Log Cabin Life: First Night in the Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin
Description
I spend my first night alone in the Off Grid Log Cabin which we built from recycled Pallet Wood. Being alone in the woods in the tiny house was really something special. I felt completely disconnected from society and much closer to nature and the forest. With the woodstove burning and candle lanterns lighting the cabin, it felt rustic and cosy. Living off the land is something I am striving to learn more about. Now that I have this tiny cabin as a base to learn Bushcraft, Foraging and Cooking skills. As well as develop my survival skills. Temperatures were cold outside but the cabin was like a sauna.
I had the best nights sleep I have ever had whilst camping. I enjoy some food cooked on the stove and open some subscriber presents that were sent to me. To watch the full log cabin build visit the playlist below.

so this is my first overnight in the cabin which we made it myself and my dad made out of completely recycled pallet wood although this is wood from pallets that we've collected from industrial estates in just general supermarkets and things like that we've tried to make it a bit more of a home so we have obviously candle jar lanterns with a few dotted around the cabin itself got a window here I still need to get a curtain really for the window because at the moment it's obviously quite open there's no one around because I'm in the middle of the woods but it'd be nice just to have a curtain just shut off and obviously when it's I like personally like waking up to the light in the morning natural light for the window rather have curtains open but obviously it'd be nice to have that option anyway this is a folding table that we made which you saw me set up earlier again all from pallet wood I set my bed up earlier again all made from pallet wood some from larger pallets some from obviously this the average size the standard sized European pallet I believe you guys in the u.s. might have all Canada as well different sized pallet to us a lot of comments that we've had on the series that you've got a different sized pallet to us they say that ours comment when you say ours looks smaller or larger I can't remember so I'm just eating beef broth soup which I've cooked up here and some freshly baked bread would you need to see in the bottom the screen which was cooked in the oven attachment on the G stove that's little stove that I'm using is the G stove Heatley really really really good stove and the attachments that come with it are just awesome and it fits in the cabin perfectly we do have plans to make a recycled stove eventually but that might just be a project it might not stay in the cabin we'll see but certainly at the moment the G stove is killing it in here it's really good lovely and warm I don't have my hat on I'm just wearing a wool shirt we haven't done any chinking in the side of the cabin and in the cabin gaps in the walls of the pallet where we got no chinking and I'm absolutely writing it is really warm it's like a sauna really but it's great I'm really happy that I'm doing my first day of a nighter here because we've been building it for the past few weeks and you many of you've been following it on the YouTube channel and you've given us amazing feedback for the series so I really wanted to do the overnight so and finally I get to do it and this is gonna be quite a fast edit turn around I'm hoping to get this video up tomorrow on my channel so when you guys depending on when you're watching this if you're one of the first few people watching it when it's gone up I actually filmed it yesterday so it's probably one of my fastest turnaround some edits that I'm gonna have to do because I'd like to get up on the channel but life is good right now guys life is very good well I did burn the bread a bit I left it in a bit too long not to worry waste not want not I chose beef broth because it's thick it's heavy its job calorific soup that really doesn't make you feel very hungry after you've eaten it so great for winter which I'm in at the moment Miller winter here in the UK I'm from the south of England and it doesn't get freezing freezing down here we don't get like minus 20 minus 30 like you guys some of you guys do probably maxed out - 8 - 7 on some nights nothing that's that's literally probably the most we'd ever get
so I do have a camera like with me I've just turned it off so you guys can see the ambient lighting one of the cameras has gone up behind me I've got a few more that I need tonight but this is what the cabin looks like or the kitchen table shall I say this is what it looks like when it's just candlelight which is lovely I really like the ambient light anyway yeah this was a candle if you can see it I've just got on a candle holder pop some pinecones at the bottom of it just for well aesthetic value really I know yes they're flammable but that's only when you put flame to them and the flame shouldn't go to them it would just be wax dripping down I've been doing this for years and I've had no problems whatsoever this candle holder here is really old it's actually they I think it's got a date on it somewhere I bought this at a vintage shop and it wasn't like oh you know like how authentic vintage gear retro I think they call it vintage gear it was proper repented gear so real good quality stuff and I bought this they will wobble around I just leave them on the table for decorative value but that's what it does look like when you when you don't I can see that when you don't have the pinecones all over it Mike and it's got a clip here that pinches the candle in that's just handy you see it and all the old-school British dramas and things like that period dramas and you just got a finger hole there that you can just put put fingers through and just walk around and be able to place it I'm gonna have some shelves up around here as well so I can just place the candle around and just use less electric power really that's the plan go up myself good old bottle of tribute Cornish pan out can't go wrong with tribute the old spoon open oh so good I love my real ales IPAs that I come all got a bit a comb-over going on here cuz of the cap there the Donald Trump anyway I've actually brought with me a load of subscriber gifts and mail that you guys have sent me cuz a lot of people which I always put in the video description of all my videos some of you pick up on that some of you don't I guess I haven't really mentioned it in a while but I do have a Pierre box and I know lots of you want to send me stuff so I've got some stuff that people have sent me that I want to share with you well firstly we've got a postcard says Zurich at the top it says hi Mike lots of greetings from Switzerland enjoy watching all your videos and posts on the web
awesome block you got all the best in 2018 and keep on posting greets David David thank you very much ma'am that's so do you know what I might even pop him up I need to get a pin but I might pop him my postcards here yeah let's stick some subscriber stuff in I don't need this one doesn't say which arrow arrow post I think it's from a board it's a lot it's a dirty letter this one not as in that sense it's just really dusty dear Mike please find enclosed some pieces of char proof to you enjoy to you and your tinder pouch just strike a spark into it and put it into a bird's nest to blow into a flame like a blade boat remember yours P 1 8 9 D 6 D 6 why it must be your username well thank you buddy
I do like chalk off I make it myself as well but I don't have to make as much now because you just sent me saucy massively appreciate it I've got some shorts aw thank you I didn't actually get a Christmas card from Chris Madden so Chris thank you very much I've got your letter here but I didn't bring the car with me unfortunately I hung it up with all the other Christmas cards but thank you ma'am thanks Chris this is a bigger box I'm Switzerland again Swiss are killing it on my PA box gonna open it with the TBS bore K 7 2000 steel yes this is from Felix I believe tears Felix I will use your box on the wood burner as well in this video so thanks man this one's called crafting with the pocket knife a practical companion might even keep this in the cabin and it's also oh this is awesome Felix this is awesome man that is oh man that is so good let me try to find a decent but all all carving projects with a with a Swiss Army knife dear Mike your pallet wood cabin series was just great of course I also like to watch your other videos but this series was special for me I think that your father-son relationship at least the one in front of the camera can be very Inspira and inspirational for many fathers I have three little children and love the idea to build a cabin with my sons this is just a gift for you and your father with this gift I want to say thanks a lot for your great work I have no expectations that you show or introduce the books in a video or somewhere else I will not stop you if you want but I expect nothing I hope you have many great projects together there greetings from Switzerland Felix Felix unbelievable and actually I'm gonna give you a plug because it says down here I also have I have also a little YouTube channel his name is is Felix imlah I'll put a link guys there in the text it would mean the world for me if you visit my channel once everyone head over there after this video and hit that subscribe button - Felix it will really help him out and trust me for all the dads and labs out there these look I'm not plugging these because Felix has sent this in a nice way he's not come at me like a company would he's just come at me in a personal manner and I know he watches my videos so I will give him a plug I'm happy to but this pocket knife practical companion but where you can whittle stock is that's such a good thing for kids and as an ex teacher myself that's like an invaluable resource and I think that's really good this is a big package and it says here is some stuff for the totally awesome outdoors and totally awesome fishing shows that starts channel by the way ta fishing hope this stuff helps really enjoying the videos you upload this stuff is for the off-grid cabin woo we're in it now really enjoyed this series also really enjoy totally awesome fishing show great tips and tricks I've learned a lot from both of these channels thank you from Jack and Tony across the sea from Belfast shout out to everybody over in Northern Ireland nightmare on oh push LED lights three LED bulbs I've never seen anything like that before in my life another LED bulb light where you pull the
heavy-duty rope are you guys still watching I'm amazed if you are I'm really grateful if you are still watching because I know you watch someone else open in their post is not the most amazing interesting thing but maybe you guys find that interesting if say yes no hard baits we got us popper yes might have to give these it going we are wedding Pike and perch season at the moment it's got a rat in it I believe that's the fishing there Jack and Tony fishing there no us you you guys know us too well I know you watch both YouTube channels if you're sending me stuff like this as well far too coins tool hooks screwdrivers a hacksaw let's keep this in the cabin a wall solar light so you guys have to go out and give it would for the night Oh cabin life I know a lot of people think it's a shed but perfectly liveable and my bed down here table stove bookcase it's got everything you need set the toilet which we will be building an outhouse at some point soon these candles in particular burning pretty fast I know you guys have said about some Sub Pop me so cameras are burning pretty fast I'm just using this is the sort of stock candle I'm using I have no idea what type of wax it is it's just wax that's that's been burning for an it just about an hour and a half this one on the right about our 45 now say you get a bit quite a bit out of them but sadly this one on my right just I see you stuffed maybe that's something for the PA box guys candles never have enough
so this little contraption dad's made is usually for when the can was really low it just helps you lift it in and out of the lift it in and out of the jar like that so you can lift it out and then light it but what he's done here then if you can see this he's done here what dad's done here is you put a little nail through the bottom of this tealight holder so that you can snap the candle on it to keep it level and then lower it lower it into the jar although this is a bit big for the jaw notch it's gonna stick out a fair I'm home so what we've done with this joy is put some reflective material on the back of it in the hope that it will punch some light back out that way and if this is a gravel I've picked up a bag of it we need all of it it's more to be able to crush the candle in what that and then that should one would hope
okay you guys see that say gravel tandoor sits in the gravel and then there's the reflective material at the back which isn't having an impact yet until that candle burns down so when that burns down a bit more we'll see what it looks like that works well on the table really it's not hanging one we just keep we're just recycling as much as we can with this whole project so bigger jar here [Music]
unfortunately I don't really I've got a bent candle that makes oh I just got it without burning myself but I do use this if I if I need to just a spark a flame to her if I need to get down there but that's pretty cool that works well so this big one I might place there I guess because that's metal it's yes yeah I can put my hand there and it's not Barney so it shouldn't burn this a metal roof anyway so that'd be fine so that is cool with a bookcase
[Music]
it was a fire we were dancing on a wider record
[Music]
we found homes nice walk we liked what we saw seemed so strong until the fall the fire
[Music]
just so you know what sleeping-bag about to get into bed got my sleeping bag palsies a bag anyway a sort of inflatable really old-school inflatable pad mattress really inflatable mattress that dad uses for fishing and then my GP five-pound Rome at the old foam roll mat underneath it's gonna be really comfy so I've also got my bedside tape off you look so what is effectively my chair in the cabin becomes my bedside table at night so I've got my backpack for any bits I need to get to bedside table there and actually if I can get my book I've been reading from the subscriber Felix bedside
let's our table and slash chair probably table and everything still there I've dampened it right down you can see that's opened roaring array and I just dampen it right down looking forward to my first night in the cabin it's so toasty in here I'm very excited I don't think I'm actually gonna get much sleep so I'm so excited about being doing the first night in the pallet wood recycled pallet wood cabin with it's pretty much everything in here is just made from recycled materials it's awesome so very excited and but we'll leave you with a nice shot of my nostrils see in the morning guys
[Music]
I slept probably best sleep I've ever heard of see on an overnighter obviously I'm used to sleeping in tents or under a tarp so you don't get as good asleep because you're just and in the elements a little bit more yeah greatly really we could it's now 7:30 slept in a bit and I need to get the stove going because it is quite cold and I want to get some breakfast on and have a morning cup of coffee [Music]
great
my role map fits perfectly on the Potter wood cabin bed you look at the width of it it actually sits perfectly under the lip and the edge here then if that was purposely purposeful right now for sheer pop-up either way it's a good fit that's awesome really comfy actually with the roll mat and then the inflatable mat on top
I've got a bench step my gear at the center
Oh loads of room at she now to move around loads of room and I can put bits of pots and pans and things like that up there so my friend Tim made me these never Billy card bags and I forgot it I use them the wrong way around the other day when I use them in a video so this is from Tim he does he's called Blue Angelica bushcraft this stuff so it's just a ten-cent a zebra bitty like that the little bag on top and in this one I store my coffee beans all in there you probably can't see them but I'll show you in a minute and then inside I still porridge in the lid and there is also under the mid another storage bag which you can put more so this is my little like hand grinder for coffee beans not sponsored at all by this but it's really good I use this going camping sometimes it's called the hump brothers and I think I've just got some Colombian beans remember which ones I put in that thing it's just a ceramic grown to this use my old wooden spoon here this one so basically I got the grinding plates inside here and this is like the collection table so there's my beans
or the smell of fresh coffee you cannot beat that smell first this is really fresh coffee because I'm using the beans so just get a scoop for maybe to take your mouth or even lid on now I've done the I've done these fairly coarse the grind not too fine cuz I'm using French press let's just wipe the way I like it Sosa's you about 100 times to grind it down just pour pull the bottom part out my freshly ground coffee is in there this comes a little cloth canvas cloth carrying case nice and easy for camping now the water is already boiling on the G stove so I'm gonna fill the belly up with water and then pour it now this is the amazing thing about the juice they've got the oven there which is reading 200 degrees already within 10 minutes of slicing this and our top commander here we have boiling water you can take that on and off whenever I want turn the tap on it's amazing this thing just got enough room for it leave enough room for another coffee as well a few this morning then what I'd like to do with the press pull it right up reverse the lid and basically trap all the aromas in there it gives it a bit more of a fruity aroma taste of the coffee rather than spin it round and let the air out so I trap all that air just to allow the flavor to stay in there really now obviously this will just keep boiling and evaporating so to save the water just lift it off put it down on the floor it's now ready so spin it round let's say the spouts facing the other spelt there press it down look at that which means gold that's such a nice color Anton's cooks are again Seoul of Siberia where Instagram

I was following the G stove on Instagram and they did a few posts sort of showing how to cook in their oven and all of the shots that they posted had the food was wrapped in tin foil which makes sense it just it stops it burning it cooks it a bit more evenly so thanks to you stay for go follow them on Instagram buzz they've got a great account didn't bring any source with me can you beat that for a breakfast bacon warm bacon roll look how much better that Fred's cooked as well golden right it's perfect I'm probably making you guys really hungry aren't you every time I watch other youtubers eating food it makes me are basically you're just gonna cook bacon sorry or something that breaks way better cuts fresh coffee fresh bread this is just winning absolutely winning cheers guys coffee and a bacon sandwich in the morning such a British thing bacon sarnies fish and chips and bacon sarnies and Yorkshire puddings love it guys I just want to say thanks so much for watching the video really appreciate it it's been a really really cool night I've really enjoyed it I didn't get called once last night we are January middle of January 2018 at the moment and yet didn't get cold at all the stove was incredible obviously one thing I would say the candles in the jars one of the jars candles I think it was this one when you can see where it smoked up its basically obviously disappeared the candle but what happened was and it seems really simple but sometimes you pay attention to things more when you're all relaxed and just you sort of watch things slowly you know if you just take your time you notice things better so what I noticed was to imagine this is the jar the candle was slightly tilted over to the side and what that meant is that it just ate away at the wax on one side and the wax dripped down really fast which meant the candle burned out honestly in about an hour and usually the previous the exact same candle that I put in this where it's really straight burn for three and a half probably for about four hours so don't know it's just something I've never paid attention to before is if you're putting candles in jars like these long stick candles or just a candle in the candle holder make sure it's as vertical and as straight as possible and that way you can see why this one the wax barely drips down and it just burns for way longer so this is something I noticed from from the jar one and it just the wax went all over the gravel stones in it look there's only like one stone moving around they're all solid now so I'm gonna have to break them all up and try and get the wax out somehow but yeah just a little tip there for you guys I've left the pinecones just on the table now for a bit of rustic appeal rather than have them on here obviously the wax that's building up on here I quite like it when it's like that there this is very I feel like this is very British I've got my candle holder my candle stick just going into the west wing of the manor house in my dressing gown robes Jeeves bring me a coffee please anyway that's what it feels like but brilliant
yeah thanks so much for watching the video if you're interested in how we built this cabin from pilot woods literally from a number of different pallets all right we've got a whole video series on the YouTube channel and I'll pop a link in the video description below and you can start from Episode one I think we've done eight episodes so far or maybe seven episodes so far so you could start at Episode one and just work your way through all the way to the latest episode we've got some really cool things more recycled stuff again I hope you enjoy it thanks very much for sticking by guys and I'll see you soon in the next video [Music]
