How to Hang a Bear Bag [PCT Style #2]

hey what's up Turtles its Creek here with blackout outdoors today I'm going to be doing a video on how to hang a bear bag or a food bag PCT style stand for Pacific Crest Trail I've already done a video on using this sort of method in a different situation if you don't have a quote perfect branch to hang the food bag from or your bear bag but this method I'm going to show that I did find a branch that will work and the other method you know it was great for certain situations but this is the easiest method the less involved if you will but nonetheless just I'm going to show you what you kind of need to get this started to get excuse me the cordage over the branch you're gonna need a rock something weighted you can put this you can do excuse me a bunch of smaller rocks in a bag which will you know give you some weight to throw or you can pick a rock you know that has some size to it but nonetheless you're gonna need something that's weighted that you can throw over the branch you're also going to need some type of cordage or rope that's long enough that's long enough for the task and I don't have a piece that's long enough right now so what I've done is I put a bend in it and I'll show you real quick how to do that but basically a bend just you can make pieces of string that are too small to use on their own and you can join them together with some strength or do the double this is a sheet spin but I'll do a double which I think believes sometimes called The Weavers Bend but this the double in it or The Weavers band gives a little bit more extra strength depending on the weight or the load it's going to be under and if you're using just for yourself if you're just your food bag it's not gonna wait that much probably but if you're doing it for a camp of a group of people the weight might come an issue and then the branch you choose obviously need to be able to hold the weight of the food you don't want anyone doing the live branch that's alive not on something dead that's what up there pull down it's kind of potentially fall and hurt you alright get this attached to the rock piece of cordage I need myself some working and over here bring this around do a 360 on it create this pivot point there just like that bring it back to this side working inside it under I don't there's actually a named method for how to do this maybe there is I'm not using one I'm just we're just going off a theory what l need for this to work and at that point let's put a message all right it's pretty secure I'm happy with that and okay and you need your food bag obviously for the sake of this video I have my water bottle wrapped up in this Shambaugh material just to give the contrast so once you can see this when it's up in the tree how far I wanted to away from the branch just to give contrast but you basically and also because it has this d-ring up here so I can attach my carabiner to it I'm using this as my food bag for the video and I picked out my branch I wanted to make sure

the branch is pretty high off the ground because in theory for this method to work or anything you're going to suspend food from a tree it needs to be four feet away from a tree this way you imagine of a tree joining up next to me it needs to be four feet away from the tree here and also hanging four feet down from the branch that you're suspending it over and also need to be ten feet off the ground and by using those measurements as a general rule you can pretty much guarantee that most animals aren't going to be able to get to your food at this point I'm gonna try to get this over the branch of my choosing I'm sort of have my paracord laid out neat around me it's not underneath my legs it's not gonna wrap around my foot I don't have this tied off but you could tie off the other end of the piece of pair of your quarters to a tree if you're unsure if the light might not be long enough and it might kind of zip through over the line it might keep following if you don't have it secure but I'm not going to do it for this video I'm just going to hold on to it and stop it when I need to let's give it a shot my pressure prick yeah money rock okay follow me up here steady now you can see which branch went over he's gonna untie the rock now and for the sake of this video it would be over killed I'll use a figure 8 knot but I'm gonna do it because I like that knot it's easy and it's super super strong I've done a video on how to tie a figure 8 knot can reference that video if you're super interested but basically it's like a bite wrap it around and once again pull through keeping it clean all right loot carabiner attach it - excuse me my food bag for the video and take my loop through my carabiner here let's created this imagine this is my food bag now if you have a cinch cord on your food bag using a dry bag whatever you're gonna need to find some point some anchor to get the carabiner attached to the bag and then at this point I'm gonna grab my other and pass this through now I got to suspend it on the branch I'm gonna pass the other end through here through my carabiner like that I know I'm going to take this up to the branch

go as close to the branch as I can once I have that there I'm gonna grab a stick it's the other piece of the equation that you need you're gonna put a stick in this line and the stick thickness is directly related to how much weight you actually have in your bag because potentially if you have a thick - excuse me - thin of a stick and too much weight in the bag this could break and your food could fall it would not be a good thing if you're not around but to attach this to the line the stick I'll do it from this perspective put it behind you up a little bit higher put it up higher that means it'll be hanging higher off the ground put it behind it wrap around at once create that right there and then hold that with my other hand and then in this hand I'm going to make a little loop roll it on itself put it over I prayed that push that to where this is and then I've effectively fixed this stick in my line and at that point I'm just gonna lower this down and let my food bag we'll stop where the stick is in the line and that's all there is to it you see this is pretty good this is pretty good height above me standing up standing where I am I'm about 5 9 my head so this should be 10 feet I'm comfortable with that you see it's good distance away from the tree and hanging down from the branch all the things don't look for now at this point you could if you wanted to tie this off but you don't need to you don't need to tie this off what I'm gonna do is is make a little Hank to get it off the ground that way it's hanging not on the ground but what's great about this method and what's nice is that you can see now the stick is just it's keeping this my food at this point at a fixed location and say I'm an animal so I'll be a bear for now I'll be some sort of Ursus and I come up here I smell some food right and say I do a manage to get my big ol bear claws on this and I'm trying to target this trying to figure it out but when I pull on this animal does figure now I'm pulling this the food is only gonna go up if it's going to do anything right now if I stay in with this pulling this it's only going to go up to the branch and the only way this is gonna you know animals gonna get into my food if they can figure out how to untie this stick if they pull it down low enough they can figure out how to get this off of it and then they can let it foxy fall and that's a lot you know animals are intelligent but I think I'll be okay that's what's great about this method and now it's an undo it if I want to take it down in the next night or the morning excuse me I just want to untie excuse me untie the stick from the branch or stick from the line just right Chiana take that out and I can now lower my food to get to it and there it comes convenient and that's all there is to it all there is to it I hope this videos hopefully will hope it made sense few other things to keep in mind if you're gonna be cooking in bear country is that you want to make sure you have this sort of safety triangle point here two point zero point here meaning you're going to be camping here and you want to cook here you want to store your food here and in these triangle the distance don't have a equilateral about 100 metres apart everything you do cook store food and camp you don't want to be doing any of it in the same spot because it could potentially be very dangerous if you have all that food stuff on you if you're gonna be store not just food in here you want to make sure you store like your toothpaste if you have wipes sanitation wipes you know anything that's scented that doesn't smell like your body you want to store at night you don't want it in your tent in your hammock around your camp it's going to track the animals and if you can you want to make sure you're camping upwind or where you're gonna be storing your food that way if the animal catches a scent through the wind these animals have you know thousand times better smell than us mmm-hmm smell food food but the scent stops here this is the source of the sentence gonna stop here if you're up 100 meters upwind it's not going to continue up into your camp that's going to stop here there's no reason for it to continue continue on into your camp and we go any questions let me know don't forget to check out new black outdoors comm standing are pushing that all a collection of all the content we're putting up online right now check that out any comments again let me know questions leave them down below this is correct signing out with black outdoors later Turtles
