Solo Camping 24hrs Alone Overnight on the Coast - A Solo Adventure
Description
I head to the coast alone for a 24 hour camping trip. On this solo adventure I do some fishing, setup my tent on a clifftop, watch an incredible sunset on the horizon and enjoy some chill time at the coast. You can't beat a solo camping trip. Being alone with nature, fishing on the wild ocean, hiking through forest, woods and up hills and clifftops. The sea is one of my favourite places to wild camp. In this episode I am wild camping in the south of the UK. Thanks for joining me on the adventure! - Mike

hey folks thanks very much clicking on the video mic here fan ta outdoors got my backpack got my camping gear got fishing rod fishing gear I'm doing a 24 hour overnight so down here on the coast I've just done a 2-hour drive I made it here about 3 o'clock in the afternoon I'm in this dark dense wooden but I'm gonna head down to the coast set the fishing rod up and go straight for some fishing because we were low tide it's right out now so it gives me a really good chance to hopefully get maybe one or two fish once it's done a few hours of fishing I gotta go out to under the headlands try setting my tent in this wind which is about 15 miles now at the moment it doesn't seem like it in here but it is out there hunker down for the night hopefully have a good night's sleep and then maybe do some foraging and things like that tomorrow without further ado let's go fishing
all new fishing today didn't get any weight get getting the GoPro hitched up but hopefully we get some fish on camera it's my fight piece rod I'm having a backpack
folds out like that and each section of the rod has its own pocket sometimes I double them up this is brilliant this thing it's any light okay what's the pieces I've got I seen this before I got a butt section there for the real yeah it's 10 to 30 grams it costs a lot of us stuff is by grams by the way guys because that's just a European we're doing in we don't we do bounces with our beach fishing pounds and ounces but and our sea fishing but I've got a light tackle fishing stuff and lure fishing is generally all grams over here there we go nice seriously might tip action rod I'm gonna fill the bites really easy with that and it should be able to take a big fish I've had a few big fish on this before thousand one thousand size perfect for this rod and just sort of rod combo I'm wearing my lucky ta up doors top so hopefully we catch some fish let's do this all I did is just bring a ziplock bag full of kind of lures little surface poppers some common in imitation worms just just my gay team a bit line my goatee sort of lures their hooks couple of spinners on my choice of spinners and I've also got some weedless ones like this one these are these are amazing these bengio shad it's called a weedless spinner shad
soft plastic or just straight jig head I don't know what to start with I'm gonna start with the spinner cuz I can cast it out and get some distance I've got ten pound braid going on to about eight eight pound fluorocarbon leader very simple stuff very simple another thing I do when I was at home as I wrote down the tie times hmm that way I know I don't have to worry about being caught out in the tide I've written and now say for today high tide was at five arian in the morning this morning low tide was at 1251 p.m. which is gone it's now quarter past three I got here quite lakes it's a two hour drive down so I'm basically fishing a flood tide now which is up until 6:20 so it's a good time to fish really that's why there's so many such a flat ledge at the moment out there I'll show you in a minute this is what I clicked on to my backpack forceps to unhook fish and some line clippers just a snip off even any tag ends etc I've got a bottle of water that I've got with me which I bought on the way down in the truck and then I've got way more water in my backpack in a camel sort of hydration bladder so this is the sort of terrain on fishing off love being a flat nice flat ledge going out there couple of boats out there I wouldn't normally do this while rock fishing but because I need to cast out over the ledge I'm gonna take my trainers off I'm in the casual wear today not getting bushcraft e gonna take these off so I can get weighed further out into the water sexy feet look at those white feet white English feet Brits abroad do it on these ledges here these rocks it's lovely in cold on my feet there's the texture wedge 16 Grammer it's pinging out there
[Music]
no lock on the the Dexter wedge the little jig so gonna try a soft plastic it's not me out there they it is so nice given that that it's really bright I'm not gonna I usually when I go fishing about this and see if if I'm not catching on something that's either really bright already dark or just reverse it so I'm gonna go for something much darker much more natural I say natural natural to the weeds and go for something like this the the shed that the banjo shad which is an articulating Jughead assault articulating in here it's a weedless i can run my finger across there when the fish bites it pushes that barb of the hook out like that you can see that and then and then it cooks the fish obviously so it's gonna put that hook point back in I can run my finger over I know it's weedless so I can fish that through the weeds now [Music]

the absolutely Stampeders fish oh yes there's a benefit for a rest this is a better fish that was on a much retrieve yeah buddy
yes that is a beauty much better fish that would be pan-fried if I wasn't doing a catch and cook where you go buddy this is a munching on this lure so I'm having a break I've been fishing for hour and a half now it's coming up cool if I had to ask to fish which is not amazing going but it's nice to be catching some fish rather than blanking having a little break having a cereal bar taking it in the shade cause it's still pretty warm out and then I'm gonna probably fish for another 40 minutes maybe 45 minutes and head back up the cliffs cuz I'm right down by the sea of as he said it I gotta get back up the cliffs for another hour walk maybe a mile and a half to find a camp spot I want to have a camp spot that's got really good view so we'll see so I finished the fishing sadly only two fish but doesn't matter I enjoyed it nevertheless now I'm gonna head out once the head out of the headland I'll go now onto the headland but the breeze that's why I'm filming ugh the breeze is getting up really strong now hopefully it should be right set up the tent it's about 15 miles now which isn't too bad but it's just a fiddly fiddly thing to do try to put up a ten in the wind with a walking pole like a center pole tent I think we'll be all right it's gonna be I might be a pretty good sunset it's now seven wait for it seven o'clock exactly say always good for a nice sunset and one beer that I brought it's time to head out to the headland set up the tent well find a place to set up the tent and we just take it from there guys to see what happens
look at that it's windy but if I turn it down you might see the sea there's the sea over there it is stunning that is amazing what have you you guys see that Kestrel it's one of our bird of preys over here in the UK incredible bird of prey it's the ability to hover on the spot as you can see they're only small they're not huge but just their ability to hover like that and use the the up the updraft I guess you call it I don't know and the winds hitting it it's coming here and hitting the cliff and pushing up which is resulting in them using that to their advantage to just hover there look at this view
worried about the wind is that not incredible that's why I love the coast so much look at that [Music]
I thought the camera down behind this bench this stone bench just to acts as a wind deflector really good time to have a cup of tea let's be honest what done to try and save space is I've got my stainless steel cup and underneath the lid I have some tea tea bags I have my morning porridge which I've just shaped around the gas bottle there and that gas bottle is actually pinched in you can see it's not gonna come out because I've put some kitchen towel around it which stops the vibration in there otherwise you get this rattling noise like this whenever you're walking it's really annoying and then that kitchen towel can be used to clean things and wipe things but also what that does is if you leave gas canisters inside these stainless steel things and it's damp it will rust inside as you might be able to see on the edge of this one here there's there's a bit rust and that's my fault because I put it in when it was wet I'd had a tea in here then I put this back in afterwards even though I'd wiped it out there was still damp in there and it made it rust inside so it's quite fun to try and clean that so that's just a little thing that I've been doing but for now I'm gonna keep this in my pocket my stove is the same one I've been using for years I've had Oh God five six years now maybe maybe longer than that it's a folding stove and it just all kind of comes out at this has its own hairy case and it's got three legs to it and all you do is to stave itself is you just fight there's there's three holes dotted around a stave and you just hook these in but that one it's really easy to use actually - and another one this side I can't remember where I got this guy so I honestly don't remember so that's the that's the stove now ready to go get the gas on there I like to turn them upside down and just twist them on that way it's quicker that's nice and tight that's ready to go I think this Barker has broken its got a sparker here but I'm pretty sure it's broken so I bought a lighter as backup now let's not burn the grass here it's be sensible it's very dry [Music]
says now I was a lovely tea it's 8:15 I'm gonna set up the tent the sun's still got a world before it sets but the wind is picking up which is obviously my main concern say setting up fairly late because it's wild camping it's kind of what you do but I'm not gonna I'm right on the point of the headland here at the moment I'm gonna go about 100 yards back inland not even that actually 50 yards back in then just because I can tell by the direction of the wind it just might cut it off a little bit and I might get you know 10 mile an hour instead of 15 or 20 still it's gonna be fun putting the tent up let's do it there's my spot the bench that I was at was just down there but I've chosen here because it's nice and flat and the wind is hitting this kind of Ridge here deflecting up still fairly breezy the key to setting up now is to avoid the old dry Cowpat this everywhere watch out for the old P double O everywhere then I'm just using the lux the hex peak which I use before my coastal camp it's just nice and light I've got there kind of carbon ultralight carbon will can poll as well again really light it's just trying to go for a light weight here small footprint TP 1010 takes [Music]

I'm trying to keep in Mike I'm trying to keep your microphone out the wind I can't tell if you if it's hitting the wind the microphone say if it is I apologize we're now 9:15 the sunset was incredible got a nice easy food tonight just a back of Uncle Ben's tomato and basil oh I thought I bought a Mexican damn it I like Mexican spice but it is what it is so you've only got to boil a tiny bit of water I've got my hydration bladder which is actually inside of a dry sack because if my hydration bladder bursts or leaked it would go straight into my bag at least in this dry sack it would just prevent it won't completely prevent it but it would just you know help towards reducing my bag getting a pletely soaked it's just a little thing I've done over the years where I've just had problems with these bursts before not so much this one this is quite heavy duty one so it's just got a dust cap there bite valve and then an on and off valve just here so sorry from shoutings because I think that wind is still on the microphone but that's the on and off valve so I only need a tiny bit going into the cup give it a squeeze oh dear lady beers Gustav is coming outside didn't want to have it in there that's it so we've got bit of rice which I've burnt I've down at the bottom food is food date hmm getting blasted out there lost it so much cow turds around here in a tent near some sheep the reason why I use Uncle Ben's rice is because you literally only need about that much water when you're cooking pasture in things like that or dehydrated food you generally need to use a fair amount of water you need to at least cover all the food in water with water you don't have to with Uncle Ben's rice I say I'm convinced it's the type of rice this kind of ready cooked rice and when you're doing a lot of hiking longer distance trips especially in the hot temperatures like I am today we've had 30 degrees today I've done a lot of walking that I've just not filmed to him from spots but it's really hot so obviously naturally I'm drinking loads of water but by having a small amount of water using my food and not normally a big amount where I'd normally boil with pasture and things it just saves me water so that I can keep myself hydrated a bit more over the wind second time I've put this up on video the previous coastal camping video I did I did put this up well again it was fairly windy there as well based on the pasture Dome with a piston head lager lager beer just the one because it's nice to have a beer when the Sun set in the tent probably not practical because it dehydrates you in the long run where and short run but if you want to chill up to you
in a way good to be out of the woods despite it not in a bad way I love the woods but there's so many bucks I say that as a spider here there's so many bugs in the woods right now it's unbearable but it's ridiculously unbearable I've been bitten away on 20 go see it it's all swollen out here oh yeah loads of bugs out in the woods it's nice to be out the coast where it's windy breezy is no mosquitoes there's so much better no ants it's got to be time to get the old yuto candle out just for a bit of ambient lighting I do love this doesn't give up much light it's just the ambient system doing what actually you know you see that still got quite a bit less it's quarter past 11 I've been reading this book which you guys got a subscribers and told me about hold my side of the mountain written ages ago something like 1959 I think or something like that by Jean Craighead George really good book kind of push crafty about a kid he runs away from home goes off into the woods with nothing but an axe some cordage $40 or something like that
it's $40 but it's really really good it's kind of a look at not kids book but just an easy read he's smashing through it so ever so the subscribers who mentioned this book to me thank you it's a good reading it's nice and small packed winds died down that's for sure it's definitely died down so I'm gonna get some estate and who knows what tomorrow will bring I believe some sunshine bit less wind and some more fish thanks for staying by if you still watch him I'm not seeing the morning
so the wind swung round from south westerly a nice calm a more now to really rage from all these it's still strong that's changed that's a push up in ten packs torch it there was secure about Serena warming they just whip around this valley nice and scenic but it whipped around this valley and as a result it was very very loud line they're gonna Pat the tents up don't find a nice spot potentially fishing spot probably looks like a good day yeah you can tell the winds change because it's not blowing right into the tent it was a tiny fishing boat out there tiny little fishing boat no potty rate nice to see traditional pot anyway probably crap crab pots son well up it's about 6:30 windy still so this is what happened when was coming from over there fairly strong not too bad but coming from that Southwest was coming straight here it was hitting this Ridge and coming up over so my tent was fine I didn't anticipate was that the wind would change and come right round here and now start but but it was it's not coming from here start filtering down here like an air tunnel and just battering the tent absolutely backing it all seems very Cayo honest he thought they were all ripped I came out and I read readjusted the pegs just very slightly but it was more just noises and noise all the seams look fine no no well intact I put some extra pegs in here you don't need to use these but I've put some extra ones just to uh in between the main pegs just to keep it all talk thankfully we're all okay we're alive oh I'm so tired mess that was a rough night that was a really rough night so tired I mean that's the most wind I've ever had in a tent but when you wake up in the morning like this it's soon forgotten room for my backpack and everything there bit of room down here here's the inner tent right the flysheet the walking put the center pole walking pole goes up here I think it's one meter 36 centimeters goes into a reinforced point up here the tent I can raise or lower in a tent with this lever this lever this peg here like that so when when I want to tighten it and raise it up or just pull that and it lifts it all up but it's quite a good amount of space in there to view her enough for mattress and other things but I am gonna lower this tent right down now because I need to pack it up no it's about there usually
I'm on my way now back to actually the first fishing spot because the tides going out but I'm not sure really how far it's been in it was 638 I think high tide so I'm just on my way back there now you know while since I've been to the old quarry this time last year I think it was just derelict quarry now I've never really properly explored it it's like an old fireplace laughs on nature just takes over so I just thought I'd run you through the gear that I've got today's that are interested this is my wee sport woodcraft backpack on the front I have a fishing rod and walking power obviously I could have my walking pot out to walk but that's usually when I'm really tired to do that this is the rifle sleeve this is normally where the buffer rifle would go and you clip the rifle to it it's a hunting bag those fishing rod walking stick tent is on the bottom I'm not gonna take it off but the tempts chap to the bottom there so this is all my gear I brought it's by no means a light backpacking trip got my backpack my water bladder my hydration bladder there this is first aid a first aid kit wound clotting gauze Israeli bandage all for emergencies if I'm fishing on the rocks especially on my own a rag is the most underestimated camping item ever just handy for so many things and I've got my camping items here say sleeping mattress sleeping pad summer sleeping bag travel pillow toothbrush etcetera wash bag basically then this is my filming gear not including the camera and tripod that I'm holding GoPro mount all my batteries lenses filters in here night light for the camera at night head torch GoPro and batteries my yuko light candle that I lit last night and a power bank to be able to charge all these and I've got my cooking setup just gas small gas canister small gas stove stainless steel pot lid knife fork spoon trail mix which I haven't touched onto too much yet porridge haven't had yet salt pepper and obviously the rice I've eaten and some cereal bars I've eaten and I got my fishing gear fishing rod fishing reel an assortment of lures we'll show you in a minute and some weights which adds to the backpack weight as well but I need them to fish then I've obviously got my books I was reading last night so that's that's quite a lot gear for 24 hours there's a way I could have easily done a minimal gear trip and that is not taking my fishing gear at all from just camping I could have eliminated all of that things out of this cooking setup I'd probably need all that to be honest to eat out of this this is an extra the UK gear candle lantern I don't necessarily need that at all the GoPro I didn't have to bring it just means you wouldn't have got the first-person view of when I was fishing and if it rains it's handy to have that so again I could have eliminated I put in a par what I could eliminate maybe that the GoPro mount that that I keep that I need the camera night night travel pillow I could just use a hoodie I wanted to or teach another t-shirt so that didn't assess 'ti and then I prefer to have all that first-aid as a necessity if I'm honest hydration bladder I like these because when you drink through them you can compress them down and they take up less room than a water bottle would that's personally why I like him and yeah that's pretty much it you know I could have eliminated all of that gear there and gone with just this lot which is much much lighter but that's just the way it is so these are my fishing weights it's actually a fly box but these are my sea fishing jigs so I've got a number of different sizes all different weights different sized hooks got smaller ones up here you sort of zero just half a gram to three gram weights down to sort of slightly heavier ones different stars here and then his focus is on the other side I've got my larger dickheads so these are kind of upwards 10 grams 15 grams 12 grams of weight bigger hooks bigger jig head size and some colored ones as well they're the berkeley ones these colored ones but they're quite expensive again I've also got weedless hooks as well which I brought with me so that's that's a fair bit of extra weight on my backpack to be honest you know all those LEDs like that it's quite a bit of weight but it's not it's necessary if I want to come fishing here got the Dexter wedge jig there which is for macro I try and bring lures for each different type of species that I can catch so that's for macro really that and Pollock this is for Pollock that could also catch bass this spend Jo shared which I was catching on yes a that's for Pollock and bass but also as he saw rats so soft my stickler hard lure and then there's also another harder in here like a plug called a plug just a crankbait sort thing then I got worm hooks if I was bait fishing I'd use these long shank hooks then in a bag inside of bag it's these Murray Q I so me worms these are amino boosters so they're centage soft plastic lures again good for rats fishing pretty gunky when you use them though but I've got them some large soft plastic lures again as well a different dark color these ones would need a jig head they're not weightless at the moment I could rig them realest and some smaller ones a smaller fish and then some fishing line so that's it that's that's the soil you know I've got way more fishing tackle at home obviously but I tried to get bit minimal and what I'm catching what I'm taking with me sorry this is all not a necessity to bring if I didn't go fishing I wouldn't need to bring I'll show you so water-wise I bought my hydration bladder here which carries 2 litres and I had that small plastic bottle yesterday
I don't usually on a 24 hour overnight I don't need anything more than two two litres really three litres if it's really really hot but if you conserve the water well enough I've always done ok on two liters I do have a Sawyer mini filter but there's no need for me to bring it because I know what I can cope with in this area for 24 hours if I was doing longer I will bring my soy and mini filter and try and find a small stream or river nearby but some yeah this one's handy it's handy having the valve as well being able to shut it off so doesn't leak everywhere also handy being able to drink whilst on the go rather than having to get your boss water bottle out of your bag just a bit easier I always put this in first it's really hard to get in when your bags full obviously now I'm drinking through it it's getting easier and easier to pack here usually just stays in here so there is a little slot in the back of this backpack for a hydration bladder however there's no area for one to come out which is a bit of a shame for the thing to come out so I'll just leave it out for a moment and I tuck it it does have some straps here so I tuck it down this one there and then actually I tuck it back up on itself so doesn't care if it leaked as I'm walking kind of like that it's not just sits on my right hand shoulder that's where I like it then I usually go something big like a sleeping bag to open up the bag and give it some shape so wedge that in there then then wedge get that shape out in the bag mattress in pillow not a necessity I just like this pillow gives me a comfy night usually then wash gear down the back camera batteries filters everything like that in my gas remember I put in here sort it in here but now that's really junky and I've used the tissue so I'm gonna store the gas in here it doesn't make a difference read it just it's a bit more space in there yes sorry yes that's the canister gas stove now they're bitching nerds down the back my back this is not the order I packed it before it'll be seen real in somewhere but awkward to pack efficient really did
gopro chest mount obviously i could wear the chest mount for gopro night would save more space in here okay fishing lures
again not a necessity you need to take it but it's nice to have something in this side pocket sometimes it's good to actually feel the side pockets first with the camber quick top get some I cook stuff in teen salt pepper again not a necessity porridge this side first aid is ready burnished right tighten that down oh yeah thanks everyone and boy ta patch by the way they sold out I'm gonna get some more in stock on ta outdoors comm keep an eye out on the back here there's a top lid got my cable which charges things I have my power bank this is usually all pretty tight by now camera light the top tier as well is trail mix that's it's just in on the top so it's the first thing I can get to so got water and food easily accessible yes there's a lot of gear 24 hours I've done much lighter gear nights but I'm fishing as well and that's why it's fishings taking up a lot of gear then just on the front I just touched my walking stick in there hiking pole walking stick the fishing rod pick up their job done that's how I packed it
that's the gear camping and fishing that's the camera obviously I'm carrying as well as the other gear naturally we're going to go for the same caliber as yesterday sadly I'm getting too much weed so I think this is a bit of a lost cause to be honest
where the winds have been up overnight it's just stirred up all this weed it's just getting caught in the line all the time
no luck with the fishing it's getting honor today now getting pretty tired but nice have the rocks one to myself it's been an awesome trip really loved it so far
you can head back to the truck eat some trail mix on the way then probably head back home at some point it's gonna climb some rocks now Oh
Steve Larry yeah it's well Cara that's a wild carrot prom is the seeds it's well carrot seeds you can eat these they're really citrusy they had a nice sort of flavoring to sea bass and things like that
