Hi, my name is Lilly and I like spending time in nature to practice my survival and bushcraft skills. This channel documents my learning process of all wilderness and urban survival skills. This is not a purely primitive survival channel. Sometimes I use modern tools which people might have at hand in a real survival situation. Thanks for watching ~ Survival Lilly

hi guys my name is Lily and today I want to talk about a very important topic which doesn't have to do anything with survival but it somehow fits the content of my channel so basically what's the topic about it's basically about people criticizing me for cutting down trees for my shelters and I often get criticized especially for my best video for my back up camp number one and they say oh how dare you to cut down so many trees how can you kill so many trees how can you contribute to deforestation the first thing that I want to say is that I have only used that standing or dead lying wood from a shelter and everyone who knows a little bit about nature forestry or biology can tell that by just watching the video in detail so I assume that these comments come from people who are uneducated today I want to explain why it was not only okay to use the dead wood from a shelter but also why it would have been okay to cut down green trees living trees from a shelter stay tuned okay first of all I want to ask you what do you see in this picture now a lot of people might say yeah I see a beautiful forest with some trees some people might say I see some trees but some are different and other people might say I see a beech tree I see a pine tree and a spruce tree over here but what else do you see besides the trees here I see for example a storage area for carbon dioxide and today I want to explain the cycle of life so basically three humans we need o to oxygen to breathe okay we breathe in Oh - and we breathe out carbon dioxide trees like these for example they need co2 to breathe and they breathe out oxygen what a lot of people don't know is that the co2 that that is getting briefed in by trees is not gone it's just stored inside of the wood as carbon so now let's say what happens if we just leave the forest alone if you don't use the forest for for example furniture or wooden spoons or for your paper or for firewood for your house let's say we leave this this area here alone so what would happen is that sooner or later the trees will die and yeah trees don't live forever just like humans sooner or later they will die they will fall and they will compose decompose and rot away so here I have a branch of a tree which is already dead and it's decomposing but what happens now with the carbon the carbon dioxide that is saved and stored inside of the wood yeah when it's getting decomposed all of the carbon dioxide is getting released again into the atmosphere which is bad for the greenhouse effect see sooner or later the battery of co2 is getting empty again and all of the after co2 is getting released into the atmosphere so now what happens let's say if we cut down this tree here and if we use it for firewood for heating up our house well the same thing happens if you burn wood all of the carbon dioxide that once was briefed in and stored inside of the wood gets released so it doesn't really matter if you don't touch the wood or if you use it because the same amount of carbon dioxide gets released into the atmosphere and let's say a certain period of time so to sum it all up once again it doesn't matter if you cut down a living tree and use it for firewood or for furniture or for whatever you want to use it for for example for building a shelter in the woods or if you just let it in the forest and rot away the co2 amount in the atmosphere is always going to be the same so then what is the really bad thing that is talked about in the media when they say don't cut down trees what they mean is actually deforestation clearcuts

very don't let the trees grow back but where you make instead feeding grounds for cattle very build streets houses shopping malls something like this so if you make a clear cut and and if you don't let the force be a forest anymore then all of the carbon dioxide which is stored inside of the wood is going to get released into the atmosphere and it really depends on what you do with the world for example if you burn the wood it goes fast and for example if you build houses with the woods you can store the carbon dioxide a little bit longer so to sum it all up once again it doesn't matter if you cut down a green tree as long as you let the forest grow back so as long as you don't make a clear cut and choose the area for something else

if the wood comes from sustainable forestry like here in Austria for example we have sustainable forestry we don't even use the wood that grows back every year we have not only all the forests here in Austria but also bigger forest areas every year so it really doesn't matter if you if you can't die on a tree here in Austria it really depends on the area and if you buy wood make sure that it comes from a country very have sustainable forestry that's important at the end of this video I want to say that I am not mad at the people who made these comments because they don't know it better and that's the problem I think that forestry for example should be a subject in every school but it's not and so people don't know about these things and I hope that with this video I could contribute a little bit to some people's knowledge if you are wondering what my background is I have a forestry education I went for five years to forestry school and that's where I gained all this knowledge yeah so that's about it I want to thank you for watching and if you want to support my channel you can do so by buying some survivability shirts and yeah if you subscribe to my channel please also hit a notification bell because then you will get an email every time I upload a video some people have complained that they don't get notified anymore in the subscription feed so if you don't want to miss a video please hit a notification pan I want to thank you for watching and stay tuned till next time
