Bushcraft Camp Update 16 - Thermal Shelter Upgrade (Survival)
Description
In this Bushcraft Camp Update episode, we focus on improving the thermal convection of the super shelter. The large lean to shelter needed improving due to the fact that the size of it meant that the thermal properties were not very good. So I adapted a technique used by Canadian Wilderness Survival & Bushcraft instructor Mors Kochanski, which is a simple modification of his famous supershelter. You don't need many tools to build this part of the super shelter. Using just a clear plastic sheet, a log and a few nails, we created a screen down the front of the shelter which traps heat from the fire, similar to the greenhouse effect. This heat then radiates around the shelter to keep you warm in the winter months. It's a great upgrade to the bushcraft camp and I am looking forward to seeing how it performs during the colder months. In the original super shelter, Mors uses a mylar reflective blanket to radiate the heat around the shelter. Perhaps I might add this in the future to the wilderness shelter.
The camp is really coming along now that I have spent more time here. With the addition of the new adjustable wood roof, it has made it much easier to control lighting conditions and keep the rain out of the bush camp. The hunting tower and ladder are still holding up well, although I wish I burnt the ends of the logs going into the ground similar to the ancient Shou Sugi Ban method to help preserve them for longer. The secondary lean-to shelter with moss roof is getting a little run down and needs some work. I would also like to move the log store away from the camp. I'm still not happy with the fire pit but this can be changed quickly enough. Thanks for joining us on this adventure and be sure to subscribe if you enjoyed it and let us know your thoughts on the theory time question that we talked about. - Mike

welcome to bushcraft camp update 16 now I'm here with my dad if you want to watch last week's episode camp update 15 there's a link in the corner somewhere up here the focus of this video was on the super shelter now I've called I've kind of called this camp a super shelter but really an actual super shelter is is designed by a guy called Moore Skowronski who wrote loads of bushcraft books and he's a very experienced wilderness instructor from Canada I believe but what he does is he gets some plastic clear plastic sheeting and he uses it on a much smaller scale shelter that's much more portable as well and you don't have to carry as much gear but essentially what this does is we've built this large lean-to shelter here I've still got to fill in the gaps in the logs but to keep the heat in we've obviously got the tarp roof to keep it waterproof and some debris on top to insulate it a little bit but what we've done here is this is an old mattress that I had and we've used the plastic sheeting the clear plastic sheeting from that mattress and to tie it up we've kept it pretty simple we've used some wood toggles here which he saw dad doing earlier and there's another one just at the end up there now the small wood toggle
essentially this is like what you do with tents when you roll up the the windows and things in tents so all we do is to tack down this one here now this is more for wintertime when it's much much colder this rolls down this chute like this it rests it doesn't look pretty but it's practical it rests on their same the other side it rests on that one over there obviously I would be in the shelter at this point I wouldn't roll it down from the outside I'd do it from the inside so I'd be there in bed now what happens is we've got the heat from the fire and this is what Moors can ski has spent years studying and and showing you in his bushcraft books and things like that the heat from the fire comes through into this shelter it penetrates this plastic sheeting now in Moore's his books in his survival books he has mylar blankets at the back which is it which are those reflective black survival blankets that you can get they fold up into a real small square like that and he has them over the back of a shelter with the tarp on top much much smaller shelter than that than this one and essentially what that does is the heat comes in here it's it's thermal radiation so the heat then penetrates through this it reflects off which we don't have in here but we might install eventually it reflects off the mylar blankets on the inside of the shelter and that bounces that heat and circulates that heat and traps it really within your shelter to keep you warm it's really in it's done in a much colder climate here in the South of England it's you know I've done overnighters in here fine without this sheet but it's more of a practical side of things it goes down the laws of physics and it just helps you retain much more heat in a shelter so essentially we finally built a super shelter it's not the exact one it's not a kind of proper one we've adapted it we've modified it for our camp here now obviously to roll it up because I don't need that down all day I just roll the sheet we've got a stick here and we did use tacks it wasn't pure bushcraft we did use some taps some roofing tacks or nose
rolls up nice and easily there's the loop the other side so you just drag that down toggle in which one you can let go there I mean that's not even 30 seconds to take that down and now I can access my shelter in here bed I've still got to sort out and now I can access my shelter and I've obviously got the open fire so this is much more practical in a winter situation I wouldn't need this in the summer where the back end of summer at the moment which is why we've built it ready for winter so we're super pleased that we've got this done and dad's obviously on the camera he's helped me out with this good to have dad back at the camp previous one was this roof which week would you roll out it's just the tarp roof which is adjustable I can roll this out to here if I want or to here at any point across this roof so that this way any smoke from the fire just goes straight up and out of the shelter and then if it's raining if it's torrential rain I can whack it right across and probably we need to put a hole in it at some point but if it's just light rain we can just put it here everything under this part of the shelter is completely dry ah say we're sitting outside a today because we we feel like doing something bit different we don't need the fire heat so we've had our tea and we were just chatting actually about a theory time we were just chatting and we thought it'd be a good theory time so for those that don't know this is my diagram by the way you would have seen dad in loads of the videos but for those that don't know what theory time is is where usually myself and dad will sit around a campfire randomly talking about just stuff just just things yeah just things about the world the planet life in general and it we end off we end up going down a complete rabbit hole and talking for hours about it but you guys like it so yeah you guys seem to really enjoy it so we're back here obviously we're bringing theory time back and what we do is we come up with a theory what we've been talking around about the campfire and we ask you guys to comment your opinions on what you think about our theory now obviously we haven't gone and done a load of research yes to get evidence to back up our theory we've just it's campfire chat we've just come up with random things we've not gone and done any research so you have to kind of take it with a pinch of salt and it's a bit wacky so dad hey what is that dad here has come up with a theory which I thought was quite interesting actually which we were just talking about now so what's the theory that well with Higgins we sit when the campfire and what we work in we do father or son stuff and you just chat in anyway my thoughts are we're currently ruining the planet I don't think anybody's going to dispute that the human species is totally ruining decimating stripping the planet of everything we're over populating it sources resources food etc what about Mars well that have water on it because people say ah only only our earth can support the humanoid species because I walked over what about the canals that they say did exist on Mars yeah they've recently found that something well what about all the gases that around the rings of Saturn are those gases caused by wait for this wait for this this is nothing other humanoid species which were on those planets within all of our galaxy with or solar system we've got where all of these - inhabited by humanoid species and they've ruined every single one those gases were caused by humans much as we're making our carbon emissions and gases now and therefore they've ruined it the weather systems have stripped the planet of everything there's no nothing they're living at all and we are just on the cusp of turning the last the last planet in the so you reckon we lived on all those planets previously we decimated all the resources yes we explicitly made ourselves extinct examine exactly as I said to him or how do we get to earth it you know how but you're saying we didn't do any of that we just decimated the resources kind of killed ourselves off as a species killed the planet off as a specie parasite humans are a parasite yeah we're a predatorial parasite we won't even well we naturally want to grow as human state that's kind of the purpose of a human life in a way and a natural mammals in general as well almost everything in the world trees is the whole purpose is to reproduce and grow but that's a mess of quite out-there theories well exactly so what do you guys think some of you might say ah I've heard all those stories about there really were Martians hang on a minute
were there really Martians they could have come across to our planet and we were the original progeny and do you know why I think this and I told you this almost every single religion has a point
towards the sky it could be a cross it could be pyramids it could be in the Incas they could be sacrificial temples but why do they not do it down here why is that yearning to get high why is it they're trying to get height there's a second theory of we just saw two theories you know is is with the last species but why why do they all all worship he seems to be upwards church spires upwards they'd like to meet something when you pray like people praying it up what it's all about tell us what are your theories on there there's a double theory we love there's no wrong answer or right answer to these questions in our opinion there it's just we're happy for everyone to just comment what you think there's nothing too stupid to say we don't mind we're just try and read through the comments and see as many as we can and we just find it quite interesting on what your opinions are on it we're gonna be doing more of these theory times certainly over the kind of autumn and winter months it's a great thing to do around a campfire I'm sure a lot of you you guys actually do it anyway with friends with family it's just that it's just sometimes you could really go down that rabbit rabbit holiday gets quite scary sometimes when you I can really go into the depths of life and you think oh man I tell you the very first time I got this I was in oil and work of the Irish tourist pool with a guy called Norman Dunlop I think Norman stir withers are not sure he worked for the fisheries board there it was like I can't tell you it was midnight or 1 o'clock in the morning and we were trying to catch a few hot toddies guinnesses we were on this pier Feeny pier lot of guys know it's a very famous pier and we were waiting trying to catch his under a tray which in the end Norman did lose but we would just say I don't have very very young and then we just came out what's past the last star well there's the edge of our galaxy isn't it yeah but what's past that so is there an edge to it well what's past the edge and in the end if it starts working too much I've never forgotten now remember that night yeah probably Norman's fall he's probably got me into these theories but we were just two guys here we're just fishing away you know what's past that star there's loads to talk about there guys so comment away I'm gonna have to lay down oh yeah good dizzy but thanks so much for listening and for watching this video really appreciate it do check out badge Channel totally awesome fishing oh we've got clothing as well support us we've got a cloning range ta official com you don't have to get the clothing at all we just thought we'd let you know if you enjoy the videos it's a great way of supporting the channel and also dad's channel ta fishing head on over to Dad's channel hit the subscribe button and thanks so much for watching we'll see you really soon on the next episode of ta outdoors [Music]
