One Handed Shelter Set up Unedited - Not Staged

Description

So this was fun. I've done a few Live type videos recently and I think they are so fun to do. This time I took a step further and rigged one hand so it could not be used, but still had a goal of 15 minute setup. I learned a lot from this experience and I now share it with you. I only cut out camera position changes during the setup. It's kind of humorous in places. I have more respect now for persons handicapped, injured, or disabled. For this video I used my Poncho for the shelter and my survival blanket for my sleeping gear.

well Perry peacock here with wilderness innovation I've got myself a new challenge today be another time thing but I'm gonna give myself a handicap I brought along this role of they brought along this roll of tape here all right so broken me off a stick right here I'm going to flip this around for right-handed use okay so I'm going to take a little bit of this shrink wrap here so I have alright there's my handicap I got one hand to work with I don't know I'm gonna try I'm gonna still try to do this in like 15 minutes alright so here's my here's my phone I've got a set a timer here for let's see

fifteen minutes hopefully can see that fifteen minutes start there we are starting okay I got to go with the line my poncho and everything this might be pretty sloppy but you know you understand the situation here okay here's a piece of cord this is going to be fun all right I'm gonna let it go about waist-high right here now this gonna be the challenge hopefully we're in range - all right so normally I can't even think without my other hand I wouldn't make a very good handicapped person all right so normally I'd go around my fingers and turn up like this and grab this other line right here okay see if we can get it that's not even the right night well this is frustrating already a good thing I'm not

and try to drop it off top of there I'm not doing good all right so what a day by heart I managed to get myself a loop in here and thought this is crazy actually that's not gonna work cuz that's gonna slip holy cow I didn't realize how much I think with my hands alright so I'm going to go this time yeah it's gotta time you're not in here I think I'm already gaining respect for you know somebody who's had a handicap their whole life or something they'd be laughing at me right now like what an idiot

I can't even tie a knot without it the other hand well you know this is my first this is my first attempt at being handicapped okay now I've already I've already used seven minutes all right normally I would be well I don't know guess I'll go ahead and see if I can use my arm here so a taut line well your round through here twice okay and I got to come to the outside once and come on dude you can do it alright now I got to get a little tension on the line so I can dress it out a little bit here we go I think we're getting it okay okay okay I've got my ridgeline up actually I want to come back to the ground a little bit here I've got my tarp accessory kit for Poncho's here now I'm going to take advantage of the point on the tent stake to feed that through there there you go oh wow my talented or what and I want to go oh man the ground is about frozen I have to get a sniff to pound that in now mind I'm left-handed to do everything backwards okay there's that one in mistake you hear and I'm going to put my thumb on the tip of the snake stretch the elastic and tripper here we go and I want to get to get past the head here so I got some stretch on my foot all right so and since I used elastic on the back there that makes it possible to stretch on the front thigh up here all right I'm afraid I'm getting close to the end on my time here okay I'm gonna have to I'm gonna do half hitches two half hitches right here there we go tug on that okay pull that out here take I'm almost at a time here here

just getting started I just put my foot to the side of it to kind of guide the stay kind of hold it upright I missed and hurt my foot down a little one of the pluses is the ground is pretty frozen so now the ground is pretty frozen so all right so Hut see here a little awkward okay so you gotta go through once through twice oh my gosh get down there there we go all right there we are and through one more time I'm gonna make it slippery just because anything else is too hard okay that's kind of double on itself okay I got a little tension oh that's good

all right get this last one get this at least the shelter will be at least the shelter will be up so again every time I do this moving the camera ah I rest that on my arm pull it through I know you're not gonna be able to see this way we're gonna go everyone come on into the rope got cut in there okay another one to half inches all right no I kind of get up not like living here there goes my alarm I'll have time stop it up okay all right good no that's some tension all right

just a shade over 15 minutes we got the shelter erected even handicapped with with one hand tied knots and stuff with so not too bad I'm going to stop the timer and then I'll finish just kind of laying out my bad nut sort of thing okay so in that suite we got us a shelter up in just a hair over 15 minutes one-handed basically only tell you not with one hand and cut and everything I need to do and I'm left-handed so I had to work of my right hand so that's a little bit more of a handicap but because I put the I put the shock cords on the back stakes right so when I pulled my cordage here on the front it made a lot less hassle for me because that means I'm automatically tensioning as I as I cinch down my taut line it pulls against the shock cord so it maintains a constant tension that's something valuable when you're kind of handicapped working with this stuff all I need to do is grab something a little bit of some pine boughs or something to lay down here so I can be so I'm not laying right on the snow and the and a cow cow pies and all that junk that's you know all around here all right let's go let's go okay I got my phone running here timer of course you know I spent over a minute talking to you right there but plane bells are really good to use because they can give you a lot of padding really quick

a breakup but I can yeah one-handed have another

now if I were in a survival situation all right kind of skipped around the tree a little I'm not taking everything from one spot I fired a survival deal you know game on all right now I gotta get back to the camp this way hey what to have my tab most my boughs what my body's gonna let somebody in

move the camera see all right so here we are so I'm laying these in like I showed last week with a herringbone style wanting all the stub ends to the facing out just kind of keep overlapping stuff here so it kind of helps it to lock together and also because this stuff it's kind of its kind of fan shape here cover over this cow pie right there yes we can now yeah that's really that's enough space right there for my upper body I don't really already have to have anything for the rest of me so let's see now I've got to get my blanket up lean on it with my elbow here on the bag hold on kneel on the end here doesn't help I'm kneeling on the whole thing there you go there's the blanket and the nice things all I gotta do this is considerably easier with both hands so really here I am got my shelter I'm gonna pull back on this with a rope in a second

got my shelter done I'm really ready we're really ready to sleep right now this this isn't this little episode here isn't a contest it's not Oh see who can do it fastest it's a personal deal between each person you go try it because everywhere you go everyw circumcised going to be different you know so you don't know I mean whatever you run into but it's kind of fun to challenge your own self and just try to see how you can come up with in a limited amount of time and with here it's kind of a small auntie cab so it's kind of fun it went a little better than I thought it would I thought I might I thought it might encounter more difficulty tying knots and doing some of the stuff but it went along better than anticipated and but I'm glad I did this that's the only way you know what you can do is to try see what you come up with

I'm going to pull out on the hood right here to give myself considerably more space inside pretty ugly but doable pretty quick here really about right there we'll be fine so I'll come through here we'll do us a taut line again once twice through the middle a little tension on it and once on the outside let her drop it's kind of good to let that drop because it helps to get some tension on that's good right there okay so there's a nice back view from a little distance here I've got good tension all the way around I've got good space my back wall half my back wall is almost vertical so that's good that's that's what gives me the space inside here I'm on this side pulling back on that hood gave me shoulder room and stuff so now the poncho / tarp isn't laying laying on me at all it's it's back away from me now so it really opens up my space inside here so this is this is quite a fun little experiment coming up here and doing what I can just wrapping up my wrist I didn't want to be able to bend my wrist and you know to use that I didn't want to use bail use my fingers so so I did all this what's kind of a split wrapped in here just for just for kicks so I get all the way in here like this and I'm good to go I'm insulated a bit from the snow and the cold or ground underneath me by this layer of pine boughs if I needed to I can add a little bit more to it and boost it up a little more somebody that's used to there's so many it's used to having all their limbs all the time you know this is kind of a new experience for me you know because you know now I have to see what it takes just with one hand to be able to do some of this stuff this is pretty comfortable right here just claim it inside of here I'm not now that I've laid here for a little bit I'm not feeling any cold coming up through the bottom because of those boughs I'm feeling some nice warmth on top of me here one nice thing is the shelter like this sometimes will make a difference just something overhead will keep some of that cold from settling down like some of the dew and the moisture sometimes it'll settle in on top of you and really give you a chill but I do have this dynamic Whoopie sling gonna hook the loop of that over top of here and then we'll go out here and tie it off somewhere so now by putting this stick up here now I've given myself a little peak right here now I could be inside of here and I can even take a little backpack stove and cook the inside of here sleep inside of here got my whole deal right inside this shelter made out of a poncho it's easy enough to make the shelter that I could do it even with one hand taped up a little snug I did that under that last strap right here I could feel the blood flow back into my fingers there's up inside of it that makes it nice you know pull back on that and pull back the other way on the hood so you know here we are you
