One-Man Off Grid Cabin using Free Recycled Pallet Wood - Roof & Front Porch Build
Description
The Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin build in the Forest continues. The aim of this wilderness project is to try and build a one man off-grid tiny house using free reclaimed pallet wood. The first stage of the build was to create a wood based platform or foundations for the cabin. We then built the side walls and frame for the cabin.
This episode focuses on the cabin roof and how we went about building the roof. Unfortunately we only had two pieces of tin sheet for the roof, which mean that the roof is technically on the wrong way around. But it's ok as this cabin build is more about me spending time with my dad. We then began work on building a front porch using planks of pallet wood. All of the timber is reclaimed for free.
We also cook up some fresh fish on the cast iron grill and campfire at The Bushcraft Camp. Thanks to everyone who watched the previous two episodes of this primitive cabin build.

previously on the pallet wood cabin bill we finished the wood flooring which formed the base for the cabin now that the base was complete we raised it up onto the roof tiles and placed it on a layer of DPC to prevent the damp ground from rotting the wood base each time we went to the forest we carried more pallet wood in with us with the base finished it was time to focus on the side walls and the main frame of the cabin in order to get the side walls long enough we had to join pieces of pallet wood together the slats for the walls of the cabin were then put together and overlapped so that the rain would run off the wood once each side was built we then joined them together to form the walls of the cabin as evening drew closer we decided to join all of the walls together with some temporary brackets join us now for episode 3 where we aim to put the roof on the cabin begin to make the porch and install the window [Applause]

yeah
so you might have seen us put what four slats up there we've put force nuts up and we've had a choice of roofing material so we could have done your standard sort of shed roof which is what bit plywood or wrote just well you know Jerry poops how you apply marine ply over over the top of it and then felt it you'd have to felt it you couldn't even caressed it if you wanted to and then tack the canvas here on tiles you could have gone like a house done tiles yeah a lot more rafters in there most members and then you support the tires you get American Canada I think you guys would shingles and they yeah shingles we have lots of choices but we're trying to sort of make this out of recycled materials you know as in when trying not to buy it we try not to buy in any material we haven't we actually haven't yet so far we've not spent any money we've recycled now is everything and dad's actually got some what we're going to show you in a minute what is it is you sitting they use on just farms which you guys I know we're in a skip at a ghost thrown away I thought heat those have had them ten years water could you already in throw away the only problem being normally the ridges run this way well I've only got two sheets and he fits going that way long ways so which we're gonna go what we got that's the only choice we got we can't afford to cut it we won't have enough and then we have to go and buy and the object of the exercise is here to get something grow and not spend money I just Timmy's tins let's get out there please lord I hope it fits [Music]
[Music]
sorry guys we just put the roof on we've not secured it down properly have we we've secured bolts off we've got a lot more screws to go in there yeah so you can see in the background you can just about see it yes we're quite pleased with it the metal it's it sort of blends in quite well it's quite good it's really rich is it yeah so we did have a little bit of a break good have some downtime but we got to push on also because of the weather you know it's gonna come in very very cold yeah so we're gonna try the porch we level the ground a bit and we've been nailing away over here just using the game big pallets we managed to get a couple of big pallets of industrial estate yeah there's these like long ones they're double the length of a normal pallet I'm not sure what they'll be useful like what type of boots they would have been shipping but heavy that's heavy King so look for their non pallets here stonemasons know people are dealing bricks tiles maybe tiles anything with weight some tile shop or Android that's real estate and definitely engineering mikesh we found this in the ward rusting away or cleaned it all up it's getting rusty again wow that is hot we don't know the name of it it's cast iron maybe you guys know yeah maybe you guys know what this is called but what we've done there does one handle missing so on this side so you can pick it up when it's cold obviously take it off carry it around that was missing so I've made that out coat hanger wire and this center piece at rest in there because you can already have the fire going through the middle I'll just cut piece of grill just metal grill just to lay on the top so we can put our kettles on top and of course you can cook stuff around the edge oh I can it'll be brilliant for cooking because you can keep stuff warm in there as well yes are we gonna try and make ourselves either a porch or a veranda I'm wondering for porch is enclosed and fir end is open but we're not gonna waste these embers either because we brought with us yes being fishing shows - mackerel got a roll them in tin foil and cook them please - looking for here never taste rate with anybody else have this problem with cooking up cooking for I'll tell you well we'll make it cut just kiddy don't worry situation a bit of bacteria never hurt anybody just make a little path like that and then cooks basically in its own juices we would bring lemon seasoning everything like that guys but we haven't bought it with us we came on a whim here didn't we really is naked man you don't need such a good taste if you don't need loads of spices and who knows what this nice cold it's just got stainless but what we're curious about is just there's some degrees is good like a protractor degrees on it so what's that about also what's the hole for is it for Bill emails out I don't know it's got the guard here it's a really really comfy cozy grip it looks army but I don't know it just has it wouldn't be if I was driving you know long and the police stopped me they wouldn't be impressed with I suppose here in England every country's different so there's our two classes the fires looking good now get them on there so the fire is still pretty flaming at the moment so I'm just gonna put them around the edge so they start to heat up there and then as that burns down to embers requesting roll up in the middle hopefully that will get me starting they won't take long be metal most fish few minutes five six minutes it's hot guys there you go we just pulled it and that should just feed off that skin look I mean look you can eat the skin as well perfectly cooked hmm glad you i'll bone it up
yeah no bone the benefit being you can pick up on clues away in know what meat you want as you can tell we've forgot most well sports and more bacteria on the fingers no it's bad luck if you stir a spoon because a lot of us don't have a spoon or fork Andy I stir the paint up at the end of the night and then clean it off or I stir some tea up yeah if you stir we or knife where we're gonna call it quits I think guys we're losing a bit of light we've boosted the light on the camera but we are losing light we've managed to get a fair bit done today but the next thing we really need to focus on is the door finishing the roof and we've also got a window to put in as well [Applause]

so made a brand that's a tough one I caught one Brad P I've kept HP sauce [Music]
there's a serious amount of bacon it Papa pig there's no pigs in England they're guys hungry good that is really good it's about three o'clock in the afternoon our guys we've been working what since this morning W okay the days are so short in winter so we're trying to get loads thumb or the lights kid but we are starting to lose it now we're going to show you what we've done in a minute
once we've obviously enjoyed this food and had a cup of tea and we'll also show you tell you a bit about the plans of what we're going to do for the next episode things you can still keep working but for my point of view it's no good filming yeah the dark you can't I don't like filming loads in the dark so it doesn't come out good the footage will catch up it doesn't look in there well I'm looking at that monitor blazing sunshine but very bright yeah it's actually not is we've got about an hour barely an hour to finish the job we want to finish today so guys we've had our bacon and we've had our cup of tea that's got his tea I think over there just surveying or cabin I realized some of you might look at our cabin and think that's just a shed but it's not because they were in the middle of the woods and be we're gonna put a bed in there and we're also going to put wood stove hopefully at some point in there so in our eyes it is a cabin a dwelling made of pallet wood but hopefully you're enjoying the progress that we've made we've got lots more to do but first things first let's just run you through what we've done in this episode so we were done with the roof he's put it long ways should run down the other way but unfortunately I only had a couple of pieces and
fit like perfectly so we've screwed it down there overlapped here put the screws through down into the ridge which is running the length there it's all locked solid screw to the floor now it's not nailed screwed mutti bolt reviews where we can old nails we try to use all the old nails we can and there's so much about that 10 10 years more only with spirit level in it we've just very slightly back so any rain doesn't puddle here I mean you want to be standing here in the rain starts coming off the top well you've here's rain nobody inside so it's just sloping slightly to the back then we got the window we put that window in today and I cut the glass I didn't cut the glass here I'm gonna tell you that now I cut that back at home I've got a glass cutter an outer cap glass got loads of glass heavier than green house but don't use green house glass that's thick window glass that one got it in there with pins and I've also run some mastic had something left Oh God not well anything the pins the mastic is all left over and that just seals the glass in it but it's not to steal any heat in there because obviously we got like overlap here it's just basically to secure the glass in there and that's screwed in there as you can see there we've unbalanced up the base here we put reinforce of stakes down on the on the front here so that's a veranda where we done it'll be done so much we've all the door at the door we got the door one here just put a little whole back piece here just so done blow in the wind and again it shuts I'm gonna get bolt on here not to knock it look do you lot would probably leave something in there but nothing of any value if you leave anything of value they're gonna rip it open anyway and they're smashing okay so best to let them go in if they want to I suppose but stops it blowing in the wind an old handle from the draw is bolted the other way so what I've done is drill right through the metalwork and screwed in there so kiss a nice good grip the hinges unfortunately I didn't have three matching hinges I'd use the hinges and put spacers on there and we fired them all in and we have still at this stage not spent a single penny on the whole lot that's the dude even down to these bits just salvaged out the garage looking around it's amazing what you can throw in the base here has all been leveled out reinforced and the poles we put in here about 18 inches deep this is going to go up here and we're going to make a veranda or a porch to be safe we don't know the difference between the two I think they are the same thing and we're gonna put I've got some one sheet just one sheet left of the same corrugated it was a lighting vent for that tin I would guess and it's made out fiberglass boat look of it and I've cut it down a bit and we're going to try and get it up here on a cross support shape and that is over the top of us and then there's gonna be something else secret happening though I'm not going to tell you - this down
