Bushcraft Camp Update 13 - Primitive Shelter, Fire Pit Cooking, Overnight Camp
Description
The Bushcraft Camp Update series is back. I build a Primitive Bushcraft Shelter with Wood Roof and Raised Bed. A storm destroyed the previous natural shelter. We also expand the perimeter walls. Towards the end we also catch and cook deep fried fresh fish on the fire.
The big lean to shelter has a window and there is still room for the ladder to the hunting tower. There is also plenty of room for my dog. My Dad joined me for part of the adventure but went home in the day. I stayed for a solo overnight at the Bushcraft Camp so that I could continue the shelter building the next day.

well we're drawing towards the evening now as you can tell dark got the fire going and we've made pretty good progress on the shelter obviously we can't really go through it just yet because it's so dark we're not gonna run through what we've done but tomorrow I'm gonna stay the night here now tonight dad you're going back going back there's chargin fishing trip tomorrow I'm not passing it up fresh Cod on the menu yeah so that's that's potentially going out on the boat tomorrow and I'm gonna hopefully carry on and finish this shelter it's I think it's going down to freezing tonight it's about three degrees now so it's not not freezing freezing three degrees Celsius that is it's meant to go down to zero but I've got the gear I'm prepared for that anyway so that's fine hopefully you've got enough firewood to keep the fire going and we've got all the all the lumber all the timber or lumber we had that good debate in video number timber number timber but all the wood we've got basically bucked up sawn up we've got rid of all the limbs and everything like that it's all prepped and ready the other side of the shelter and it's been great having that here really because if I can get work done twice as fast you're credible with that tomorrow tomorrow I'll be cracking on with that hope you can finish it and that way I can run through the shelter with you guys but before that well after dad's gone actually I've got a stake here to cook up a steak doesn't invite me yeah just the one stake for me sorry dad and yeah and then we'll settle down for the night and hopefully get some work done tomorrow got my cheap Amazon folding girl got this on Amazon I'll pop a link in the description if you guys want one of these well I get feel interested fairly cheap I think back on what I paid under a tenner at the time I think the problem with this is fire pit is it's a little bit too small I'm not gonna cook my steak on the flames Irish rump steak going on here and I think it's not a huge one 21 days mature the flame grilled steak here but that size cooks really well bit flame root that's missing out well there we go people a nice rump steak pretty well done to be honest pretty well done not quite as medium-rare as I'd want it gonna eat straight off the grill because I didn't have a plate and this is oh that's that's cooked really well people ask what knife I used to sort of cut cut my meats and process my feed I don't use my bushcraft knife usually I use these little folding knives opener number eight is this one they're actually quite cheap got this on Amazon those will help get old Amazon so I pop a link in the description if you guys are interested most of you will know about the open house very good luck nice very good nice hmm after this I'm gonna get the bed ready I just bought roll mat sleeping bag winter bag and I'll probably hunker down for the night because I can't really do too much with the camera battery light that's gonna run out soon and also I want to save battery for tomorrow say there won't be much talking of things tonight guys sorry hmm I have my steak like I said my GP phone Walmart is all amusing tonight because temperatures off to today freezing so should be fine just stops the sticks underneath poking poking through your sleeping bag got a new bag I was saying to you guys the other day in that video was it the winds hot tenting video in there and the canvas tent I did I didn't help like my previous bag so I got a new one from Mountain warehouse this is the extreme Everest down one see for season mode got a comfort of minus 3 to minus nine degrees comfort and -28° extreme it's not even gonna get to minus 9 it very rarely does down here in the south of hee
so that should be point for me gray duck down as well but I won't know until the morning really how it performs so let you know that I'll probably have my head I usually have it in this little mini I'm in the small lean-to at the moment because obviously the big one that we just build up you building with that is not complete yet and there's a draft coming in from literally from that direction that we've not put the sticks in so I'm just gonna and I'll be going to bed advice I'm in the sleeping bag it's puffed up quite noisy now off the bed for me we've done a lot of work today hope you've enjoyed the build that we're doing and tomorrow we're gonna wake up and probably get a coffee going or something like that and then crack straight on with the rest of that shelter there's a lot to do to it so appreciate you if you're still sticking by and watching thanks very much could I say my camera battery now my camera chip for tomorrow say thank you and good night I'll see you in the morning
well guys it's the next morning I've just bought up some water and the Billy sleeping bag was good I proved the sleeping bag that's really well I'm gonna have some the Jiva cubes are not using this is french vanilla coffee in an instant cube they've got sugar in this as well you can I think you can have non non sugar versions but this one's got sugar in it and I'm gonna have it in Anton's cook so this time
Anton subscribers sent me this cook so that he made it's really nice one and it goes I have to pull this on the floor oh sorry
otherwise I won't see what so poet went a bit everywhere good consistency though this time made it like proper porridge this is golden syrup porridge however I can't find my sporks I'm gonna have to use my porridge spoon in my coffee which will be
porridge flavored vanilla coffee what a mixture whoopsie
then if you guys can see that but that's that's the handmade cook sir that Anton made me I showed it in a video recently mm-hmm vanilla coffee that is really good so gonna finish my breakfast finish my coffee and then crack on with some shelter-building
[Music]
[Laughter]
so fun lots of work since this morning when I had that coffee in the porridge as you can see pretty much completed now the second shot used to be my secondly shelter that's gonna be my primary shelter now we've raised that up a lot higher I'm gonna show you inside in a minute but I've also repaired this wall down here because it had far too many logs in it and only needs to be one log thick and it was just falling apart so repaired this wall built it up to about waist high we've already got the wall there I've put a piece of plastic from a cement bag they sort of cement bags and bags that you can get from your from places like being qu DIY stores and things like that and I've just cut off a piece of that rinsed it in some water so it's clear and that's it's not clear see-through plastic but it still allows some light to come in as well onto the bed and I can tell whether it's night all day so I'm gonna give you a quick tour and then I'm gonna wrap things up for the day and head home so here you can see pretty much the completed shelter a little bit to work on in that corner this was the wall I've repaired which was breaking down we built this I built this with dad yesterday but the main main things that I did today was this and as you can see I've put in some supports takes every probably a couple of feet and here's my little window just pinched in I wrapped it with some cord as well some it's like just literally a plastic bag it's just reusing a plastic bag that would otherwise be dumped and you can see the fire pit through there the other lead to shelter through there and that will also stop the wind I won't be wind coming through that either I do you need to chink in the gaps a bit because there's obviously some gaps and some space and there's plenty of moss around that we put the dry Bracken that was on the previous shelter that was here we just reused that hunting Tower oh that's just the hunting Tower that's still there so the moss shelter here this lean-to we're gonna keep at waist high keep it nice and lay hunting towers fine reef is something I might work on lock store I've also done some work here and where these this wall and that wall were actually on the inside of the shelter of the camp sorry so it's allowed a lot more space inside and that's our camp kitchen which was the last bushcraft camp update I think it was camp update 12 where I built this Tiki kitchen and let's take a look inside the shelter here you can see I did change the bed from previously where I made it with dad yesterday it was much lower but I actually these big logs here which we used either either into the bed they were a bench over here but we've moved those or move those up the way and that's going to be an extra couple of feet you can only see the change in the color of dirt there of the soil so it's gave me a couple of feet in the camp as has that area there because this was a lot closer in back here and it just gave me no room so but way more room in the camp now so you can see the window doing its job over there letting some light in and the bed is probably a foot maybe 18 inches off the ground now and it's handy just reusing that bench that was down here to keep it off I've also see knocked in a spate there and a stake in the middle there to stop the flex in the middle of the bed some people like that I guess you can my other bed over there has some flex in it which just makes it a bit softer but this was just a bit too soft so I popped support stake in there so it's nice and rigid and I'm gonna leave this wall here because although I could knock that down and come through into the hunting Tower I'd like to feel that that's part of this shelter just leaves this as like a bedroom almost but it's looking good so now there's no flex in the bed it's nice and rigid so I could just put my roll mat down on here the foam one or an inflatable one if I want but I probably like to put some sort of protected down to protect the inflatable mattress but yeah Noyce rigid I've got support poles in plenty of space as well to store stuff underneath here I'm quite pleased with it
and I've got loads of room so if the fire gets smoky where it is smoky previously the smoke used to just come in this low shelter and it would just lean
and hang around whereas now that the ceilings higher if that smoke from the fire does come in the convection currents and everything will help to move that smoke up into the gap in between the top of the shelter and the top over there so it just helps to almost keep the smoke moving away hopefully from the shelter itself and I've got my window which I'm really pleased with something a bit different anyway and we love recycling as you'll know from our pallet wood cabin series [Music]
hey guys welcome to another episode of ta outdoors I'm here at my bushcraft camp and I've not been here for two months for me sometimes two months or something we've had trees down it's been carnage three storms in a row reading massive storms we've had that's probably would not come to this would have much guys because it's so dense so I manage there's trees everywhere two trees have smashed down the top at the top the Rigby cord going out to the tie out points that's the tarp at the center just completely smashed those down full-on trees as well we've had to move those up away and there's just a mess everywhere so I've got lots of tidying up to do because I do plan to do some more camping here over the winter months now this is a catch and cook video we haven't done the catch part yet cuz we're sort of doing it in reverse we've got the cooking part that's going to show you now what we're gonna cook how we're going to cook it we've got the campfire going it's gonna be good fun I hope you enjoy the episode so what we got people who knows well that is ours on a postcard it is a big chunk fill it of frying Cod we will know about Cod and chips that's what we have here in the UK so what keeps a British people alive well used
auntie auntie yeah not on the same plate though so cotton chip so we've got a nice Filat of a cod there and we're gonna cook a little bit of rice out with it as well you don't need much rice this is more with you on your own but listen we've been working away so this should be enough to keep us going that rice will swell up we've got all we got a saucepan on the boy it is boiling on the shooter in the moment we're gonna make up beer better in here using flour just regular plain flour I put my thumb over so I don't advertise which country it's coming from I guess you guys possum 7bf it's that stuff it's very sort of gassy but it makes it foamy you know it makes the batter like bubbly don't yeah and the bubbles help they've published you can make it with all the only if you want cooking oil just regular cooking all we're gonna be doing obviously to season salt and pepper could have put it in there
simple easy peasy let's crack on this one boys this is a cook in the bag one so you just put the bag in there and that's going to drop the temperature obviously so let's stop it boiling for a while we'll leave that take about 15 minutes but it's well on the way to see the bubbles go in there I dunno how much flour it's gonna end up in Mike's Billy to my
this better so got the plain flour we're gonna shoot that in there we don't know how this is how much 2 cups 1 cup 10 ounces we don't care about handful whatever point because one thing I hate people is litter I really hate litter in the outdoors no need for it pop okay oven first thing you're do boys smells okay the histor sounds okay and by golly it's okay for better put a little bit in there listen take my tip don't put too much in first because it's like making up bait for ground bait for fishing you can put the water in but you can't take it out I've stolen the wife's whisk because it's very handy for making up the batter you know that's thick at the moment you just keep adding a little bit of beer makes me sound like an alcoholic fish master I'm gonna call their fish master our main cook chef Wayne combo is a really really good fish here you want the consistency of gloss paint then we're just whisking all this up you see him going like crazy there I'm just gonna check the time on that rice okay a little bit more in there you're a good decent splodge of oil in there because it's got to cover the whole of that fish I think that should do us let's get this one on the fire next to the rice while that's warming up final whisk of this batter now that is a consistency oh you can see that I figure that's about the consistency of gloss paint little bit of salt and pepper in there I don't know why we put salt and pepper I know we put pepper in it we put salt on a salt fish and we all know if you spill a bit of salt in your right hand over the left shoulder into the face of the devil let's get some pepper in there on a whisk up we run that down the left we'll run a split in two so we got one piece each so I couldn't lift it I could cut it into cubes they call them go John's you can do that but I think I look two pieces like that there's enough of me and Mike and I left the skin on this sometimes that crisps up people actually like you know seeing the skin and eating it indeed not just seeing it so they're all you got to do is dip that in they're gonna leave that to soak just want that oil heats up Oh for those Phillips this should be nice I'm going to use tongs for this guys because we're dealing with cooking oil
I just low it all in slowly hopefully it won't stick to the bottom very careful with all cooking on the big thing here is once I seem like that just leave it
I should take about 35 minutes and you can see the rice is there bubbling and boiling away hey people look at this still steaming rice is done there is a lovely feeling better Cod I'm gonna have to maintain superiority here I'm afraid Mike that's a good one okay cuz I'm gonna have tartar sauce online oh yeah chef gets the best Phyllis personalized cameraman comes second yeah why not get a bit of rice in the tartar sauce as well you could do yeah please when she scampi won't you it's a bit of hard rice in it but there you go people you can't say that doesn't look good and I trust me is gonna taste good and I know because it was caught by myself the fish weighed 17 pounds and here is the clip
I don't think I'm alone seriously so lucky and that was on some Weymouth squid will get Wayne hold him up for you and take a look at it but we figure it's high teens to walk 20 but probably looks about 80 so well please took a nice piece of a nice piece of squid gave me good scrap - well his grams caught him holding up by the way longer hold at other people's fish but he's filming a lovely fish this is I think he's got to be got to be 18 you know close there's a very very nice fish very like in color steak deep and you find with Cod when you get a bite if it's a ray or Conger they tend to kite up with the tide and go right back beyond the boat this state deep which maybe think was a cod all day long we've got the camera light this timer actually working hopefully it won't run out of battery like the cabin episode that fishes gorgeous Dan vicious so good fresh Cod oh I haven't caught another one since well for those of you who like to know a little bit about fishing the cord can be caught around the UK certainly and other countries as well in deep water from a boat but you can also find areas in the kitchen from the shore deep rocky water beaches you know you can catch them on there we got loads of films up different you know fishing films or there whatever fish I want to UM see a fishings YouTube channel dad's YouTube channel called ta fishing or just type into YouTube ta fishing Cod or cod fishing ta fishing and you'll see dad's videos on cognition but evilly you've had some good ones haven't you good sessions Adam driver 30 but very often the big ones over 30 don't taste as good as a smaller one so a wise person would bring two beers one for the batter very true one for after a wise person will be the first one who tried to be like well that was a lovely dish that thank you very much enjoyed that and where well you can see it's dusk it's getting later now the winters are starting to we've passed the winter solstice winter solstice years past so the wit you can see it skate its coldest day of the year longest night but anyway thank you very much for watching this video really appreciate it hope you enjoyed it maybe you learnt something if not hopefully just enjoyed watching it anyway there's a whole playlist on me building this camp it's called the bushcraft camp update and I've done about 11 or 12 of them now I think so if you want to watch that there's either a little eye and one of the corner of the screens that you can click and it will take you to the playlist or go to the show more section below we also we also have our pallet wood cabin that we've been building together which has been really good fun has been going on going to work for that really good fun yeah and we're gonna carry on with that and if you want to see that again either click the I in the corner or in the show more section below there'll be a link to the pallet wood cabin play st and subscribe you can subscribe in hit the subscribe button exactly if you will feel when you're not subscribed hit hit subscribe and go search it on YouTube or wonder what they've called it now if you hit the subscribe button I used to think yet the pie is all for it you're so old school and take the bell the little but a lot of people have said they've just been unsubscribe from our channel so even if your subscribers please check the yes little bear icon is tit is selected and you select all notifications because otherwise you don't get an email notification when we do upload a video so yeah thanks very much joy I'm gonna come back here soon for an overnighter maybe one or two probably two nights I think I've got the ultimate thermal property is it a blanket is it a merino wool no it's called the wife anyway we appreciate you watching the video guys and we'll see you soon in the next episode [Music]
