so I just left down Lordsburg snuggles just dropped me off and now I'm not here in the middle of the desert so we had a pretty good breakfast this morning I'm at a loss for words of the name of the place flaws but you should go there a lot of desert ahead of me some mountains but mainly desert [Music]
the snuggles dropped me off last night are we drove down last night about a four-hour drive from Albuquerque and we parked the van and then swooped in the van last night and this morning we got up had breakfast and just dropped me off the trail not too long ago and now so far it's definitely not what I expected it's not really a trail so there's some signs like what I just showed you back there at CDT time and it just kind of sporadically placed out in the desert as you can see in front of me there's not really a trail it's actually pretty cool out there right now the nice wind I'm sure most of you can hear on the Mike's picking up that wall noise but it's actually pretty cool somes a little bit hot but it's not - not too bad not too bad at all so I'm headed towards those mountains apparently kinda maternal little bit little trail --is-- little trailers
let's get kind of good sign and I know what mileage I want to put in today maybe 15 maybe 20 and it kind of also depends on water carrying three liters of water right now at Awards Berg no far it gets me an icon [Music]
good afternoon ladies open aren't you funny I like that probably why that's your friendly Yates [Music]
the harsh reality of the desert [Music]
beautiful though but also scary for water looky there almost 12 miles in and finally water but is a dead rat in it goddamnit sort of water at that last water stop and I forgot all my water filled up I it wraps water so I dumped all that water out and then I had to hike about four miles to here hoping that there would be more water here so I got pretty toasted as you can see from my leg um so far obviously it's only 15 miles so so far the CDT hasn't seen hard it seems harsh the weather is pretty harsh the terrains pretty harsh but there's no insane ups and downs yet we got here about three o'clock so slam that out pretty fast so pretend up took a nap ate a little something when I got up and a couple hikers just came into camp go for the hikers but I passed this morning so long I guess I'm gonna go mingle
cuz you know that's what Darwin does care life
so yeah good spot we'll see what tomorrow brings
check out this old mineshaft nothing says Wild West like an old mind that is so cool so I sold it in years ago you can kind of still see the whole intern scent of the mind so I just came up out of that Valley I can't way down in there but uh you know kind of put the old mineshaft and then these old stone structures that used to sit there it almost looks like it was an old mining operation kind of in in and out of this valley so you know there might be gold in them hills but finally there's some climbing yesterday was all flat desert hiking and others actually I'm going up in elevation quite a bit and then it looks like it drops down and just keeps on going through the mountains I opted for pants today because yesterday I got toasted from the Sun my my legs look like lobster legs lobster tentacles so a little bit more sun protection today but I kind of have a little bit more shade walking through these trees yesterday was kind of all open desert so who knows it might heat up and I might switch back the shorts maybe throw some sunscreen on got a little bit of sunscreen on my face but yesterday I was just stupid I didn't put anything on this one for 15 miles of walking in the Sun we'll toast your ass cool and scary popped out of the flare on the trail I think I'm about 11 miles in for the day and lookie what I stumbled across some major trail magic turn the water gatorade there's some bag with food over here apples bananas cooler I don't know what's in the cooler somebody hooked up lights very nice in here oh my god there's beer ladies and gentlemen we have beer don't mind if I do amazing that Coors Banquet yes amazing it's you so much for who put this out here it's been a pretty long hot desert stretch today for a trail that's not supposed to be very traveled and not have a huge community around it this might be a bigger piece of trail magic than I've seen in one single trail magic on the 80 so Appalachian Trail you got a little bit of competition they know how to do it out here on the CDT suite Cheers
so today was a little harder than I expected
right after that trail magic it was just straight up about 1,500 to 2,000 feet so a little bit of an ass whoopin at the end of the day I ended up stopping at 17 miles instead of going to 19 so I stopped just short of mud spring I'm at a place called Jax peak super cool it was really inviting so when I got here I was already wore out anyway so I decided to stay so there's this old foundation of a building I don't know what it was but the super cool part about it is there's this old ruin fireplace that's still here so I've decided to build a fire kind of enjoy that for the night got the old tent set up over here complete change from last night got all these big pine trees a lot higher up so a little bit out of the desert still kinda desert II but kind of like mountain top alpine forest so I'm going to wind down enjoy my fire and eat some food there's a little bitty sistren on the other side of here has some pretty shallow water kind of murky kind of nasty but its water that's wet so I'm going to filter it out and I think I'm actually going to boil some water over my fire since I'm stove us and I'm going to have some ramen tonight instead of cold soaking ramen I think I'm actually going to have some hot ramen so what a treat
alright until tomorrow [Music]
check this out guys first natural water source of the trail I am so excited to see this so looks like I'm going to camel up I'm going to drink maybe half a liter to a liter of water and that fellow up on this stuff must be kind of the end of the snowmelt or there's a spring up at the top of this amazing coming down off that mountain you know there must have been snow up there about a couple weeks ago because there's snow a little north of Albuquerque so excellent I'm going to drink up on this sweet walking down this really kick-ass Canyon into my day 22 miles a big day finally there's still space some water our stream at the end of it you can see them just kind of I can in pretty deep sand it's really wild and went through here really cool where is the coolest campsite you could find at the end of a 23-mile hard day of hiking I think this is it
doesn't get much better than that that's phenomenal totally wasn't expecting this isn't expecting this at all I can await this in the middle of the desert super harsh desert hiking after I got out of the mountains and then rewarded with this totally wasn't 23 miles and some dinner relax for a little bit off to bed and then tomorrow go over city good morning it is day for the Wednesday
I believe so after my 23 mile day I had a really awesome sleep last night looks like a baby and I'm going to hits trillion or a road looks like I have a lot of road walking to do day so this was easily one of my favorite campsites of all time goodbye Canyon campsite thank you I bid you adieu
uh it's great I could probably stay here for a while alright with the icon I think my favorite thing about the Southwest is Canyon love canyons absolutely flows Kenyans are so magical like a different world like this oasis in the desert specially when I have water on them I really really liked him he's gonna have water on you know water is nice to have when you're in a barren wasteland of heat so I knew I was going to be doing a lot of road walking today but I guess you never really know what type of road so I've been about five miles and this and this stuff just like hiking and snow I just had to push the feet all around and everywhere I'm in some jeep tracks are truck tracks or something that sometimes I can walk in they're not too bad most of the time it's just all over the place so even though it's Road it's a lot harder than trail but at least I have something nice to look at still walking through this big old Canyon beautiful canyon walls all over the place Southwest really is amazing and back to civilization for a little bit so one big bummer about the CDT especially in New Mexico all these dirt roads there's a lot of wilderness a lot of private land that they cannot route the trail to so you find yourself walking miles and miles and miles down these dirt desert roads let's and let the Sun beating down on you you know he can make miles man is it boring damn hot I haven't even hit the main road so I have to walk down today I'll get up to us 180 or New Mexico 180 can't remember and then it's a straight highway walk for 13 miles all the way in the Silver City so I don't know if I'm going to be walking that for hitching it see what happens
might be a pretty deserted road so I'll be walking 13 miles in the Silver City regardless I have my headset on a beer and a nice hot sandwich like burger our fried chicken sandwich some sort of hot food I like going stove less but everyone smile I got to eat [Music]
you
[Music]

Darwin Onthetrail
At the end of 2014 my wife Snuggles & I decided to quit our jobs, sell 95% of the things we own, & leave our home town for good in search of adventure, culture, & the true meaning of happiness. We bought a van, traveled all over the country & hiked the entire Appalachian Trail (2189.2 miles). We are still seeking adventure in new places, meeting new people, trying new food & drink, & discovering all that we can.
This Channel has developed into a main hub for aspiring hikers & current hikers to gain info on a wide variety of Trail Topics. With a series of Trip Videos, Q&A, Tip Videos, & Gear Reviews, I aim to get you out on the trail and hiking more!
