hey guys it's Darwin here with another post-pc tqa and today I am joined by a person that helped make all of my PCT through my videos possible this is kat Pendergast hi so the whole time I was out on the trail and since I've been back I've gotten a ton of questions here on YouTube over on Facebook my patreon page Instagram about how I film my videos what I use to film how we did the editing how cat helped with the editing process so today I figured we would go over a bunch of those questions and give some answers how many extra miles have you done to film yourself walking I get that question a lot so obviously in the videos there's a lot of times where I walk past the camera or I walk up to the camera or some other thing of me filming myself I don't know how many extra miles that I've hiked Darwin would hike pretty far I don't know I mean it seems like a lot and I can see how people can think that you did he says it's not that big a deal but there's a lot of times where I just like almost run back to getting the camera

except for sometimes a little movie magic

sometimes I hike past the camera and then I turn around and I hike back towards the camera so we're actually getting two shots at one time and then cat decides on which one actually looks better it makes me look better so yeah I don't know how many miles though how did cat know what store to tell while editing the videos did she have direction or the Liberty to toe whatever story she wanted when Kevin and I first started working together I actually brought cat in for my pen hoodie trail through hike and February before I went out on the PCT whenever cat first started editing videos I kind of wanted to give her direction on all of it so a lot of times in videos at the end of the day I would actually look at the camera and I would - cat and tell her exactly how I wanted that day and what story I was trying to tell for this trail I really wanted to make sure I could stay focused on the height and then really take my time and taking good shots and not have to worry about the whole editing process so that's where she really came in and helped out a lot and then over time I just kind of stopped really caring how the the story was gonna unfold and trusted Kat to do it probably better than I was ever gonna do it I knew there was a delay and uploading but didn't realize it was so big so yeah there was a lot of questions and a lot of thought that I was shooting video and then I was uploading video weekly but actually whenever I started the trail of the whole plan was to go out with about a three week buffer so the first video went up three weeks after I was already on the trail and the whole point to that was to make sure that I got footage - cat in time she got the quality editing that we were looking for it all got up on YouTube and then it also gave me a chance to kind of get ahead and make sure that I was getting good shot so we weren't rushing that was kind of the whole plan in the beginning you know there were times where I had to get off the trail for a week like back in Wrightwood when I got an injury and then in the Sierra when I got snowed out so those buffers kind of they got smaller again and then we had to try to span him out a little bit further to get back to that three week so how long does it take cat to edit your work how do you send it to her with port internet in general it ranged from three hours up to 12 hours for sending we had to do a lot of different ways so the original plan was to make sure that every time I got into a town I was taking my memory cards and I was dumping footage through Wi-Fi or cell service onto my phone into a Dropbox account so cat could get it and start editing but poor internet service doesn't always make that happen so there were other times where I actually took memory cards put them in an envelope and mailed them to cat and then there were other times where I would meet up with snuggles especially in the Sierras where I would give the card to snuggles she'd put it in our laptop throw it on a hard drive and then she would spend the time uploading it to cat whenever she was in towns or coffee shop so wherever can cat discuss her typical editing workflow not only the cat and I work together but snuggles my wife was actually a huge part of the editing process as well you know with helping post videos and helping with a lot of the edits and working with cat aside from my involvement at all they were really the masterminds behind the the entire editing process but uh I transfer straight to premiere and I just went layer you get our light in there start cutting the clips I select musically cut the clips again to match the music then add the intro outro my snuggles takes it and figures out what parts we can cut it sends me a list of her edit then we'll just go back and forth until we're happy with that video and the crazy thing is a lot of times like you guys would see the video way before I saw it and when I saw it I was just totally blown away and like I said earlier the decisions that she and snuggles would make were way better than anything I probably would have come up with so that whole editing process definitely worked very very well how do you decide which of the many stunning views to include in the final video a lot of times whenever I'm shooting I'm shooting for a purpose so I don't just kind of whip out the camera and shoot willy-nilly a lot of times I'm actually behind the camera doing a panning shot or doing what we call the Ken Burns shot and I'm talking to cat through the camera telling her why I'm taking the shot maybe to kind of play a part in the story or maybe it's a certain mountain or a certain lake and telling her what it is so then she can use it as what's called b-roll or she's gonna put it over my narration later so really like deciding on which views to use I think you probably use just about everything didn't sometimes we'll get shaky ones and it depends if it's too shaky then we do have to cut that out but yeah and then a lot of that times like if I was doing a panning shot I would actually do it multiple times so I would do it like yeah so - like three times and then sometimes I would even go back the other way just to give her some variety of footage to actually use because you know at the end of the day I don't know what it's gonna look like when she receives it I'm just taking the shot and hoping it looks as good as it possibly can so I try to do as many as possible just to make sure that she's getting at least one shot that she can use and coming off of that question what do you do with all the rest of it talking about the footage whenever we first started the editing process

I used what's called a LaCie hard drive it's what I used to do all my video and I had given one to Kat to make sure that she took all of that extra footage and everything that was filmed to store on that because I always use it later for b-roll for other videos and for other projects

alright so now I'm gonna answer some questions about filming gear got a lot of questions about like the specific gear that I was using if you do want to check out a video of my everything that I used on the trail I'll put a link to my PCT gear video down here there is a section where I talk about all the camera gear that I carried but just to kind of touch on some questions that some people had which mini-tripod do you use for your g7x mark - so I actually used the PETCO ultra pod it's this little bitty dinky tripod that super lightweight has kind of three legs here and it was nice and compact so it wasn't real big but it was just enough to be able to set up some good shots for like walk-by shots panning but what I really liked about it was you can kind of hold it like a selfie stick so although shots from hiking and I'm talking to the camera it was me holding the tripod not the camera and then vice versa when I'm doing those panning shots it kind of works like a handle to where I can do the panning shot so that is again the PETCO offer pod how many batteries do you carry for your g7x mark - or do you always recharge using a power thing so when I first started the trail I had two batteries one

was always in the camera and one backup and then when I got to right would California which was about mile 350 I picked up another T batteries so I ended up having four batteries on the trail yes I did carry an extra battery to charge them but I never had to four batteries would always last me from town to town even through the Sierra whenever I was in there for a really long period half when I got caught in the snowstorm I still had enough juice in my batteries to make sure I had all the footage I needed what's up where did you use to edit the videos we do have an Adobe Premiere account I've joked in the past that I edit a lot of my videos with iMovie just because it's fast and easy but for these videos we definitely make sure that we use something a little nicer and cat is a whiz using Premiere a lot better than I am so we definitely used Adobe Premiere for this this project will you ever use a drone I do have a drone I've owned a drone for about a year now I didn't want to use a drone on the PCT in specific because it goes through so many National Forest national parks and national wilderness areas and a lot of those places you can't use a drone so there was really only like the limited places where I could get shots with the drone and to me it wasn't worth carrying I thought that I was able to get pretty good shots handheld and with the tripod and everything so no drone on the PCT however I do have plans on using a drone in the future with a project that we have coming up that we're going to be working on together how do you decide on what music to use in these videos Darwin ambient and flush rock style the we ended up searching for an epidemic sound and I just basically started looking for songs as similar as possible to what we found earlier yeah usually whenever I'm hiking I kind of have this soundtrack that's always playing in my mind as she mentioned I'm a big post rock fan so bands like seguros explosions in the sky and this will destroy you and etc etc so I really like big beautiful instrumental music and usually when I'm taking a shot of some mountains like I'm doing a pan I think she finally figured out what type of music I really love and kind of what inspires me out there and like I said earlier like whenever I got to see the videos they had already been out for a while and it always surprised me when I watched the video it was like the exact music that I would have put in there and sometimes it was better than the stuff that I would have thought for this this scene so can you explain music and copyrights on YouTube there are a lot of copyright laws obviously I can't just use like a rolling stone some organ explosions in the sky song so there's this really cool website and system called epidemic sound and essentially it's kind of like a membership thing you pay every month and it allows you access to as much uncopyrighted music as you can get your hands on and all different types of genres like Country or blues or rock or post raw ambient and the cool thing about it is you can actually go in there and you can strip stuff down so say you like a song but you don't like a certain guitar part in it you can download what's called a stem and take the bass and the drums and leave the guitar so that's what we utilize a lot in a lot of these videos and what I've utilized for the past year and a lot of my videos is going in there watching the video and then kind of listening to songs on epidemic and deciding you know what what the best song uses and as long as I'm paying the subscription I don't get copyright flagged could you make a blooper reel yeah I would assume that there was probably enough bloopers

the tripping over things or the camera not setting up right or me stumbling with words together yeah so keep an eye out for that we're probably gonna do a blooper and outtake reel coming soon all right so the last question that we're gonna answer is will you continue to work with cat in the future yes as long as cat will have me we have plans on working on a pretty big project next year that we're gonna tackle together so cat won't always do my videos I tend to do all of my other videos but trip videos definitely alright guys so that is it for this post-pc tqa thanks so much to cat for editing videos and putting up with me and letting me stay in our house right now thank you so much awesome awesome to work with cat on all these videos and hopefully you guys enjoyed my whole PCT series and you'll enjoy some of the future projects that we have coming up if you haven't had a chance yet go and check me out on Instagram I've been posting a lot of new photos lately of some of the things that snobs and I have going on throughout the week plus a bunch of pictures from my PC t3i if you found any value in this video go ahead and hit that like button subscribe to my channel if you haven't already and as always guys thanks for watching

At the end of 2014 my wife Snuggles & I decided to quit our jobs, sell 95% of the things we own, & leave our home town for good in search of adventure, culture, & the true meaning of happiness. We bought a van, traveled all over the country & hiked the entire Appalachian Trail (2189.2 miles). We are still seeking adventure in new places, meeting new people, trying new food & drink, & discovering all that we can.
