Catch n Cook - Spit Roast TIGER TROUT at The Bushcraft Camp
Description
In this Bushcraft & Fishing video I head to the Camp with Dad and we spit roast a Fish on the Campfire. Graeme caught the fish when fly fishing a small creek. We go through the fishing tackle and gear and how to catch trout on both fly and spinners. Graeme also shows you how to use a splitting axe to split wood for our Bug Out Camp ready for the cold winter. At the end of the video we squeeze in some theory time too!

well guys join me here out in the woods today and I've just been carving up a bit of beach this is screen wood because we're making a spit I'm here with dad and we are going to spit roast a trout and not any sort of ordinary species of trout this is quite a unique species and I'm just going to show you some footage now of how dad caught this trout earlier in the week they've also got here a small like a tributary a section of the chalk stream which I have fished before and had some good fish our lastly there's a there's a fish town the oh my god is to fish down the hang on a minute boys hang on a minute there's fish all over this one this dream can you see that without you see them I got polarizing glasses but there that's one over there I guess it gonna spook upstream and just toss it as lightly as I can and then just sort of jiggle it and twitch it all the way back oh my god get to go out of here what a beauty I met in a river that's the first tiger trailer that ever call out the river my goodness me that was impressive look at the big koi pond him he's going to get dispatched and I've got a feeling he's gonna go to Mike's Bush Guelph camp so there you go guys auntie our outdoors at first we're gonna catch and cook a tiger trout so what we've done is I got the fire going using the log cabin fire method which for regular subscribers you would have seen us doing a video recently it just means that this is a small maintenance fire you don't have to do much to it because you've built it up and it burns down and gives you a really good better coals so the idea is that set up two y-shaped all v-shape sticks either side of the fire pit I've got the piece of beech here which I was getting stripping off the bark because you don't want to put the leave the bark on because it will taint the taste of the fish so stripped off the bark put a point on it which is going to go through the fish's mouth and we've actually left this twig which is kind of protruding from the branch as a handle to rotate the spit so it will be like this and we practically tested it and that way we can slowly rotate it once the fish is on there obviously this is too much flame at the moment to cook so while that flame is burning down and getting us the coals we're gonna get the fish on the stick well this is the unusual tiger trout being in the freezer and it's been gutted and killed by the fishery guy there so it's all ready to go on the spit and we're gonna try and get it on there if we can so I've gone through the jaws kind of work the stick right through the back twisting it because long as you remove the stomach cavity and we're just going to come out the tail layer and I'm gonna split that watch your fingers if you ever do this guys
now that's through hopefully fair it's going to go all the way through and there you go one target route home free ready for the old fire I'm just gonna push a stick through the body cavity and out the other side just to keep it held together while we're actually rotating it on the spit like that and you've got a bit of support in there in the stomach cavity as it cooks it will start to possibly break up you know you can tell it all it's all cooked me I guys you can peel the skin off there just falls off just falls off yeah smells amazing and there is if I could peel that skin back loads of meat there kind of having target route yep pig pork chow pong trap there we go boys nice white caught by our own heads well fly different taste in their differences rainbows are only sort of dry taste room so here you can see this is a male fish but you can tell it's got a Kuip it's just time to see the formation of that type it's a hook on the bottom end of the jaw which they get in salmon as well also managed to get it it's when they thought of getting ready for spawning about they tend to grow this coat and they say for fighting but this one we've noticed which I had been told before the tiger trout has absolutely Tiger teeth compared with the winter teeth on it paired with rainbows they got real spikes down there good protein in this guy's lots of protein yep catch and cook your own fish well we actually had it some problems with this on the spit to be honest guys because it was it was fine to begin with but as it cooked the meat got softer and we found it started to slip really even with that support stick going through the cavity but who knows he was saying there's not there wasn't much meat for it see where the guy cleaned it I think he took he split them he split the gut too far back so didn't get give us much meat so I've learnt them assemble we do another spit roast would you probably will yeah just take the guts out barely you know so you get them out so you got some more meat to get your spite you know your spit right through well some of you may recognize our Tiki kitchen from Camp Update 12 which has just recently gone up in the channel be sure to check out that video if you haven't watched it already and also there's a whole playlist of all 12 episodes I've put them into a playlist of building this camp on how I built this camp each time I've come up that I've added something new so if you want to watch the full camp build process as such there's a link in the video description below and you can just watch from episode 1 onwards - thanks very much everyone who watched that video really appreciate it so we've got things coming up we've got some theory time which those older subscribers will know we haven't done for a long time where we talk about a wacky theory out there and well we just get your feedback on what your opinions are on the V bat and we love seeing your comments on that so we've got theory time coming I've got some subscriber gifts that I've had through the PA box which I'm gonna show you guys but before that I haven't had one before that we are gonna do a battle and it's gonna be a battle of the kettle versus the Billy because that hates reusing why do you hate using the because there's not enough water in it for two people which are one person will such a half a cup of tea
an Englishman cannot survive on half a cup of tea it's a 10 centimeters every Billy there's plenty of room I've always done 2 teas in it before but he's hated it cause it's always been like the scrimps and the dregs of the last bit I feel cheated so I put my own kettle which is blackened from fires and it also tells me it's electronic it tells me when the steam is ready it's got a whistle right so we're gonna fill them up to not fool yours probably cuz I bought a couple couple and then we gonna see which one boils first so lately we've been doing a log cabin fire setup or a box fire it's called different names but we call it a log cabin fire setup we've been doing it a lot more here recently because in this camp where was where I've got all these walls there's almost no airflow there's very very little airflow and what is
men is that when we put wood like this straight onto the fire there's nothing to help get catch this wooden light there's no oxygen there's no airflow to catch it alight so by doing this log cabin fire setup you can see gaps in between the wood of about a couple of inches and that what that does is that allows the air and any type of draught to just be drawn in through that those gaps and then it kind of sucks through the wood so it's almost like a wood gas burner if you imagine like there's wood gas stoves it's kind of got that effect where that air is drawn through and then it the heat and the convection makes it burn even better so it's also very good for a smokeless fire so even when you go down to the embassy just build it back up again in that box formation that log cabin formation and you should find that you get very little smoke it's very little maintenance and it just you know it gives you to give better coals straight away so what we've got is the Billy and the actual kettle really I shouldn't put this on the fire just she actually let that burn down but we're just gonna put them to the side for the moment just to get warm see which one boils first

nice puffy village dear I owe you for you did you put yourself in the look that's cool being senior party you'll absolutely jinx it there's going now it's so hot no I can't pick it off one nil no rematch hot cup of tea you can't beat it
yeah that's why I call a full cup of tea old school wins again sorry plastic plastic plastic less plastic wood so in that video you saw that catch that trout that's fly fishing was no couldn't you probably don't remember what type of fly what type of fly was it in buzzer there would've been a name a weighted nymph in a river cost an upstream so there's no different ways you can catch trout well here in the UK and around the world one of the ways we found is really affected our cheese on these little pen rods they're called pen fishing rods these are great little survival tool they're literally like a pen I'll pop a link in the video description for you guys and they extend out to about a meter meter they come in a full kit so the pen the rod and the reel and the reel and like we change the line they don't we it's not amazing but they are actually pretty powerful you just don't want to get them too acute the angle cuz they do snap they're cheap but they're really handy the sort of portable nurse and it packs down to absolutely nothing really so it's great for a lightweight backpacking fishing trip but you've got the lures there other techniques we've got fish over 10 pounds on that on those Palmers payrolls yeah they want out on our show you can see them on the out on the fishing show that one season watch outdoors and you want to go across to the fishing show television show there will be pen draw challenges out there yeah I've got here this is all you need look yeah a little Tupperware box you can get a tackle box so that rod and reel in your backpack somewhere and that will give you everything you need to have a go at trout if you're out in the wild on rivers maybe in lakes check all your rules and regulations and some allow spinners some don't is that what you've got in there mixture of spinach flies jigs are gonna show them to you yeah so in this little box what I've got it's a variety of jigs rigs look that's just a little pill box or camera cannister now let's run through some this tiny little rubber thing with a hook you say lure it's got a jig head there and it's got a spinner blade here you tie the fishing line on there let's take my fingers that's camping boys and you just jig that through the water they see this and they see the flash they see the flash first here revolving and they come up beyond the back and grab that thing this little fish this one here I'll get him out with never been used it's the only one I've got to show you at the moment now that that shape is called a spoon and it wobbles it's a wobbling spoon it goes from the copper color to the silver flashes back with the Fords these sizes are absolutely ideal for trail and this little chappy is what I would use for trout the size of that tiger trail anything else about say from half a pound to three pounds which is what you want at survival situations now these you can put hooks on let's show you one that has a hook on it ready the weights already in here it's got a little single hook there and this is called a spinner for those who don't know because ironically as it bites a water and you cast out and wind it back or the river current gets ahold of it it spins now these are metal ones so they've got a bit of weight to them but you can also use small jigs and look at that one in fact that should be on our barbie mine it should be your air spit Captain Kirk catching cooked plastic crayfish now that I assume it's an imitation of the red American red signal crayfish because for the Red Claws it's got on it I think they call in coral fish sauce crawdad still down there Corphish yeah so hooks in there and if you just look up in there there's the eye that you tie it onto but of course that's just rubber that's gonna be slow sinking so you're gonna need some weights you can get yourself in a tackle shop anywhere one of these little boxes don't have to be this box it's just what I've got but look I can put in there all my leg weights to make them sink I've got spare hooks small hooks big hooks and of course they all snap together he says that surrounding that site don't get lost you can get miniature ones like this leave the baby ones just don't forget these breed I like it baby once and the trout know that now what I was doing with fly-fishing and now there you can see there's the hook that's the length of the hook there this one as a long marabou tail to it move that check back so these are used casting with a fly rod that's as always fishing these are not weighted nymphs but they are various types of trout flies you can also fish those a lot of people don't know it but you can fish those not a su with a fly word but with that pin rod and those lead weights in there and then finally you can get what's called these we used to kick bone fish on these called a wig wag minnow all it is is a if I probably won't get this one off because it's been on this alone but you can see you thread it up the grub and the tail of these they come like that just wiggle through the water now those are absolutely ideal trout size ideal so there are several different methods you've got spoons you got jigs you got imitation rubber lures you're spinners it's all there great good fun and it all goes just in one box and so I just wanted to talk to you briefly about a gift that's people have sent me to a couple of subscribers have send me some gifts but the first thing is actually from a friend of mine called Brian and he makes custom bushcraft gear not just custom gear general bushcraft kind of leather making and waxed canvas items as well and he runs a small business called journeyman journeyman handcraft and I'll pop a link in the video description below to his Etsy shop his kind of online store he's also he got an Instagram page as well which I'll post to and you can see some of the stuff he makes but he recently made this this is my who's commander hatchet hobby my favorite hatchet I lost my leather sheath to the top of it and I said to Brian can you you know can you make me a leather sheath for it and he said sure just send me some pictures and I thought I'd have to send my axe but actually he made this leather sheath by photos and measurements only so this is what he's done and this is from like I say the photos that I sent he asked for measurements of different areas of the axe head and it's lovely lovely sheath where he's got little brass rivets they're keeping it all secure and a nice pop pop rivet or pop catch there and it's all custom made for this hatchet and he went by just literally by photo so if you guys are looking for a custom-made axe sheath I would definitely hit up Brian if you want to speak to him about getting custom made and not just that I'll show you what else he's made me so as well as this leather sheath he also made me a matching leather belt which is cut again custom made on my waist size which is quite nice brass buckle there and here he's got the dangler loop for the axe with actually I asked him for a compass stamp he stamped on a compass logo there which you can't really see probably on the camera but yeah that just slots in like that my axe and now I could walk around freely and my axe stays on my hip and it's just handy if I have stuff I need to do or things I need to carry I can carry them and still have my hatchet here and then I can pull it out of that loop obviously undo the sheath and then I'm ready to work when I'm ready to put it away put the sheet back on and it's handy that loop is just always there on the belt it's not it back in it's kind of like a carpenter's belt where you've got that B and then I'm off and it's all custom made leather items so I've also got some subscribing subscriber gifts that have been sent to me by the P o box the CAA outdoors PA box if you want to send me stuff there is a link in the video description to my P o box first off I've had this for ages and I'm really sorry I haven't opened this has showed it to the camera it does say opened an error on it so I apologize for that but this is from a girl called Kate Kalyn strain and she is from America I believe in Kalyn sent me this sticker you guys can see that you won't be able to read it when she's done little drawings of a campfire flower a little cat and she says it says streams and stuff meow and on the back it says a little color for your sticker board Kalyn so thanks so much Kaylee and I really appreciate it I hope you enjoying the videos the other thing from another subscriber he's written me a fairly lengthy letter which I won't read out the whole thing but it's from Peter will you and Peter says about my drip stick fail on the hammock video that I did a while ago where I was trying out a new method using sticks in between my hammock webbing straps that tree huggers to basically see if the water would drip down them but actually it made they basically snaps they couldn't take the pressure
but he's send me some nice buckles to sort out that issue for me so I really appreciate that thank you very much and he's also sent me some tweezers to get some sort of flat tweezers to go in my first-aid kit so thank you so much for that and these are really like these and some alcohol wipes as well these I've never seen before these glow-in-the-dark they're called polymath products and it's a glows it it's like an atom light so you just literally these little if you can see that in there you add them to your zip and they glow in the dark I believe so you can find zips and things on tents and sleeping bags and all that sort of stuff so I thought that was a really clever little ever look like them so Peter thanks so much for that and Caitlin thank you very much as well I really appreciate it we did have a question in one of the emails they said about my log splitter I just called it a log splitting X and actually a lot people said ask called a maul ma UL I don't know why but that's what it's called I thought they'd ask me how much it weighs I don't know it's heavy that's why it splits great big logs it weighs I put in my fishing scales 8 pounds 12 ounces that's the whole kit all right but you don't need to go mad with it you could just get the weight of it going and the momentum of that huge end ax head should go through even this one
you see there are use hardly any momentum at all it's the weight of that head doesn't work for you of course you would not want this puppy in your knapsack this is a fixed base camp and we need quite a bit of wood so great tool but pretty heavy well we are right towards the end of the video we appreciate it if you're still sticking around guys thanks very much for watching and traditionally we used to do what's called theory time so we're going to throw that back into the video now and give you a theory time but recently before we do this we just uploaded a video on ta fishing dad's channel or other YouTube channel about big cats in the UK now I know you've got them you know around America and Canada and things like that but we don't usually have them here they were released really into the wild people one-stage because of law changes to stuff yeah so it's a huge controversial topic of wild big cats we're not talking domestic cats like wild big computers yeah leopards yeah at Scotland and Wales there's been loads of sightings and things but we dad went to interview someone interviewed a naturalist yeah yeah uncle Jonathan who studied them for 30 years and we put the film up Man Alive the comments when crackers on it was not because so many people just don't believe it but you want to check out the comments page there's a lot a lot of people that say they have seen a Puma a mountain lion or cougar I mean here in the UK which is very okay now they can't all be wrong yet on all beer on can they but of course getting a picture is the well I mean that's the icing on the cake isn't it so you can never prove anything but they are definitely there is something out there this guy's got poor prints footprints there's been recent deer kill that's been really strange danda bones have been bitten clean in half that couldn't have been done by dog so it's out there so what we want to know is this is the theory time now theory totally ultimate theory time is sasquatch real that's the theory time of any of you are they having seen anything like sasquatch yet Squatch Squidward's so
sounds like a vegetable exactly yeti-yeti-yeti-yeti most people over here probably in the UK we call it the Yeti but I know it's Sasquatch paper where well the US and things like that but it's a huge controversial topic guys exactly what do you think is it real is it not have you seen it if you have is there any photo evidence I bet there isn't that's the thing as other people out there that have seen something that they cannot describe we're serious guys we've got this here in the UK controversial stuff about do these pyramids do these mountain lions even a leopard I heard they escaped they say they're breeding and they're hybridizing now we don't know we're just interviewing the people aren't we you're not here from you yeah and let us know guys thanks so much for watching the video we really appreciate it we hope you enjoyed that Captain Kirk of the tiger trout which was really unique trout I mean if you saw the colors on it was amazing wasn't it it wasn't a quarter yeah beautiful colors that's why they call it the tiger trout below in the video description I've popped about two three maybe even four catch and cook videos if you enjoyed this there's four more you can watch in the show more section below this video when your if you are subscribed to the channel we really appreciate it thank you if you enjoyed the video do give it a thumbs up if you're not if you are subscribed and you're not getting email notifications I've had a lot of people lately say they're not getting an email notification there's a little Bell icon that you need to click next to this word subscribe next to my channel there's a bell if you click that and then tick the box that says send all notifications from this channel or something like that then you guys get the email whenever we upload a video thanks so much for watching we will see you soon we're going to head out the sun's about to set we'll see you soon in another video [Music]
