Building an Off Grid Cabin in the Forest using Free Pallet Wood - A Wilderness Project

Description

This is the first video in a series with my Dad where we are building an off-grid one man wood cabin from reclaimed Pallet Wood that we scavenged for free. In the first episode, we show you the site that we have chosen in the woods and the type of land that we are building the cabin on.

The first stage of the primitive cabin build was to collect the pallets and break them down to gain useable pieces of timber. We have no saw mill, so we need to do this stage ourselves. We then began to put together the foundations for the cabin and create a wood base for the cabin to stand on.

This cabin is located at one of our Bushcraft Camp sites. So after a hard days work we got the fire going and cooked up some food on the cast iron grill.

I hope you guys enjoy this cabin build series. It gives me a great chance to spend time with my Dad on this wilderness project together. Hope you enjoy coming along on the adventure!

hi guys welcome to ta outdoors thanks very much for clicking on this video this is a kind of brand new miniseries that we're gonna do and what well it's a project read it's a father-and-son project so I'm here with my dad and what we're gonna build dad we're gonna be building a one-man wood cabin but way for this out of reclaimed pallet wood no trees being chopped down even down to if we can get some other nails out and use it again and it's gonna be totally free guys dad's collected these where can you collect pallet wood from just dust real estates mostly you get some good wolf and industrial estate look just ask you can ask around the back supermarket livery your areas you know but industrial areas I find are quite good for them so we're in a deciduous woodland here what we've done if you can see behind us is we've cleared the area of leaves because we're at the back end of autumn coming into early winter we need to get this cabin up nice and quick before the rains coming because we are over here in England and there's plenty of rain now we've had to carry all this timber everything we want in here because this is a deciduous just an ancient forest we don't have a huge forest here and we certainly don't have access to any sawmills so we've had to use this timber but the worse we've had to carry it all the way in here and there's a lot of it and we've processed that we processed it all out obviously we've broken the pallet start stripping in dad's garage and that's taken hours really hasn't it but guys it's free and it's a great project [Music]

first thing we need to do now though is to get the base down for the cabin okay so the access area here you got to find the space and we do want to cut loads of trees down to make it we don't want it right in the middle of the camp we've already made here at Badgers dress so this area we've measured up should take a very small one-man cabin but what I want to do is limit it on light here so I got myself a compass this is one of my boat ones

it's a bearing one you look in case anybody wants to know you look through the eyepiece here just like that and it has a hair wire and you look across the hair wire and then look down onto the actual degrees north south east west and the degrees it's given you and that's point again that tells you as I say what you know what the direction is so I'm looking for he says British glasses on a no because we do photography down here roughly where south is effect I'm wrong I had South down there and South is folks over there so from having found where south is obvious Sun rises in the East sets in the west this is gonna be the area that give us most light we field even through the trees hopefully we can find a way okay in some form of window a small window to get a bit of light inside the cabin because obviously make all wood is gonna be pretty dark um this area I know is good so I figure that bat goes here maybe the door goes here so we're overlooking where the fire is you can walk to the fire pretty easily and just basically get the base down and maybe put in the window on this right-hand side so if that's south in the afternoon in the morning in the evening we get that sunlight coming through the window [Applause]

[Applause]

well you might not be able to tell guys but it's starting to get a bit dark now we've started to put the floor down as you can see behind us we made a start but it's getting dark so we're gonna switch the camera off try and finish the floor if we can't you'll see it in the next episode well we did that you come here a few days ago and brought some wood with us so we're just going to show you now some footage of what we've built we're here at badges rest bushcraft camp our other camp that we are slowly building and I'm here with dad and what is it late awesome now that isn't it late autumn all the leaves are down really pretty but love like a mess and what we're gonna do is build it so if we hope I proper tables but of course we don't have a sawmill in there so we've had two lumber all the lumber in we go we're not going so push crusty on this one in this camp we're gonna use nails and things like that but we're still gonna build stuff I've stripped down I've stripped down pallet wood so we've we've not actually bought any wood we've not damaged any trees and that's what we got a load of pallet wood and we're gonna use that with a ball on the table a couple of twists we got on hopefully making it stay out [Applause]

so my idea what we're gonna do we're gonna put these four or five inch boards across the top like this across the boards over here but just put an overlap edge right around here and then these crossfire Lakes will lodge up inside there and stop these skidding away and they can be nailed in and these could be nailed into there but the most important thing here is we've got to put in that stretcher across there and I feel that should just about make a doable table [Laughter]

well guys we're back here this is day two and it's actually a completely different weather at the moment it's about seven degrees so it's a lot colder it was double figures last time we came and yesterday we built the table and a little bench on top of the stools and this time you could probably see down in the background we've brought some more wood with us cuz we've got another project that we're gonna build but we're not gonna tell you what it is hope you enjoy it
