Whatnot Lake, Algonquin Park

What can I say about Whatnot Lake? It seems like a bit of a necessary evil to get to your destination, whether it’s Little Coon Lake to the northwest or McGarvey Lake to the northeast. It’s very moosey looking and it, along with the surrounding Lower Whatnot and Loader Lakes, is probably a popular feeding area for moose during the spring and summer.

The landing is muddy and shallow and littered with moose tracks, but it’s relatively firm so I I’m not sinking into the mud like I expect.

The weather is fantastic, and I find myself slowing down and wanting to linger at each new location, even on this little lake which does not have much to offer in the way of scenery, wildlife or game fish. I give a few cow calls, not expecting a response at this time of day, and I don’t receive one. When I reach the portage landing to McGarvey, I’m not surprised to see fresh moose tracks and the aroma of both moose and bear is evident to an experienced nose.

I’m getting tired now and looking forward to finding a campsite, cooking a hearty meal and going for a paddle around the lake in the moonlight, which is just about full tonight. With the clear skies, it should be splendid. Continue Day 1…
