if you've been watching the channel for a while you've seen the Spartan cold fire challenge there's the fire and ice challenge which we're doing in winter and you fall through and then you try to start a fire afterwards but the Spartan cold fire challenge is actually more difficult because we choose a day when it is cold and wet and if you're an outdoors person you know that these days when it's just above freezing and cold and wet and some wind way more dangerous way more cold then when it's dry there's snow on the ground you know effectively cold now talking about the ambient temperature but how much it affects us so Helen came to Rio of the University a couple months ago and she had seen Richards fire and ice challenge and she really wants to take it on so today we have got about a 44 degree fahrenheit day we've got some wind we're taking a long walk down to the lake out in the woods and you know a lot of people warm up before these sorts of things kind of call pre-warming well Helen has decided to come in shorts and barefoot so she is super excited about this come along while she gives it a try and she is actually gonna make it even harder on herself by before she starts tries to start a fire she is going to immerse herself completely in the cold waters of the lake barefoot short okay is the say most people they pre warm before this you know they go run laps and get really wine this you're just gonna go from anything you want to share does he get ready for this everyone including and you two are gonna get in the water too I hear all right [Music]
[Music]
get your breath yeah find your breathing breathe deep and long finding yourself in your belly yeah it does brisk out of the Hall of the Porchester to the better yeah
[Laughter]
nice good deviating let that breath goat go deep let us sit on your belly Oh meditate Wow [Laughter]
it's tingling you guys seem okay now but you found a peaceful place [Applause]
[Laughter]
[Music]
you go under okay I did that once Wow [Laughter]
yeah you seems super cool it might be hot when you get out actually sometimes people feel hot yeah it's like right away I still warm oh
Helen anytime you want to come out and start the rest of here okay so we are gonna go try to make a fire it was yeah and you have gone into Zen monk mode or something Alexis wha yeah your skin yeah yeah so that water is cold enough that when you guys got out sometimes your skin kind of turn bright ride and feel hot do you feel warm right now dude Wow because the wind feels hot this is smart you got back you got into shelter a little bit you're getting birch the Mitel we call it after drop so you'll feel warm for a while and then it's going to get really hey some chanterelles
seem like you're doing pretty good yeah hands okay
definitely what I want to do that outfit on yeah cuz I just got beat that's so don't be like what but I'm not like really right you're kind of drawing on yeah I still have a sensation of heat on your body okay so like seeing the progression yeah yeah there's there ways to go this kind of water immersion like everybody's feeling why right now those guys are feeling worn - but there's nothing up kind of a point where the body stops it's kind of an illusion it's just heat on the outside of the body and the skin what we're losing heat pretty quickly but you're performing awesome under these conditions it's still good dexterity it looks like that's not going to Aaron today I'm saying almost I almost feel like that magnesium fire starter is like crappiest method of fire starting in the beginning when you don't know how to use it if you think you know how to use it and it's so hard but once you know how to use it it will get you out it'll get you firing almost nothing else well yeah that's definitely my relationship with it I very did not like it I would have definitely preferred Clinton still anytime go for that I mean truck cloth really helps yeah I I just didn't have a method down and it took me they know I don't know why it took me longer till I really feel comfortable to mag starter than it did a handrail for the reason that I just wasn't I wasn't striking it correctly I guess yeah or whatever but now you know Mike started feels like a lighter yeah if you have some birch unsurprisingly there's things really good with the two at the back sorry yeah one or two strikes you guys doing good down there okay shaking a little bit Aaron Oh like first time you mean it's new tricky cuz you're gonna be depending on flames with the system rather then then I call okay but it can be done [Applause]
wow I see flames little team clue no could you have a birch match like in your hand one of those hands so that soon as you see those flames the caption course or even set it in there so it's yeah it's a few seconds of reaching for it that's what rich but still working just does it so wet yeah that's basically what you're fighting and then capturing that flame this in this year nice applause really Aaron elects this way to go you guys Wow doing that keep it going he's so much nicer yeah okay Oh the weather in Wisconsin oh yeah sorry I didn't hear recording oh no that's fine that's fine I edit come on
it's doing pretty good that Bert's going on there you run and get some chunks yeah yeah yes yes yes yes crosshatch it you got this all about materials too right yeah names like five days my gosh yeah if you can get a fire going this pretty much anything it really hasn't yeah yeah yeah so the trick is gonna be getting enough of a sustain thing with that birch and then getting some wood on there one that can sustain itself I feel like you're close but let's get some maybe finger-sized sticks going you're warming you it up [Laughter]
Allen dang Wow I think you're gonna get this funny like we're dressed up and you can feel yeah yeah Sun was the experience challenges challenging as you thought it may be you're pretty cold this is uncomfortable I feel like you got it pretty easily not the level up to the intro [Laughter]
yeah we're not completely out of danger yet because it doesn't have a heart yeah stick on the ground here under the dirt look bitch was actually a little more dry than huh that's actually protected but I mean it's got that snappiness cuz it's dead tell them inside it's got it's actually try there I feel like you might have it yeah you have a heart I'm seeing I've seen the beginnings of something yeah dang how do you feel you're alive are you alcohol you you okay okay let's get you back long walk back it's still barefoot [Music]
