Introduction to Fatwood [Pitchwood]

Description

Krik of Black Owl Outdoors talks about one of nature's most valuable resources, fatwood, or pitchwood. Fatwood is the result of a conifer, usually of the pine variety, attempting to heal itself with sap. The residual sap is then infused into the wood. It is most common amongst broken branches, snapped off trees, and scars from an object hitting the tree. The rosin prevalent in the fatwood makes it excellent for fire craft.
