Bushcraft - Using an Ancient Saw on Logs + Cooking on the Fire at Camp
Description
I needed a bigger saw to chop up some big logs. Decided to ask Dad. He only went and serviced a really old woodsman saw that needs two people to use! We headed to the Bushcraft Camp to test it out. Amazing how well it still cut. Oh yeh, and we cooked up some food on the fire pit :) - Hope you enjoy it.

Video Transcription
well guys I'm here at my dad's house we're heading out to the bushcraft camp in a minute but really I'm looking to get a bit of a bigger saw because we are going to chop up some firewood today and hopefully get that log store going and we want to chop up some bigger bigger bits of wood really bigger bits of dental we've got one big dead tree that I really want to get chopped up but he's busy doing something here busy just telling the youtubers we're going to the bush camp
and I need a big sort I think so have you got a big saw bigger than my little small one okay say what using the old we figured it's a billhook from what most people said last video yeah do you don't want to be there's a name on that I don't know whether you'll read that guys what's that read I've got my reading goes oh is Elwell someone said about I think that's the to either handle or L well yes L well yeah I've heard of that Wilson it says on their bone
yeah what about this saw then oh yeah I've got a bow so here's what I'll call the phone that's better than one I go up that'll cut some big trees well it's called that leave there which you can change blades on yeah but I don't sort of like it I'll fall in that way if there are you guys the same that's pretty bendy yes flexible it's very flexible a one on one my owns doing a long sawing stroke I find it twisted gems of it so I got be honest nobody to use it so I don't know what you can use I'm looking take me just for the back of your head what is that thing hanging up there is that a Sauron it's an antique always there yeah that is epic oh it's just a saw but I don't think he's ever been you is that two people one on each end I guess you're not the old Canadian American North American table saw but it's very it's quite narrow but I mean it's up to you can we could use it that would be awesome to use at the camp it requires a physical effort that does everything and it needs sharpening it's up there it's been up there all the years I know didn't use my dad's before me just a senora we've never ever used it do you think you could sharpen up though we're on the sharp and now I've got the workshop in there so but not today okay I want to finish all this kindling this is not for the camp is he's for my love burner in the hair but good heat there a boil means tomorrow I'll get this down backed up and what you want if you want or do the work or foiling it but you got get on the other end and use some fiscal effort that's all gonna call a big source you're gonna ask me what it is and you know what I don't know very very well all the handles here if it would be I'm not sure don't see what I've done that's not you said out but the years that years just it's not an order I see no names on it but I've painted it obviously trying to preserve it and I figure that's gonna stick you know if I try to sort through the wood what always find of master stripped that painting because I think that's gonna stick in the wood you know in the joint it's gonna kind of - triple that off so boy thanks a lot buddy it give me a lot of work
tighten those nuts up there's a bit of movement there but more I don't understand all those teeth which obviously every single one's gotta be recut to get an edge on them so just worn over and ever get the page on him it's killing the workshop see what we can do I'm gonna run the camera on these because they're not all even there's a there's a fixed patent of these and I'm not really sure how to approach it you know
well cutting the Vice but look this is my dilemma I know some of these angles I can just make out as a bit of an angle and I know to file the edges on those but I don't understand really it's there's a conform pattern here they're not just all the row of teeth there's two here let's say that's a pay I hopefully you can see that they're smooth this to here then it is one two three four then that to shape again then the one two three four and then the two now as you can see on this particular tooth that's the first of the batch of four long they're hoping you can see that there's the Sham phone there's the angle there and there's the angle they're on an open source previously then reverse them so that
the shampoo is that sidon on this tooth is this side and yet what I don't understand is on this one here which is that funny double one so we've got a runner for either side that with cutting edges on it appears in fact I can look there's no cutting edge on there if there is it's very very small is it is it just that is that is that all it is and then maybe reversed the other side in which case why don't they have even teeth alternately either side why have we got a row of four and we got those two do you push craft people out there new woodsmen just obviously know what this is give us some tips on it I'm gonna file it as best I can see what we can do and I'll tell you the measurements as well exactly to the inch five feet long Wow Robin in Canada see those swords they are not wider blade of them actual point to the base of the blade here is an 11-4 where because this is an old one I've got a fraction under two inches will allow for it to be worn over the years I guess that's two inches two inches wide five feet long I started here but then I got really close at the top end each end by the handle of the shaft where it was obviously never going to get a wood cut and I've noticed that these ones these funny little double ones don't have an edge trim now it looks like it's going edge because I started putting an edge on it but when I look at the ones at the top which aren't worn that if I come along here a little bit there's another one you just say that they're flat now I wonder if these four are the cutting blades and that is the clearing blade does that make sense so these four cut on the stroke back with a force and these ones these ones are designed to clear any loose timber al to make the next cut cleaned oK we've got that bass stuff pretty well call that black paint on which I publishing the porn in the first place but he's saved a lot of the I suppose met with from going rust he's been a rust underneath but I've got the office memory paper as well and this is what should have put on me really this is called I know it's just a brand name something something I'm gonna give them a plug I think gives any money ultimate protector for any exposed metal part it is a metal barrier spray just spraying on I tell it's like an oil would excite and that creates like a seal on there because I've got it now well that's much better that's original that's original metal they look coming back all really old dark dark metal and hopefully the next stage will be get Michael on the other end of it well guys dad has been ever so kind as to sharpen the saw we think we we think and we hope it's gonna work we're gonna test it out this is a log I've actually cut with my handsaw from a tree a fallen tree and I cut with my hand saw to make a small bench back in like bushcraft camp up they too or something I think it was but this is perfect it's already falling down it's up off the ground it's got the right leverage as we cut here this this downward pressure will be coming from there so hopefully the blade shouldn't pinch as well figure we're hoping to go what about two foot we're gonna make a bench really aren't we table bench kind of thing so we reckon about two feet we've never done this before
no guys never done this before I don't think that's ever sharpened to saw like this before not that sorry not that long it's a pretty cool looking sword I have to admit but we're gonna give it a go probably start off quite slowly and it might not work guys if it doesn't we've got the fire going anyway we're gonna cook some food and you can saw this with your and I can saw it with my little folding Laplander saw but it will take me a while I'll tell you why we I now know because you old stuff years ago if you look on the end here just show it see those if you look here this a square that those are here now that's a modern one a square now I think is either Victorian or Edwardian it's very very very old so somebody can look that up but I know for a fact where is two old antiques
they Square and that was what we look for to you know give us some sort of I'll show you provenance yes up in a minute
right let's give it a go get set up and get ready there's some exercise so anything is I think we don't push okay I think you'll pull in that way pull I don't yeah you okay and then you pull you're exactly the cutting stroke at the pool let's just case so we got put straight first all right you ready bolt see what we also gonna do got to keep it dead level
it's not easy it's not a chainsaw is it there's no petrol involved in this one I'll tell you what's quite satisfying that might seem that is really it's this feels like you're getting back when your ancestors you don't like yeah but the problem is all saw cut us know which yes start to get pinched we're halfway through this already now I don't know I really don't know I'm wondering if we should make it a wage or maybe tap your axe in there just to split that and open it a bit there's this pinching the blade isn't there maybe maybe we should be I mean should we should we have put another log under here to take a bit strange to stop that springiness because that's closing the gap here I mean it's what he's doing it's an antique blade I'm more worried about the handles actually you're screwed because if these are like 80 or 100 years old crack away it goes we're stuffed because I don't know what this wood is it's Hickory ash I don't know what it is but I wonder should we be putting her through put a little scuz it's deep enough to put a wedge in there just puts a little wedge or something like that let's make a wedge and it might just open out and I feel if we support under here yeah let's stop that springiness so bear with us guys we're learning all the time yeah that's it stop the spring yeah when I reckon if we can get in a wood wait here yes make a wedge over your [Music]
awesome
that was brilliant I'll see what there's a rhythm to it you see what we've worked through there that's impressive that's an antique saw yeah we don't know what the hell we doing as far as rhythm or anything like that I think we got it it was more power you almost have to it was pull it was all about pulling wasn't it we've made big mistake guys we've cut from the end yeah and that fallen tree roots there so it's very very springy that's why we tried to pack it up here just to get some rigidity if we wanted to cut the base off of hill we would have flown it through it I had no problem at all so listen it must be what the cave people did if they even had sores is they must have everybody must have been learning learning learning constantly constantly learn haircut voices why's it going wrong and working things out that's why at the human species is at the top of the food chain I mean I don't know what the name of this saw is know you guys might help us on that but it's I know they get some absolutely monstrous ones don't they but what it says when I was working on it in the workshop
sure the Canadians North Americans have a wide blade to it yeah dick maybe next gives it more rigidity because it's thick and this is like a an English woodsman's type of thing yeah it's really impressive with the hand was worth starting to go weren't they on that last oh listen if his hundred years old I'll be starting to go we've cut a tree with a hundred-year-old tool we want another one of these yet and then we can make some sort of table top on there and we got food to cook as well I'm we're new to after this Hey
okay
after all that saw him for that long so food toys fires go well Billie Jean T's on the way we're gonna have home cook hand there I'm gonna have eggs well you guys out there must have heard of ham and eggs
and better still they're cheesy I've got container we've got some Powerball potatoes you'll get a cup so we're actually going to fly out and have ham eggs and home fries okay so see it's a huge piece of ham I'm gonna cut and shave some thin slices off of this and fry it up it's really good the best ham we actually had I think we ever had what I call it Canadian bacon or Canadian ham it's really really nice get good stuff in you of his world Danish and Danish stuff look at that man alive you can eat this cold as well don't forget this is cooked but I'm gonna fry this up with the eggs that looks really good I want to cut it too thick cause if we cut it too thick it will take too long to fry basically being cooked we just lovely I'm starving I know it's making me hungry just looking at it you got little cutting pad play that up in part you can roll that it's easily packable isn't it what is it it's lightweight it's plastic I reckon that's probably good enough yeah skid mount yeah it got eggs as well and we've got eggs goat cheese now just gonna dice these guys up yeah no you see a knife flies through them like that that's because it's a Scandi grind yeah it's because the earth is purple with this and I'm just gonna loosely cube these up to make my home fries and we've bought two frying pans just on we're not messing around this time we're going for we're gonna die of starvation sure it was about minus 2 this morning wondering that fault - - yeah it was minus 3 when I wake up at minus T now this Carl gets for sure some spots yes get them in to keep the
this one yeah but you don't splash okay Cory said the fat is for look it did I know he certainly didn't thought of it they all the loose stuff oh yeah this is gonna be awesome I could tell Thomas you know he's home fries will take a bit longer to do than the eggs and the hand that's on the move now oh yes um for the ham missus are you kidding
I can smell that kicking the ready now people talk about your taking eggs down to the camp well why not listen all you go-go is in a camping shop they must be everywhere I get some of these heart containers and they just pop shut put them in the back of your backpack you can do your eggs as well and of course rather than leave any rubbish if you were to put the old eggshells back in there take them back you can do or eight shells on here on the fire you can burn them down you take back an empty container the home fries have one on the way the skin cooked it's cooked anyway but let's get a nice crispy edge to it one of the do because the home fries are done I'm gonna put this ham to finish cooking it's so hot this side I can't tell you let's get that spatula I'm over the top of the home fries like that and then there's a bit of juice coming out of this hand kind of cover over those home fries that fatty juice is gonna go although into the home fries not gives me space here for the eggs will be doing trips out you know people be wouldn't be guiding they want a guided trip could be trip yeah see if we can get all the shell in here nothing wrong with a bit of shell calcium is it where are we taking the grit off we just losing a bit of heat before we got it down on the coals we're making the scrambled egg now much easier doing it this way I just chop it up into all gets cooked
one who's gonna get the most here who did the most soil I suppose it really is fifty-fifty with those without speak old school so the taste test the taste test guys we've got the table over here now yeah all that strong it's worthwhile and this is definitely it was smelling amazing to you as well her makes I'm try that is awesome this home fries are really good not difficult to put in apps I got it hmm that's really nice hmm that is really nice
don't they go BM having plastic knives and walks again anytime soon no for mum thanks mum is well don't you tell us what you think your best meeting in the camp is you
