An Adventure, Sharing Woodslore

heading out for a little adventure with Brett and Simon it's an orienteering adventure and Simon's going to try to get us to a certain location back [Music]
this is princess pine use it as a nice cordage it's pretty strong I mean it's not really strong but there's some basic cordage tasks I don't like to use it unless it's really abundant though this is not actually a little pine tree even though it looks like it it's a club moss ancient ancient land you can see where those run right through there [Music]
[Laughter]

[Music]
buh-buh-buh-buh-buh buhbuh buhbuh [Music]
this is wintergreen just like the name sounds it has a really wonderful flavor kind of a minty flavor it gets a red berry too it's just as delicious and it stays green all winter long underneath the snow
wintergreen here's one of those wintergreen bears very distinctive little star on the bottom very delicious [Music]
twin flower and this one also overwinters and in fact this very is from a sauna and it's taste kind of bland but it's edible and you can sometimes collect a lot of them interesting method a still here but often they are in this thing just been waiting there all winter do fine oh yeah oh yeah beautiful fat on another piece of something that wasn't China really it looks really similar chaga so this one has been on two occasions where I've seen stuff really yeah so I'm not sure if those beetles like this type of mushroom love from this so here we have well we haven't done it yet but here we have possibly some fireball
oh and a fire mode but you can drill to choke on her yeah yeah we haven't done that yet
[Music]
this is that good Punk or that we powder it up yeah I'm able to kind of rested yeah I actually like this stuff this is too wet but that powder this is if this powder was dry and but that would hit really nice from a magnesium starter fever live back there [Music]
it's all around us but that we can use for survival and you wouldn't know any about it if you didn't like it for its like I kind of have to admit I just saw woods oh yeah there's no meaning in flavors and services
[Music]
down there he's gone like there's nothing fresh we did it at the perch oh yeah I see the tree is gone yeah I'm sure but like there look of this mmm almost tells me it's gonna be a saliva no no it's more than rain I guess yeah yeah they took it away over to that Lodge for sure yeah but this is this is not an old one that's zap from it yeah so this is its first spring essentially since it's been cut which maybe you could see yeah but that's the urge as a SAP that some people tapped to it sorry you guys do that Nora no here's the birch oh yes got decided and all the kids who were in Wow
we were wondering if there fish out in the lake
it was a loon we saw over there that was one question been down here is he Scott and lots of scales in there there's a little teeny bit skeleton but yeah there's fish out there for sure awesome prehistoric plant here scouring Raj and this has silica in the kill most feel it and so if you used to scrub your dishes the coolest way is if you have a pen you can just take a small coin you can take it and just polish it up beautifully with you it's very abrasive people use it for back in the day so we would use this to scrub your cast iron and it works really well I think it actually looks better than the modern scrubbing 70 years yeah let's go this in general I clean know it if mind if I make it there and so did Walmart yes brick this is one of the first flowers in the woods some of the trees are the first things to flower this is a leather wood treat haven't used its bark but supposedly its bark it makes a pretty nice cordage we get these almost like a little child story and they're just all over the ground here oh we can see they're coming from this big aspen tree [Music]
perfect place for tag now this tree just fell oh and star pattern [Music]
my wife didn't wanna leave them so you just scared out those Woodcock last night look at those beautiful eggs [Music]
you've all heard about moss growing on the north side of the tree okay well this time it's actually true yeah yeah it's pretty evenly stirred [Music]
I'll make of that what you will what's this yeah exactly it's a bird yellow-bellied sapsucker these little tendrils these tendrils say that there's ground being under here we were digging down here and here's one of them you wanna taste your first Gumby yeah so drop it off a little bit and then you can I just have one hand here but I'm kind of just with your fingers rub that off to clean it that coating comes off yeah slowly yeah you don't have to do that if I want to eat a little soil oh yeah that's fine hmm that's really good okay yeah if I hadn't left you awful Jarr oh those that would be my favorite feet [Music]
this is come on why with this first time we second time we tried this it's actually kind of hard to put out if it goes right up yeah yeah I feel like that would be a great firestarter huh yeah I bet if you'd broken up and like crumbled it up [Music]
[Music]
[Music]
that's nice
this is the milkweed but this is a variety that grows in wood and so this plot looks really good for tinder bundle this is awesome cordage you can use this in its in their bundle tea of yours another little trick with this is if you want to see which way the wind is going and today you can feel there's just a very slight wind but you can't really tell what it's doing so you can take one of these fluffs and let it go and watch [Music]
I'm gonna get a wind direction and today the room is going towards the west it's the cedar which is a really awesome tree a lot of the branches you might see have just kind of the perfect curve to them for a ball for Bowdre this is what I learned bow drawn and this bark and you know me I didn't actually peel this off this is already up like this but when you start shredding this up let's see if I can show you how to do that here yeah you just break some this is a little weathered so it's not the best and then you start to just go like this almost looks like it's smoke starts to come off of it this makes a fibrous tinder which is I think it's the best tinder in the world you get sometimes a really just nice furry nest but sometimes it's nice to have different thickness of materials in there because it's a little fur will take from your ember and your hand drill your bow drill but then it'll get more power as it burns into those bigger pieces right there
it's a swagging loss as all kinds of uses kind of antibacterial [Music]
use a stick or use my knife yeah okay what's up Brett yeah go up to that high ground so you found a nice clump of spruce sap which is good for fires so you haven't tested it out yet right oh it's nice nice and soft okay yeah that's what we can make the pine pitch glue out of - that is oh yeah this is yeah that will burn like incredible I can just tell just from the tanks which are more like hard yeah maybe like this one is a bit harder it might need more flame to catch yeah it's not sticky like my fingers aren't getting Tuesday well actually trees do really cool things [Music]
look at this either left all kinds of fire-starting stuff yeah toss pre ready for starting fires [Music]
that's what they do when they are alive [Music]
[Music]
[Music]
and then it was trying to go straight into a little teeny piece of China very awkward try fighting stealing to the dust from our attempt at the hand ro here's where I shot this is the cedar this is not even very well done but I hit that with the magnesium fire started and it just takes me really well I'm sure to save the chaga dust does that I did the other day actually does what no target dust here add that in thumb okay so let's let that grow like that girl we need to make that girl somehow it's here [Music]
well if you want we can just let it let it sit yeah it's kind of going quite well under someone yeah if we can get some of these bigger chunks to take hmm that one's going so why don't you try with this why there's more than that one [Music]
oh man burning and burning through [Music]
you want to put it in the fire that [Music]
[Music]
I did make a fire ant on the capital side beside me [Music]
especially
oh sorry
and false morel yeah which often that means that the morels
it's almost or it is the season premiere house this is a mushroom that is weird because it's classified as deadly poisonous by some people and other people
[Music]
- wintergreen berries and leaves my daughter Liliana always picks these he gives them to me he saves them in her pocket for me so I thought I'd bring her son back [Music]
well we're really not sure if we got to the location or not we got a little lost misplaced confused we had an awesome [Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
