Off Grid Log Cabin: Recycled Pallet Wood Project - Roof Extension & Sink
Description
The Log Cabin Build continues. We use Recycled Pallet Wood to build a wood roof at the back of the off grid cabin in the wilderness. Being able to use recycled materials to make simple and cheap diy projects is a useful skill to have and it helps to save money. So far the Log Cabin itself was free to build. It is heated with the woodstove, which is great for the cold winter months where temperatures drop below freezing.
Although the Cabin looks might look like a shack on the outside, we've turned this primitive hut into a cosy tiny house on in the inside. With a rustic wood chair, folding table, raised bed as well as a woodstove and a book case. It also has candles, lanterns and other items that make it a one-man rustic cabin.
The day started out with me alone in the woods. I got the woodstove going and made a cup of fresh coffee to start the day. Dad then joined me and together we began building work on the wilderness homestead. We opened some more subscriber gifts and answered some of the questions that you guys have been asking us in previous pallet wood cabin episodes. I hope to spend more time at the cabin to practice primitive technology, wilderness and survival skills and learn more about living off the land and foraging for wild food.

well we've made more Paulo of progress guys here we have a little roof that's coming out from back of the cabin here got pallet wood support here another strip of color wood and the back of the side there and basically well we just put a load of pallets together nice and tight and then some you found some old roofing felt yeah yeah when possible guys doing roofing they had some leftover just ask them we're still trying to do everything on the cheap so obviously that's got the old roofing felt here it was pretty much almost falling apart
when we were putting it on but I'm gonna take the camera off now and just show you
that's awesome little sink design that he's done okay you see I've got this thing here this is a fiberglass one I'm not lumbering a huge porcelain one in that's been in my store for the best part of 20 years I don't know there's a caravan one or what it is this nice and light just mounted it for now on this bald I cut that one out home because it's circular just don't forget it's circular of these here so it's sort of make a template to get the bowl in there I put a support on the back here I've got some hinges clean them up here okay I know the rod screws but that's the idea of it support with the back so it's hinged so it actually goes up like this over here in the corner we've got a little okay even though what these hooks hook and clip so you can clip it up it's out of the way when you're not using it you just undo this piece of pipe as you can see though if you have the pipe there and lift it up you might you might catch it you might stagger soap on it but this way when you're not using it put that little hook in there that's done this I can just drop it down the side what I want to use it when I come out I just push that on to the end there no need to tape it permanently so I'm just gonna take a bit of water drainage I've got my tool and yards here which I can also use something solid like sink chain with us use a bit of leftover pull cord or something so it holds down nice and tight like this and then the water comes straight down put your bucket it's an old five-gallon bucket used to use fishing on my boat so for
that's gonna go in there and of course that water can be used elsewhere as I was walking a wife we taking their Mike's dog for a walk jacks and we round the countryside and I thought something glinting something glinting I was like a magpie I was straight on it and I said don't go in there just disgusting you're going in amongst the nettles but I've seen it Sparkle I clean it all up some poor chaps luster highly expensive cause looks like a wing mirror I guess of a van or something like that it's too big for Karthi but listen waist not one not guys jewel to holes in the top get old piece of wire didn't want to use anything like strings you might Rock and of course this is a convex one concave goes in convex goes out so distorts that's why they have them on vehicles because you can see everything here there's only one other thing to do now let's take the plunge this is the ultimate bushcraft ensuite think I'm roughing it cold in there first this is the test run you can see this covers probably about 3 liter that's straight off the stove that this with my pinky that's your pinky in case I'm not swearing anybody please please don't do D monetizes it's my little finger you two please don't do monetizes sad enough everything there we go the benefit is I've taken my glasses off I don't know what I'm shaving now the moustache could no could go no Sh oh yeah I tell you what it's my wife will be out here this lovely hot water this is a way to do it guys his campaign is go amping why is it when you get some wage when I was shaving in the morning like this all I see is my granddad's face in here you've always said that to me as I love you yeah I think I'm gonna start seeing EC I think I love it is that the old BIC one bladers this is one use yeah this one use dream on dream on guys I by packing at these are 99p okay at least a week have one and after yu5 you're pulling harder and harder and you go that's a nice rough cut yeah that's good that works all good we're gonna put more out here yeah no more today we've got more we're gonna have stuff out here as well if I want to clean my teeth I'll use yes luxury jam-jar that chap knee I supposed to live chutney flavor teeth ok well that guy's got some strange fillings in his teeth little brown it's got a little shelf isn't it yeah let's go do the shelf at the back no you put enough there this would be a boon for Mike or me yeah love us coming out here there of course guys you get the old baggages and you want to rinse out and check how low can you go in my case can be mighty you've saved us we've insulated the wounds now anyway I'm sorry listen what happens when I pull the plug out goes does it all work holy cow bad there was a gallon of beer so we've done all our jobs for today we're not cooking up anything because well we've got frankly I need to go back and edit this video to get it up for you guys but we've had some more mail through the post and some more gifts I've got one for dad actually subscribers made this one for you dad it's not Christmas yes and one for me here I have a feeling I already know what this is because this person has sent me stuff before and he's very very talented you do the honors of yours dad you don't know what it is it's always exciting me the eagerness of opening mail you don't like it ready dude you don't get much mail there could be a billion sorry yeah no it's bubble wrap to pop later on when I get really bored oh it's cool this is I'm going to call this I sported yeah smile fit spalted cook sir so mine usually has always complain mine's a bit too small to get any liquid in bar that looks like you can take a bit more it's got a nice pan and I know why this one is used by a fisherman because on the other side that pattern shows can you guys see that what suspiciously like a seagull it has the head wings after assault seems like to me Seco so thank you very much of that one that is from will Calum and dad he's his name is will yeah and it's a very very good woodworker I mean that's how neat is that how well is that car he hand-carved these by the way that's linseed oil I guess probably didn't see and you've got I think red deer antler toggles so there's four want to put in a mat in my hip yeah on the belt hips and things like that let's have a look at mine smell the glazing is gross or putty so you see this choice for uncle and wills made me this one pink different shape once or once I normally have that it's awesome much very different handling yeah much we have a simpler design with the handle yeah totally different handles we do the same job horse they do a double finger hold on that one and I might one here's got much more of a primeval grip I don't know what would mine is I love to ask well what type of wood - I'm pretty sure yours is spalted beat this is wills work guys if you are looking for wooden cooks is like this he's called white head custom crafts yeah so it all says about will and what he does and the reason for his the name of his his business and things so he's very very talented very talented you saw Mike who is a bit of a coffee holic how it is coffee this morning using that I use my little hand grinder the Hunt Brothers hand grinder that's always like an engine starting like that I brought from home something that myself my wife had from years ago this I don't even think you seen it a plastic bag plastic bag with yes a coffee grinder in it check it out lots of prezi's have opening today nice professor belongs to your mother don't even go there it looks very vintage without hand already so this is heavy cast I definitely hear his name on the front there it says Kendricks dick a Kendrick & Sons yeah patent coffee milk exactly and those eyes mainly really famous once the family have been going for like God knows how many generations so many numbers 1790s or something like that and this is all cast time around the outside so it's it does weigh a lot and then you got all this decorative brass where like sort of embossed around the base you've got a scoop to load your coffee beans of that in here that's brass a handle with this one they call an exotic wood handle leaves to come with yes there could be Rosewood could be mahogany something like that's amazing it could be fixed on the ground because it's got holes there you can also fit on the ground grain on the ground eating off the wrong butt to a table because obviously you get grinding you're gonna be moving it around and then you got a tray at the bottom here that pulls out when I'm done you're growing there I put a bit of silver foil in there cuz my it's gonna have a going well that's your gonna test this out he's gonna give it a test
so put a bit of silver paper and it's all we washed out so I've no idea what happens I don't really drink coffee myself I just get the odd couple two and then I beat a retreat hastily to the porcelaine bar it does no agree me anybody out there that doesn't agree with coffee I do hey I didn't have a cup of tea any topic just yes writing here this was a traditional English made coffee grinder they were made these ones in West Polish which is Staffordshire doesn't get much more English than Staffordshire this is say satisfied you've something that's over a hundred years old
well no and still worse I think we said 200 where is that the companies and come he's been going for 225 years we're done shall we see the contents let's see this works oh look at see what are some really good grooming
I thought by looking at boobies really yeah I thought it'd be so coarse looking at the gears in there but that is such a fine that's unbelievable that is unbelievable the smell I'm not a coffee drinker but arse amazing something else hundred euro coffee you really will be in the toilet I'll be racing all right let's get the water in let's get that in here first I can't behave er that how fine that is you make a now some water love this stove thing it's great isn't it oh oh yeah I do that was hot it's not boiling because it's so metal matter should be like a sauna in here yeah we need to do the aromas all about the aromas that is it what it's about trapping the aroma seem like that for about four or five five minutes probably for five minutes I just so there's the spout here oh is it that's in French yes yeah that's a spout that lets the air out here it filters it as you the filters there that's obviously the filter that French press they it's like a reverse filter a filter you'd normally pour water down through the coffee and it filters through either the paper or a actual filter and you get the liquid at the bottom a French press is basically the reverse so you're pushing this down and it pushes all the put the coffee grinds down yeah and lets the filtered coffee come up the literally drinkable liquid come up clever but I like to reverse that so it's all sealed now it's completely sealing it just traps the aromas in it and I usually do that for about five minutes suits like that yeah I let it sit for five minutes and then all those coffee grinds where poured it in will sink to the bottom more because as I poured that water they splashed all up here they're all up high yeah so lets them all sink to the bottom and then you push the spin around push it down
and you're good to go that was awesome really impressive so we wait five minutes
and the key is well I sometimes well obviously I've got to spin the spout round so it's level with the other spout there and the key is to push down nice and slow really slowly there you go you can see it pushing the sediment down you can actually see there I say sediment the coffee grounds you can see it pushing them down and there's a slight change in coloration of the coffee itself where the filtered coffee has now coming through and by pushing it slowly you just don't allow as many coffee grounds to come through and that it's perfect
so cooks a time get our wheels cooks our dad you've got an absolute bucket how much do you want well listen what he does to mine so I shall be very careful about you give me okay say hey gay and pouring it slowly as well as in this clear it's like golden yeah that's why they call it woodsman's gold they go I'll give you that cuz I know you don't want those yep and I understand I'm taking this with no sugar yeah and no milk no alright this is how serious coffee drinkers take it oh you got to have it black so we can safely say that whales cook sirs do not leak which is the main thing but look at that that is awesome now that would probably be too hot to drink that just yet so we'll wait a bit I'm a coffee connoisseur guys this is just how I like to do my coffee obviously it people out there like it done differently this is just what I like and what I enjoy with my coffee but that is one wonderful cook sir bye we'll still a bit hot well that's good is he good oh that's really good it smells good folks I have to say it does smell like a coffee shop in here it's so nice do you know that that handle is surprisingly economic age is very basic comfortable in my hand what's yours I'm not gonna drink I know yours is Guinness oh yeah your turn dad I was three actually tastes like coffee it's good isn't it that's proper coffee I want sugar in it I would definitely want five or six pounds of sugar it's a milk in half a cow is you think very tasty but I am a true Englishman and I will stick with my tea well guys I'm still I'm still laughter dad hold on you're talking to the like a vasila well that's the coffee gone down this hoby stays down but we've been doing other jobs as well as making their ensuite bathroom outside I've made here a piece of window shutter if you like we can't really use shutters on the outside a lot of guys have commented Avenue yeah they say blue shutters on the outside there's no need we're in a woodland we're sheltered we have big stalls we've had for those people who say that won't last two days it's gonna rot and fall down well it's been here in a sixty and an 80 mile an hour still we had two storms come through and he's still standing don't worry about it but the idea one guy came up other comments was hinge it like this which I've done here with a hinge system on a top I'll use a piece of hardboard I've got a little sliding close stop there so we can't put curtains there again somebody's head could be a fire hazard with the cameras yeah agreed
yeah idea what about this so people folds down like that but just because he buddy says what's that funny stain is fence stain and that I could show you there this pattern was told me by my grandfather they use years ago and it's called scrambling is there anybody out there from England who knows what scrambling is you do that with the paintbrush while it's still wet and there you can see the pattern dries you can do other pants as well really neat it's called scrambling and it just breaks out rather than just having a straight Brown so there you go nobody's going to be peeping through here anytime soon I look how much the night comes up throw it up no I think it's easier than curtains it easier job done now somebody local take to some of the other comments we had will be first put this stove in here you need to get it higher so you don't bend down low I've taken that into consideration brought it up six inches using good old pallet wood also they said put some metal round it and I thought I thought about metal but I know I have got left over because the object is hole build other than stoves obviously they're not spend easy to save money or not spend anything which we have done at the moment so I've used here flooring tiles I had left over from wonder property jobs so I put throwing tiles cut them with a you know proper tile cutter got a tile cutter got all the tools cut the tiles stuck them on there cut them to the right size exactly I've made it so it's exactly to the edge of this width of the pallet we reuse so it's not sticking out too far made of a let's just full obviously these to go and up here whether I do put another tile behind this when we use you having a lot I don't know but there you go if you want to know how I made this this is how I did it [Music]
and Mike's already from his overnight fees put his tools up here - try Eddie's a scraping he's ash paper so they're up there it really is a perfect one-man cabin so earlier this morning you saw me putting up a shelf well two shelves I've got one shelf there and one over to the above the bed also added the badger skull up here which is really significant for this cabin because I say the longer-term subscribers those of you who watched us on this site previously we just had it as a small kind of Bush crafty site where we were just building a little camp before we had the idea for this cabin and dad actually found a badger skull while we were cleaning an area for the camp and we asked you guys as subscribers to name the camp and eventually that one guy I got the top comment as calling it badgers rest you know the final resting place of the badger because of the badger skull and there's a big badger set over here as well so in sort of we felt honored to do it didn't we we got we we thought we had to put this up here so we've put the badgers go up here just you know for sentimental reasons really and then over here just some Joe likes getting some more battery these are just battery ones here but got them on Amazon by the way guys so if you want the aesthetics lights like this these are we had these nearly six months ago now my wife Amy brought them for our wedding and we use these are our wedding loads of these we've got quite a few so I've got more to bring in there but they're just like decorative rustic candle drop well jar lights really not too expensive as well when I got them on Amazon I'll pop a link in the video description below if you guys are interested in those so just to address a few questions that we've had in the comment section over the past few weeks this whole entire cabin really is built from recycled or reclaimed pallet wood where we've gone to industrial estates supermarkets things like that and we have asked permission we've not just taken another pass stolen them we've asked the supermarket or the Industrial Estate business whatever was there for permission we stripped the pallets down and
so one if you watch the whole series of this build go back to Episode one on top a playlist link in the video description below but we started from scratch we stripped the palettes down we built the foundation on the floor obviously they've got the walls up then we did the door now the roof is made of tin
and the roof gutters you want to call them their channel they're what the channels are on the wrong way we know we did say that in Episode three maybe we couldn't order it wait yeah the reason is is that we're trying to spend basically as little money as possible we've recycled nails where we have where we can loads of stuff is recycled or stuff that we've had in our garage or storage so that's the whole point we're trying to save money which is why we left this tin roof as it is because if we turned it round and cut it each sideways so that they their channels did run the right way yeah then we would run out of material and we've run out of roofing material and guys it's dry in here and we've had so much rain it's England we are dry it works we're not going to change it the other question we get is is this on public land no this is not on public land I'm not sure that would be legal doing it on public land we were on family owned private land where we have permission to do this it's the same with my big camp not a question I get a lot of questions about that haven't just gone out into public woodland that son ain't got all complete permission to do it so the other question we get is I've obviously done an overnighter and here plan to do a lot more why isn't that in the overnighters and why isn't there a bunk bed for so that you can both stay here because at the end of the day if you stripped all of what we're doing down the whole purpose of this is not to build a perfect cabin is from for us to spend time together it's a father-son project that's all it is if it rots in two years time with three years time we don't care do we and we've build another way we've accepted that we're okay with that because the whole point of this is just to spend time together that's all it is it's just an excuse to spend time together it's a fun project there's no serious carpentry stuff involved that's yeah we're not professionals we don't care if he doesn't rather be don't mind if things are wrong this is the way it is so hopefully that clears none up for you but the bunk bed situation is we've we thought about it yeah there's gonna be no room to put a bunk bed on here either the person on the floor is gonna get no room above him or the pies on the top is just gonna be too near the top yeah we went too close to the roof you probably could have done it guys but the intention was to make a one man it's one man can you say one man cabin and for that reason known as a one man cabin we actually do came up the idea of raising this bed up yeah if we didn't raise the bed up you should have one on the bottom then you could have a bunk bed up here but then we'd lose all that space where my pussy's rucksacks and everything I don't think that camera go as well yeah all the camera gear has to go under the bed as well so you know you need to maximize the space and I feel to be honest with it there's two of us and yeah no problem we cook in here eaten or any of space just I won't be sleeping in it yeah unless I'm on my own so hopefully that's answered some of your questions if you have any more questions do you feel free to pop them in the comment section we really do read them I know began over a thousand now almost on each video but we really do read the comments and like ideas like the shuttle board we've got from subscribers exactly yes so raise it raising the height of the yes something so randomly soup if you think simple when I'm looking at the films out there I think yeah that guy's right right laying right down pieces of wooden yeah just bring it up six inches we bring it up it's so much easier yes so we really appreciate you in comments and all your feedback this is I think episode eight now we have plans to build more we do not more cabins we've got yeah we we've got plans to add more to the cabin pala wood projects and everything like that so do keep an eye out and hit the subscribe button if you're interested in you're enjoying the mini absolutely and remember to take the little bell as well so that you get notified when we do upload a video but also send us through your suggestions of any ideas that we can do any recycled projects any sort of pallet wood projects we're always you know open to suggestions yep lastly do not forget if you have any remote draw towards the water
not the water out in the sink the water rivers and lakes and you want to go fishing and see go across and see Andy go across to totally awesome warfare a fishy IOT a fishing yeah a fishing there's loads of films on there and a lot of guys go camping bushcraft and outdoors and they're all linked to fishing really at the end of the day sooner or later you're going to want to go fishing there might be a few tips that we can give you in them yeah that's that's that's YouTube channel and ta fishing really really good for realistic basic fishing tips that will begin us that will help you catch fish also really great for kids who get a lot of dads and mums comment on the videos saying how much it's helped them teach their kids how to fish I mean that is to me well because it easily yeah the best fishermen I've ever seen or night you know there's nothing I don't think I've there's no fish he's not caught really it might run in must be some way above them found it it's crazy I mean you've had some incredible fishing so yeah for those of you how many years of experience of fishing 16 years makes the area a start even normally about eight or nine or ten because listen quest how hard to believe you people out there there were no mobile phones when I was born we barely had a black-and-white television can you imagine this generation now yes crazy no color television I mean how long we lost we had nothing to do do you what we do listen to the radio or we would go outside and play in the woods so for me this is just like childhood I know a lot of you guys have commented the older guys um yeah yeah they use their so pleased to see it because you're getting in the outdoors and sort of playing and basically I'm fairly childish anyway I'm out doing my childhood I'm really I'm reliving my childhood that's what that's the point of it all isn't at the end of the day it's just it's enjoying the outdoors and we hope that by this channel you're inspired to go outside and enjoy the outdoors you know doesn't have to be with your dad could be with anyone grains raise their family friends it doesn't matter just get out there but thanks guys so much for watching this episode we really appreciate it we've got good plans for the next one so stick around and we'll see you soon and the coffee start to move boys I think Tom on the go you
