Revisions vs. Re-Visions
Description
Our life is constantly revised without our knowledge, as a "default" mental mechanism. What would happen if we turned those unconscious revisions into conscious re-visions?

greetings my friends I know not all of you are English as your first language speakers and so there's a word I want to talk about today called revision and usually we use that word to mean often in a text a book a a new version of that book and usually it has much of the same old content but that content has been updated revised now I'm going to be tying together a couple different things here too we've hopefully a cohesive fabric for everybody but this is another one of those things that operates in our life without our knowledge and when it's operating without our knowledge we are a victim to it essentially it kind of rules over us it changes our world without us being aware of that change the forest monks out here usually achieve kind of a remarkable ability and that ability is that if I'm out with let's say three of them and I want to have a talk with one of them let's say about something they've been facing I know that I can step away with that person over that hill over there and I can leave these two forest monks and they will sit there happily be able to just meditate or watch the shadows on the trees for 10 minutes 15 minutes 20 minutes for an hour I don't have to worry about them they're capable of just sitting there without expectation without having to look at a watch now that's kind of abnormal in our world here's that word because we have been revising or sense of time a concept of waiting and patience for a long time now usually if something's not going on we very quickly grow bored we grow agitated frustrated if someone is new to the forest Munk program and and I have them sit for even five minutes without explanation or you know telling them when I'm gonna be back there's some agitation that starts to happen and again by the end of the program I can usually say I'll be back step over the hill and they're happy to sit there for however long
these are revisions happening in our life that our concept of waiting and patience has been revised in each generation and over time we have become less and less able to perform a simple act like sitting down quietly for unspecified amount of time there are so many things I get to do with the forest monks out here that have that same sense of revision I was reading a book recently about freediving and he was talking about how there's all these early reports of finding people that could dive under and hold their breath for 15 minutes at a time we scoff at that laughs and say that's impossible especially a little while back we were scoffing at that now it's pretty routine for freedivers to be able to hold their breath for five minutes and the world record is now over eleven minutes I think that's not with oxygen that's just
holding your breath on this air reproaching that 15 minutes you have to wonder if this is an ability we lost that we were able to hold our breath for a long time way back when and that we've revised that over time so that nowadays a lot of people are lucky if they can get 30 40 seconds so we practice these breath holds we practice echolocation practice being just being in the forest we practice recognizing plants a taste by smell one of the most damaging and unseen places where we are revised without our knowledge is in the realm of technology but the coming of the laundry-room machine who we no longer know how to clean our clothing with GPS we forget how to read a map with Google we forget how to ask questions of real people with algorithm news feeds that only show us one side of the story we forget how to think critically and what I believe we're doing when we do this consciously is we instead of just unconsciously having revisions we are now re-visioning re-visioning we are setting a new vision for what we're capable of and then we're reaching out for that we're saying maybe I can hold my breath for 15 minutes and maybe that's a long haul but but maybe I can maybe I'm capable of that and people start to practice and you know often within a couple of weeks their breath hole is up to three minutes or more and they're really surprised that they were capable of that so they're beginning to revision what they're capable of when people first start echolocation training often they just laugh at how fun it is and how amazing it is that we're capable
of doing some of this stuff what I never knew I could do that and here I can do it and so can she and so can he Wow we're revision what we're capable of and so this revision impress when we have it working for us Wow they can do things we can look at our life and we can say let's let's hearken back a little bit let's study our ancestors just maybe just a generation or two back maybe way back you know look at some archeology and such what historically do we think those human beings were capable of then turn that vision to ourselves and say wow am i capable of being away from my smartphone for twenty minutes when I see that that I'm not able to I start to see look there's this revision 'it's been happening it's happening without my knowledge it's just happening on its own I am blind to it and thus it rules me and I become this new version this revision person without any vision of who that person is but if you revision revision yourself and you say ah I might be capable of amazing things of which I hardly can comprehend what can I do then hopefully we can start to create a dissatisfaction I know this is terrible in our culture we always want to be satisfied but what about cultivating a dissatisfaction with where we are when we do that we start to see maybe I'm not satisfied with just sitting down and watching The Evening News again and hearing the same old thing over and over maybe I'm not ok with just eating this sugared cereal and feeding that to my body maybe I'm not ok with spending six hours on the internet a day maybe it's time to revisit my life and myself and to say what am i capable you are capable of amazing things you don't have to just scrape by you have gifts you've heard me say this before and it's true you have gifts to give to this world I mean giving those gifts you're gonna fill yourself with so much passion and love and joy knowing that you're giving to others this this is waiting for all of us I've been hearing from some of you that have been telling me that your revision in your life right now some of you are doing some crazy things selling off all your property and moving in to a little place out in the woods dropping really lucrative careers to pursue something that is really meaningful to you there's people around us doing this please share in the comments if you have revisionist we can inspire each other down there in those comments that's where the real magic of these videos is where we share with each other we inspire each other I cannot wait to read what you have to say nope do you all thanks for watching [Music]
