'm definitely thinking a shelter build challenge with an overnight camp aura or a cook shelter building cooking maybe an hour I'd know what do you think of that shelter bill cook build the shelter cook some food in an hour oh look at this have got a natural wedge here where I can use to snap this up like that same again through there but there that's a couple of pieces it's gonna need a lot of leaves I've made it fairly big come on Elise there's a big old silver birch this down
how are we times out five minutes down I think obviously the timer on your screen it's gonna be more accurate Oh as a beauty beauty that's a bit too small I guess I'm trying to imagine a 20-minute situation
well not survival as such but where the weather's coming in bad real bad maybe a storm and you need to get shelter bill with no tools here's another wedge in there let's use that half that piece oh that was rubbish that's too rotten there's not a piece most this is rotten so I can just tap it breaks but when you've got twenty minutes and no tools okay what you got your brain but now with me there's not much of it okay I reckon we might be ready just plug some of these gaps to start adding leaves you're gonna need a lot leaves Lord Elise oh dear there's the basics of the shelter no I'm gonna try and start adding leaves actually to be honest because that's what's gonna protect me from the the water elements if it rains they're gonna kick em kick the ones up to the shelter here closest first just kick them all in that gap is gonna be plugging oh we're running out of time running out of time do you know I don't think this is gonna happen very well I've got to build it up 20 minutes is not long enough I appreciate it's a bit dizzy for you guys watching this keep behind it's not gonna be knowing me I reckon there won't be enough leaves on the shelter coming up to ten minutes left down that one side chucking horizontal sticks on there as well because they'll just help pinch all the leaves in some literally grabbing anything and everything those horizontal sticks like this just placing them there just hold those leaves in it's not the professional we're doing it when you're limited on time okay back ends almost done whoa are we ten minutes left
dear Lord oh dear Lord honey was getting away a lot now imagine trying to do this whilst starving
okay building up I knew the leaves would be the time consume little bit cuz I don't have a tarp or anything to put min it's going with their hands here yeah and the other thing I'm having to go further and further away for them let's see some of these I want to leave something in the shelter for the bed got to build it from the bottom up well this is very the shelter's looking poor chances lacking car apologies for your view like I say you guys just rushing around just conscious a time very minor if I really wanted to be protected from these elements I'm gonna need like four times the amount of leaves but as a basic starter I'd quit look inside we're good I think maybe a couple of caps over there
see the other side we are like eight minutes left I think I'm blowing out see blind now the difficulty here is about brambles say haven't got a lot to work with rip my hands up something differently otherwise this same old shelter videos but I think it's cool to try something without cutting it roars can be not gonna lie it's slightly out of breath doesn't help me my hat really thick and making it hot we're three degrees today so we're not freezing but we are very cool cool enough to wear hat but now I'm bloody boiling oh now I've sworn have to put swear we're bleep in that oh look at that plastic I'm going to take that home hate people really plastic in the woods what is that problem you're taking them you're taking the effort to bring food and plastic into the woods it's even less effort taking out she's generally eaten it or drunk it I don't understand what's wrong with people use the feet for a bit rest my arms how we looking well I think six minutes left maybe six minutes eh
that's going way cooking I thought that's the base I don't need those there we go come on I'm going further field again so get the leaves these are put in the way no more eel will not forget that plastic huh starting to flag what's that 20 minutes in starts to feel it the rush right fast it goes there coming up five minute mark not got enough sticks there Oh any fell we've got about three quarters of a shelter roughly five minutes to go tryna stay as near to the shelter as possible he's all there well less energy ready how are we looking folks on the timer under five minutes I think under five minutes that's a realistic challenge 20 minutes shelter it's not asking too much right I need some visor leaves
come on some on the top stuck that rain coming in it mean quite cool if it was raining that have been pretty real pretty realistic still 800 it's a lot of gaps at the back come on - caps to the back spin I have a sort okay Oh needed more sticks probably there bit too high maybe there's gaps here they don't matter too much how we looking three two minutes two minutes two minutes this always looking alright Tommy the Trump spinner still bearing it oh hey sup those of you on that don't leave any beer okay I think we're nearing 20 minute mark okay big old hole under there t-minus two minutes this is not a pretty shelter if you with some sticks then if you can notice I'm not moving as fast some leaves in a bit of energy one minute just focusing on this side okay we're gonna review this afterwards see yeah we did okay last 30 seconds I say on my watch anyway the time has went be exactly the same but give or take a few seconds Oh ten seconds oh I think that's it three o'clock stop the clock [Music]
well here's the finish shelter 20 minutes shelter there is some gaps it's not pretty
I mean there's big gaps in the back here but I figured that was my feet so if I was sleeping you know I wouldn't mind too much if my feet were sticking out but again another gap there the leaves is the hard bit gathering all those leaves with your hand okay
intense world I'm sweating that is uh yeah that's good fun I like that challenge Jimmy turn this off I like that challenge a bit more real you know a bit more raw like I say here comes a plain good old local woodland yeah a bit more real realistic with that constant timer and no edits yeah sure let's go take a closer look at the shelter by there we go people who there's the blue plastic that I got really annoyed with that's a that's a 20 minute shelter build let's do a tour outside first simple a-frame shape sticks lots of leaves is the gaps I was talking about at the bottom because I figured I didn't need to perfectly do my feet that's just my my guess really you know I wouldn't mind too much at the end of the day if I was here for a long time I could build it up but that is essentially the outside I've used this big birch tree huge silver birch has wedged between the gaps over there and that's this side of it this side was a bit tricky here because it was so steep you can see the angle is pretty steep I should have built up leaves way back here way higher but hey you can only do what you can in 20 minutes inside I left the lease because I would use those as bedding you can see the gaps now at the back but I'm gonna lie on it a minute and see if my feet go out the back I'm a small guy so I reckon my feet won't actually go out that back [Music]
there Mike oh dear oh dear there's a gap yeah not an expert oh dear that gap that rain it's gonna come through you do you know what I'm pretty chuffed for that that is let's get right in here that is pretty pretty darn secure I'm quite happy with that moment of truth can a short little guy lay down with its feet oh and he's even got Headroom yes I don't know if you can see that but my feet are about that much in still oh this is the life I'm really pleased with that I can even go further back that is one let me come back out I'm pretty pleased with that twenty minutes to build this harder than it looks in 20 minutes to try and get a shelter go this is kind of Boy Scout style shelter but I like it and hey if it rains it's gonna do the job it's gonna keep it fairly dry set for those tiny little holes bother than that really pleased I stopped in it as well oh yeah I can just about sit up underneath yeah I can so I can sit if I could have a fire there I can sit here if it's raining and not worry about the getting wet while I'm in here so that's another plus so I'd say I got the height right I got the length right to improve I could have definitely filled in those the feet end because if there was a drop that's gonna create a draught anyway coming through here if the wind was coming here the prevailing wind by the way is coming from that way so it's gonna hit that side of the shelter first and it's coming across through to the camera that way but I'm pretty I'm pretty pleased with it that's all Deadwood that's no tools that was just my hands yeah it's a basic Boy Scout thing to do but that's the that's the fun in it trying to challenge yourself I've built some pretty extravagant shelters over the years you guys know all about that and I've taken some times I've taken days to build different structures but it's nice to get out here and just challenge yourself 20 minutes what can you build there was no cuts in that video whatsoever it's all I'm hoping it's all come out on the GoPro I hope the audio came out as well but that's it
that's essentially it's not pretty at all it's not perfect but it's not it's not a total failure yeah sure there's there's things that could be improved but I'd happily do an overnight in there sadly I'm not going to tonight so I gotta get back to look after the dog but it may be in the future let me know let me know some challenges guys maybe in the future we'll do a a shelter like maybe a 13-minute shelter build and then I have to not add anything more to that shelter and do and do a night in it what do you think of that another one I'm thinking of is like hay because I've got permission to shoot now as well and now I'm I'm wavering towards the dangerous territory of YouTube and bringing in some shooting videos maybe like a kind of pigeon or a vermin wild like it's off yeah like a vermin Captain Kirk like a pigeon squirrel rabbit which across well pigeon certainly here in the in the UK classes vermin so maybe like a pigeon catch and cook or like shoot it and
as you shoot as I shoot it if I can hit it another half an hour to get a fire going and cook it or maybe it may be 40 minutes to get fire in the woods cook it up something like that times challenges that's what I mean like a time challenge so let me know your thoughts guys what are your opinions please give me some suggestions in the comments below give me a time to challenge and I'll do my best to try it for you thanks so much for watching I'm gonna challenge you everyone who watches ta outdoors if you guys make videos out there those of you that you do do a 20 minute shelter build video and tag me in it on Instagram or Facebook or something like that or in my youtube comments let me know and I try and click on your profile and watch it but don't edit the clips out leave it as one 20 minute clip and let me see what you can do and actually you'd be surprised that what you can do when you're pushed to it what you can build in 20 minutes that was like non-stop I didn't slow down with that type of fade a bit towards the end when my legs were burning from doing that all the time you don't think about that when you're building a shelter slowly you don't really think you just do it slowly and you take your time but when you're up and down like that with the leaves all the time your legs start to burn say yeah just just have a go 20 minute challenged here at doors chat tags you go and do it and tag me in it and let me know how you felt when you did it if you're not subscribed already please do be really really appreciate it if you give me a subscription and tip the little Bell you know how it rolls and yeah
today I've got the woodsman hoodie on which is my tea a merchandise helps support the channel if you're interested I'll put all the links in the description below cheers guys I'll see you soon oh oh that needs picking up
whoever did this Madison's fridge Raiders what a pocket I love maths and frigerators whoever did this take it back home then leave your plastic in the woods you nasty people I'm gonna take it home laughs I almost forgot the most important part bushcraft Leave No Trace let's take it all down that Leave No Trace you wouldn't even know that his shelter was built here they say much for watching where's my hat see you soon you
