BUSHCRAFT CAMP in the FOREST - Making PRIMITIVE GLUE, Repairing the SHELTER
Description
I head to the Bushcraft Camp in the Forest. Start your free trial today at http://www.squarespace.com/taoutdoors to get 10% off your first purchase. Whilst in the forest, I forage for some pine resin from a fallen tree, which I make into Primitive Glue by melting the resin on the fire to create pine pitch, which was used by our primitive ancestors thousands of years ago. It is an important survival skill to have and could be very useful when in a survival situation. Whilst at the bushcraft super shelter, I also work on repairing and building a new wall in the large lean to shelter, as the logs in this wall have gone slightly rotten over the years.
The next big project here at the Camp is making a wood roof. Since improving the fire pit and raising the tarp roof it has made the air flow at camp so much better. I am still not sure on the roof design yet, whether to go for a log cabin style roof, or a tipi style, or just a simple frame and debris roof. This will be the main theme for Bushcraft Camp Update 15. Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. Thanks for joining me on the adventure at my Camp in the woods!

hey folks thanks very much for clicking on this video I've just sharpened my tools I'm ready to head out back to the bushcraft camp there's lots of jobs I need to do a couple of maintenance and repairs and also perhaps some building stuff as well before I head to camp I just want to say thanks to my sponsor for this video which is Squarespace as you guys know I've been building my website and trying to develop my brand and I'm doing this through Squarespace which has incredible web development tools that make it easy for use for someone like me who knows absolutely nothing about web site coding or anything like that a lot of you wanted to see kind of basic bushcraft gear and just links to some of the items that I use out here in the woods too what we've got in these three pages is the first page is kind of your basic budget bushcraft gear then there's an intermediate level of bushcraft gear and a kind of advanced level of bushcraft gear that will be live on the website soon again well my website it's not quite live yet but it will be live in the next couple of weeks Squarespace are actually offering you guys my subscribers a free trial and 10% off your first purchase all you need to do is go to WWE on /ta outdoors so if you guys are looking to build your website build your brand perhaps you're a blogger or maybe even maybe you're even a youtuber like myself and you're looking to try and grow your brand then Squarespace is definitely the platform for you so once again big thanks to Squarespace for sponsoring this video and remember if you want to set up your own website head to WWE where space comm /ta outdoors that's enough talking from me gonna head to the bushcraft camp and get some work done [Music]

so I've just to finish doing some maintenance off the far wall over here I'll just show you if I turn this ISO up a bit so I've just finished this wall here because it was completely rotten out it's a couple years old mistakes that start to rot down so I had to use some of the leftover poles here use their mistakes because they were dry and it just seals off this area a little bit better now you can see it just still using those dead sticks but it just looks a little bit neater and that wall is now separating the raised bed and the hunting Tower pretty easily so that was one job we needed to do fixed so what you saw me doing for most of the day actually this earlier is making these pine pitch glue sticks mmm what they are really is the the resin from the pine trees as they kind of have wounds and where branches snap off the tree the tree releases this resin to protect it really it's not it's not SAP they are different resin and SAP but what you can do with the resin itself is if you pick it off the tree like I did earlier with a knife or a sharp tool you can then heat it on a fire and it will melt down and it actually goes black like this once you've melted it down and then as that's cooling it will turn it's basically like wax the same almost the same consistency as wax as that's cooling down you can then use a stick to just wrap that glue around us a clue it's the it's the primitive glue the the pitch wrap that around the stick and as it cools you can dip it in water and it sets off nice and hard now if you listen you can see if I knock this together it's rock hard literally rock hard so what I can do is I can actually put these in my tinder bag and carry these around in the woods with me and if ever there's something I need to repair or perhaps make a primitive Aero primitive you know bow spear anything like that or just something that I'm crafting and I need to repair I can melt this down again and then mold it over the area that needs repairing and it was set nice and hard like a rock this is used I mean thousands and thousands of years ago as primitive glue pine pitch is used as primitive people using it for securing an arrowhead to the shaft and things like that axe heads that everything sort of primitive wise primitive tools time pitch was used really good it's also good mosquito repellent if you can melt it down
it is super flammable I mean very very flammable what I was doing on the fire where I was melting it in the top of my billy can thing which is pretty much ruined now is is actually quite dangerous and what happened I don't know if I caught it on the camera but when it gets to a certain temperature it just combusted just ignites so you have to be very careful of that what you should do really is either put if you were using a billy can for example put the Billy can on top get the water boiling and almost kind of poach it let the steam then melt it so use it use like a double boiler if you've got two tin cans or something like that just put one inside the other boy and boil it down it's a little bit safer the way I was doing it was you know worked it was fine for me but just be aware that it can go almost like a like like petrol petroleum so yeah really cool little tip and this was from the pine tree which was not too far away hopefully you guys enjoyed that part I will now keep these and I can only you know once I've melted this down I can use a bit of it for glue and then I can remould it back on and just take this wherever I want with me so it's just really handy for the primitive glue things and it will deter mosquitoes I've been bitten quite a few times but when I was melting this down and it combusted I let it burn for a bit just to see what it was like and no mosquitoes around me no mosquitoes buzzing so that's what those are for they're getting the tinder bag right now the other thing is I have collected and gathered the trail camera the hunting camp now you remember those of you who watched when I came here a couple of times now for my solo overnighter and oh with dad for the Captain Kirk the other day we put a trail cam out because there is something out here in this woodland that is digging up right by the tree roots we don't know what it is yet but I mean it's plastered all over these pine trees at the base of the tree and it's very deep it's not a small mammal we're kind of hoping it's a wild boar because they have been reintroduced in the UK but they're very hard to see they're very hard to find I know they're common in some parts of the US and around the world but here in the in England especially they are very rare to see a certainly where I am south of England central south so I'm really hoping we pick up something unfortunate run out of battery because I've had this out here for three weeks now so yeah the batteries are dead there's gonna be stuff on here it certainly is gonna be some sort of wildlife on here but I am sort of hoping it's gonna be something like a big boar but we will see so what I'm gonna do is when the by the time this video goes up I would have already seen this the footage on here so what you're gonna see now is going to be clips from here of any animals that we've got fingers crossed guys here we go so first up we have a fox pretty sure this is a vixen but I don't think this is the animal responsible for digging the holes at the bottom of the trees nice to see nevertheless this is a fallow deer and I think it's a buck I'm not too sure from the angle but I'm pretty sure it is buck and they are fairly common in this wood and an interestingly this next clip you can see the male Roe deer there that's a buck chasing the female deer the dough which is quite odd for this time of year you can see the date is the 11th of May and their usual their mating routine usually is actually about mid-july to mid-august so it's quite unusual to see this and sadly guys that was the only footage that I caught on the camera and I think it's because the batteries ran out especially at this time four o'clock where the sunlight went on the camera and I think where it was dappled sunlight it actually ran the battery out which is unfortunate so as I haven't seen it you guys have just seen what was on there I still don't know who what's on here so I'm quite excited to find out what it is anyway but thanks so much for watching guys really appreciate it I've got quite a bit to do at camp still and the main thing I'm trying to thing called for camp update 1314 I've lost track of what camp up there is now 15 15 maybe is the roof I want to get a roof on here a kind of permanent roof but I'm gonna need your help so bear with me I'm going to pick the camera up and just give you a little whirl of the camp because it's gonna be a fairly difficult job and I'd like to get some of your feedback this is camp this is the roof the main minutes at our proof which I which is temporary it's got a Ridgeline going all the way along it from this big pine tree up to here which is a staple we've put in and there is a pulley just at the top there you can see that this is temporary now this is where I need your help guys because it's going to be quite tricky because what I've done is I've actually built the camp around fixed trees which was not clever idea but I did it years ago so we've got two silver birch trees big ones here which kind of grow up and get in the way a little bit and then we've got good ol mike built camp around a nice pine tree here which goes bang smack pretty much in the middle of the camp and then a monster pine tree here it's got spine which we've attached a ridgeline T so this is my issue I'd like to have a fixed roof and I'm thinking maybe carrying it on to the angle of this lean-to shelter up here because I could use this as one corner post and then a digger hole over there for another corner post that's what I'm thinking so it goes up like that so I've got my four corners cuz the hunting towers a corner then this is a corner and then this big tree is a corner that's what I'm thinking and maybe just a lean-to style roof coming out here so there's still lots of light because otherwise I'd get no filming if I seal it off completely I don't know because some of you is said about a tepee design maybe and I can't picture at the moment I just can't picture it say I'd appreciate your feedback guys put your thoughts in the comment section below and let me know what you think as I am interested and I want to crack on with camp update 15 really soon and hopefully you know get something going it's going to be a while before I'm back at camp though because I'm off to do some other type of videos now a bit more while camping traveling to a few different places and things like that so the channel is going to mix up a bit now with some different content and then I'll be back to camp soon to crack on with the roof thanks so much for watching this video guys I really appreciate it it's now 9:30 at night I'm not doing an overnighter here I've just come to crack on with some work and just fix a few things but I appreciate you watching if you still are thank you very much and don't forget to check out Squarespace the sponsor for this video they've really helped me out it helps my channel if you guys check out the link
