Hi, my name is Lilly and I like spending time in nature to practice my survival and bushcraft skills. This is a holistic survival channel which means that besides wilderness survival I also do modern survival videos. Sometimes I use modern tools which people might have at hand in a real survival situation. Also all of my videos are pre-recorded, which mean that they do not get released immediately after I film then. That is why seasons in the video can differ from actual seasons. Thanks for watching ~ Survival Lilly

hello guys it's me Lily and today I have a very special topic for you which is of utmost importance today we are going to talk about ticks and yes I'm as grossed out as you are when I'm thinking about ticks now unfortunately in Europe we have quite a lot of ticks and actually it's getting worse so I can remember when I was a kid playing in the woods we didn't have so many ticks on our bodies then nowadays because actually like now every year I get at least 12 ticks or so or even more and yes I'm very often in forests because I partly work there okay so I'm out there like every week at least or every two weeks and sometimes asleep in my shelters overnight and that's mostly the time when I contract most of the ticks yeah and the problem with ticks is that you can contract a couple of diseases from them and one of which is called Lyme disease which is a pretty severe disease if it develops in your body and yeah actually one time I've gotten Lyme disease but clearly I discovered it early enough and I took a course of antibiotics and then I was clean again so I was pretty lucky but not everyone is so lucky but before we go into detail about disease about the Lyme disease

I first want to talk about that ticks themselves so as I said before we are having more and more ticks here in Europe one reason is because the temperatures are getting warmer here so I remember when I was a kid we had snow which was bigger than me and now we can barely get like this bit of snow in the flat regions of Austria so of course that's good for the ticks because in harsh winters more of them dying but now they can really you know flourish and make more babies what kind of ticks do we have here in Europe mostly we have hard ticks at least that's what I have seen in the forest haptics to have a hard shell and if you crush them between your fingernails then it makes this popping sound so that's when you know that it's a heart tick vise is important because they are also soft ticks and soft ticks are slightly different from heartaches regarding the stadium's so for example a heartache in Europe has four stadiums the egg larvae nymph and adult tick and the soft ticks they have I think seven stadiums or something so now we have all of the for stadiums here and between every stadium the tick has two feet on a host so the heart shakes here in Europe when they reach adult size the head at least three hosts so yeah that's that's a pretty good amount of hosts you know so how to ticks get to us right a lot of people think that ticks can fly but actually they are not flying around because they don't have wings actually they are sitting on leaves and tall grass and on you know small brushes and there they wait for the animals to come by and they actually cling on to the grass like with their lower legs they cling on to the grass like this and with their upper legs they stand like this waiting for an animal that it can wrap onto and yeah they are pretty successful doing so I think ticks have existed for over 100 million years and that's quite a long time and yeah once they're on your body by the way they detect us by our brief briefing by our body heat and by vibrations which be caused by moving so that's how they detect and how to know that they now must cling on to us and yeah once they are on your skin or on your clothing they are going to crawl around on you because they really want to search for a good spot whereas you can't get easily - so most of the time I got ticks you know in the armpits because it's nice and moist in there sometimes I got ticks behind the knee or you know in between the legs it's also an area where ticks like to be and like to sting and most of the time I got ticks here at the hips or at my belly when the tick stings you so it's stinging not fighting it doesn't have teeth but it has a feeding tube that is pushed into your skin into your tissue and then it starts sucking blood and actually that wouldn't be a lot of a problem because we have more than two liters of blood in our body so we wouldn't die from that but the problem is that there are certain bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract of the tick and when the tick you know is sucking up your blood it also releases some of these bacteria into your body and that's a bad thing that's how you get in fact that before example the Borrelia bacterium which is then causing lyme disease in your body now lyme disease is quite a you know difficult to cease to manage so if you detect Landis's very early then you have good chances of getting away you can take a course of antibiotics or some people they just have a good immune system and they deal with the bacteria like that but some people they overlooked the red circle that most of the time is forming then optic has done you I had this red circle like behind my knee here and it was all itchy and I'm stretching a lot and then I took a look and then I saw that I had this big red circle because yeah I overlooked a tick that was on my body for longer than 48 hours and yeah the circle was coming like one week after I removed the tick so I was pretty sure that I had Lyme disease then I went to my doctor and she gave me a course of antibiotics I took it and later on I made a blood test and I was cleaning from Parelli on bacterium so I was lucky but other people are not that lucky

and here for example I have a neighbor and he's a forest worker so most of the time of his life he was working in forest and he also contracted Lyme disease the problem is that now it's in all of his body and it's spread really like in every part of his body and now the antibiotics they don't work anymore so he told me that his antibodies are always about 1,000 which is quite a lot and even if it takes antibiotics it doesn't really lower the antibodies anymore

and here so antibiotics yes or no that's the big discussion some people say it helps other people say it doesn't help it probably doesn't help if you have disease for a long period of time and Lyme disease has a lot of you know severe symptoms you can get everything from headaches to muscle aches to brain inflammation so it's really not a lot of fun you know very often joints are inflammation and tissue inflammation everywhere so it's it's really a concern so when you are going out a lot like me for example you should really you know know how to deal with ticks so what's the most important thing when you go out into the forest where there are ticks first of all you probably are going to get stung by ticks and that's not the problem if you remove the ticks in a certain period of time so the CDC states that if you remove the tick before 36 hours since the sting then you should be fine and it's not very probable that you will get Borrelia bacterium so you have a little bit of time even if it gets done that doesn't mean that you actually will develop lyme disease so basically the thing that I do is when I go to the forest every now and then I do a body search okay so especially when I'm doing overnighters I stripped my clothes before I go into the sleeping bag and take a very thorough look at my skin and as I said if you get stung by a tick it's not that big of a deal so don't freak out now when it comes to tick removal it's important that you don't play around with to take you should not wrap oil on a tick or burn it or do other things with it don't do it okay the only thing that you need to do is you take the tick at the neck area with your fingernails or maybe you have some small tongues pliers something like that you take it without squishing it okay you don't want to squish the palate because then it will vomit into your bloodstream so you take it as careful as possible and then you rip it out fast

okay don't wait for too long like one minute or so just take it and rip it out and most of the time every part of the tick comes out but sometimes you know the feeding tube or some other parts of the mouth get stuck in the skin and when this happens most of the time I'm taking needle and I just get out these parts because otherwise the wound will probably get intimated so yeah so if you remove the tick in the first 36 hours since the first sting then you really should be okay and for most of the time I was okay and I had quite a lot of ticks in my life so far so last year was really bad I had 12 ticks and this year five six ticks already I think and yeah I'm not afraid of Lyme disease because I know that I just have to search my body when I come home after an overnighter or stay in the wilderness and stripped down my clothes and then I take a shower and that's the next important step of avoiding you know Lyme disease which is hygiene so you have good chances that the tick is still on your clothes and not on your skin yet and yeah if you throw your clothes into the washing machine the tick will probably die drown or I don't know what and then yeah you have removed it successfully from your body and that's important so this is basically the best technique of dealing with ticks removing them early enough eczema in your body and look for ticks all right so what about these people now who have already contracted Lyme disease and yeah doctors mostly say to them that there's no cure any more if the antibiotics doesn't help then you're done and yeah that's that makes me really sad so I was doing a little bit of internet search to see if there are any alternatives to antibiotics and yeah you find a lot of you know dubious articles with home remedies and folk medicine but we only found one article which had you know scientific significance I would say and the article that I found was published in the European Journal of microbiology and immunology so that's quite a scientific source you know and the article is called effectiveness of stevia rebaudiana so it's the stevia plant the whole leaf extract from stevia against various morphological forms of Borrelia burgdorferi

in vitro so they tested out this stevia whole leaf extract they put it onto the poor alia bacteria and their findings were quite interesting so I'm going to show this now in the video basically it shows that this stevia whole leaf extract was more effective against the perilla a bacterium than all of the other probes they have tried toxic to clean which is an antibiotics they have tried several several different antibiotics and also they made control groups and at the right side on the bottom you always could see stevia a which is you know the whole leaf extract that we were talking about and it had one of the highest effectiveness against Borrelia so this might be actually one cure for this disease yeah it looks really promising and I have ordered some of this stevia a extract now and I'm going to give it to my neighbor and as a next step I want him to make the antibody test again and then we will see if this is really effective so yeah I'm going to try this out on a real human and I'm sure that he will be you know very happy if this is really working out so yeah that's the one scientific study that I have found on alternatives to antibiotics to Lyme disease and yeah so ticks pretty scary they gross me out like probably every one of you but there is something that can be done against ticks and now there are also alternatives to antibiotics so this was my video ticks and Lyme disease maybe you have your own personal story to tell maybe you have Lyme disease maybe you can you know make a comment in the comment section maybe you already have tried out this stevia whole leaf extract so maybe there are some people in the audience who have a positive you know outcome using stevia whole leaf extract I would be really interested to know so if you know something about it please write it in the comment section below so this was it for today I want to thank you for watching and stay tuned till next time you
