Venison Poutine at the Off Grid Log Cabin, The Simple Life

Description

#logcabin #cooking #forest

Simplifying life at the log cabin in the spring, I spend the week cutting down dead trees and ripping them into boards, fuelled by calorie rich meals of venison poutine for dinner and venison skillet breakfast.

I'm doing something a little bit different in this video first of all I'm talking to you right now at the beginning of the video which is different than my normal format I like to do things quiet and I like to just reflect while I'm working and just work and enjoy the solitude of nature and the and the cabin the cabin life but this episode is a little bit different you're going to see me using a chainsaw to mill a bunch of ash trees that I found on the property that have been killed by an emerald ash borer invasive species here now I don't have a problem I think I've mentioned this before you've seen me use the odd power tool and you know I'm not such a purist and I'm not willing to do that but I got to thinking a little bit more as I've been using the chainsaw first of all the noise here is disruptive and I lament that a little bit of not know overly happy about having the noise hear that cabin on this such you know it's such a quiet property so that made me think about the complexity of the tools and I think that's part of the reason I'm drawn to hand tools and to building things with natural materials is because we have so much complexity in our lives these days and I think probably more so than any time in history that is overwhelming to us and it creates a lot of anxiety when things are so complex and we bring it on ourselves too if we look at all of the electronics we use now on the the tools that we use the vehicles that we drive there are a lot of these things I don't understand how they work I don't know how to fix my computer or fix my my truck so I have to rely on somebody else so that complexity takes a look at some self-reliance away from us but also creates anxiety because it's to me that that chainsaw when it breaks down it just stresses me more than if I just done something with hand tools to begin with so it has to be worth it when I choose to use modern tools or power tools or energy of any kind because of that it just adds that much more complexity to my life and there's other things that create complexity up besides choice and besides modern amenities so things like

you know mental illness in the family or other issues that that come up health issues that we may have her or people in our family have that we have to deal with each and every one of those starts building up and adding to the complexity it becomes overwhelming at some point so getting back to nature getting back to the cabin life and the simplicity of of hand tools and building with natural materials I think is my way of introducing anxiety and it reduces also that anxiety of the future of the you know imminent end of my life and I talked earlier in a video this week about getting a colonoscopy about getting some health tests on and the reason for that is that it reduces the anxiety if I know there's an issue that needs to be taken care of I'm getting it taken care of on the other hand if I'm getting my health test done and I find out that everything is clear that reduces the anxiety that's kind of under the surface that's always there because we're always concerned about our future health and how long we're gonna live and what our financial resources and are going to be like at retirement and so on so the more things we can eliminate that make us anxious the more peace we're going to be and the more happy we're going to be as a result so for Callie's the simple thing for her right now is getting out getting that stick in the water on the edge of the ice there this is the what I love about nature's getting outside and enjoying the simple things you know today there's not much else on my mind other than enjoying a nice walk along the water's edge with my wife and my dog I think that's what draws a lot of people to camping I used to think there's some I don't know I I knew it was about simplicity maybe being in the moment but I'm understanding more and more because we have that complexity in our lives and getting back to nature getting back to our roots and just doing things very very simply you know you're hungry you cook something out of fire and that's all you have to worry about you don't have you know answer phone calls or look at your bills or get back to work so it's a stress reliever so if you ever have the opportunity to de-stress or I think you should try to make the opportunities Kalli it's okay come here pop I think you have to I think it's important to prioritize our our sanity our mental health both in our stress levels and get back to simplicity get back to nature and enjoy beautiful scenery like this in beautiful places and they exist everywhere it's not just here in Canada not just here in the area that I live and there's just beautiful places everywhere so I encourage you to get out there and find those places in your area and it could be just one hour walk in the park it could be you know a week camping it could be could come in many forms and if you can share that with a loved one it makes it even better so Kathy can sheets she's damn banding my attention so appreciate you watching this one I hope you watch it to the end a couple of interesting things new things occur in the video and I think they're worth watching but either way appreciate you tuning in I look forward to seeing up the cabin next week take care [Music]

this part and look at that coming right off here so that is bone-dry back the awesome firewood but I'm going to cut it down and cut that into planks or stairs now the treads for the stairs and then probably if it's lighting off the top section I'll be able to use 4runner for the for the stair so I'm going to cut this straight down right now and see if I can make some planks out of it [Applause]

- hot

that's better a little bit cooler that vest from Tilly is so thick there's so many pockets in it that it's actually too warm it's I don't know it's like 10 degree no it's actually three degrees right now it's going up to eight degrees today Celsius but with that intense Sun it really reinforces the reason that I that I put this porch on the south side ideally I would have run the cabin this way because I'd like to orient to any buildings that I build in the past or present oriented with the Sun Sun directions so Sun crosses right here that's south so this narrow part it's not absorbing all that much heat because it's the narrow section it's only ten feet wide here where that section is 20 feet wide of the other dimension is 20 feet long so it would have been nice to have it oriented that way with like 3 or 4 windows across the front or two windows in the door which would have given me a lot more light and heat gain in the summer but just the way the land is here I'm really on a point elevated point here overlooking a creek down below so I just didn't have enough width to go this way got flatland if I had heavy equipment I wouldn't just leveled everything out and created a an ideal base but didn't have that luxury then anyway it's probably I should get a thermometer actually because it's probably 20 30 degrees right here right now so I am so I hope you're not disappointed with this video because this is going to be or has been a short spring video that really so basically this is a kind of an unproductive week it's started off rainy it was my birthday at the beginning of the week and then it's been really rainy snow tons of snow on the ground and now that it's beautiful I actually don't feel like doing much work so I guess the luxury of being here is that I don't have to so I'm going to catch up on some little chores like and these things are important too but just putting a coat of linseed oil on all my wood tools wood handles and stuff clean up a little bit and enjoy the weather just sit out here and soak in the Sun for a bit so there's a lot of cleanup to do now that's going to melt all this week I think it's going up to 12 degrees Celsius 14 on Monday and 15 on Tuesday or something like that so it's gonna be a beautiful week so I'm gonna just enjoy spring for a little bit because as soon as the snow melts I know I'm gonna have a ton of projects to do so that's the reason I didn't do much in this video not gonna finish any building projects so I'm not going to show you much of what I'm working on we'll save that up for the next video longer video where I should complete a project [Music]

maybe friends I guess sorry plan don't think Kelly's gonna agree with that she wakes up really good laughter so I'm going to wrap this one up right now I think but I really appreciate her but for watching and watching these videos to the end and if you aren't subscribed I'd really appreciate if you could hit that subscribe button because my content the number of videos I'm putting you out is increasing just because I just feel like there's a lot of stuff that I do during the week that people are saying they're interested in doing I'm not including them in the Friday video so I'm going to start answering more of your questions for one thing talk a little bit more about my gear my clothing and stuff cuz I get a lot of questions on that and just more of my what's going on in my life I want to share more of that so I'll put out videos two or three or four times a week and then we still have my main feature Friday videos where I do a little bit more kind of summarize the week whatever is not in those midweek videos so anyway it's a good reason to subscribe if you want to not miss those videos because you know what a tune in Friday but you don't know what other days I'm gonna be posting on and neither do I at this point anyway rambling on again so I appreciate everybody who's watching - take care have a great week I'll see you up at the cabin again next week [Applause]
