Little Coon Lake, home of the Double Devil'e Staircase, is a small lake populated by Brook and Lake Trout, found 200m south of Big Porcupine Lake and 900m north of Whatnot Lake. Little Coon Lake links not only to Big Porc and Whatnot Lakes, but also to Dividing Lake to the south, a Brook Trout lake that is usually accessed from Dividing Lake Provincial Park outside of the Algonquin Park border.

Arriving here at the end of the portage from Big Porc mid afternoon, I was surprised by the relatively rare sight of a solo woman canoeist. After a short verbal exchange, I set out on the lake and am amused to see three canoes racing for the north campsite, one of only two on the lake and the only one suitable for a larger group. I assume they think I, or the other single canoe of two men coming from the south, am also headed there.

A short trail from a bay in the north end of the lake takes you up to Manitou Mountain lookout tower, but I don’t have time on this trip to make the hike.

The portage from Little Coon Lake to Whatnot Lake is a gruelling one – 930m of steep elevation changes, up to 36m from the low point, and appropriately named the Double Devil’s Staircase. In reality, the steep climb at the beginning is the only difficult section, and if I wasn’t so tired as I am at this point, I wouldn’t have found it overly challenging or noteworthy. But I am tired and my back and neck are sore from over 5km of portages today. Note to self – more trapezius muscle training and less leg work. I should know that by now! Continue Day 1…
