Jeep XJ Overland Build Ep02: Workshop & Tools
Description
We had a look at the Jeep in Episode 1, before we get into some of the build videos I thought I would give you a quick tour of the Garage/Workshop I will be doing the build in.
In Episode 3 we will be finishing off the bumper and fabricating some Tie Ins for the rear frame area.
Thanks for watching.
Big thanks to the guys at Ruff Stuff Specialties for providing us with some of their frame stiffeners, review and installment videos coming very soon -

Video Transcription
hi guys this microphone CQ bushcraft here and welcome to another video on the channel I'm not in the woods I'm in the garage and unusual sight possibly but we've had a look at the Jeep talked about it in the last video I showed you all the changes I've done to it and obviously covered the jobs I need to do to get it ready for the big trip that myself and Megan have got planned in the spring of this year so I've got a few months to get this work done and before I get started I wanted to just introduce you to the area where I do most of my work whether it be welding fabricating things this is kind of where I do all of the dirty work it's not my workshop riding leather work and things like that but um I'll show you around show you some of the tools some of the projects are got going on and then we'll get cracking
so this is just a small work bench for the quite a lot of my work here a lot of the tools I've got they're very basic tools they're just everyday tools most of this stuff just charity shops scrap piece of wood it's all just knocked together really and my tools can go in a toolbox and just come with me wherever I go so we've got various cutting discs and grinding discs with a grinder mallets drills various masks obviously got welding mask man ed torch dust mask it's probably the most heavily used bit of gear in this garage and full face mask this is by far one of the most valuable things in the entire garage a huge bucket of nuts and bolts and screws this is really useful and it saves me a ton of money go tool boxes sockets and other tool boxes this is a ball-joint price really useful this is a Halfords advanced socket set I'll show you that this looks pretty new but the socket sets actually been with me for quite a long time it's just that the box can be bought empty I bought this box empty and just put the tools in that I needed for it I've got a piece of foam and that just really means that if I gotta see something like an eel on it and it's really comfortable plus it stops all the noise of it rattling around so I've just put a lot of other stuff in in here really it's all Halfords mostly and they make a pretty good low-cost socket set got a standard portable toolkit and this is the box I want to be taking with me when we do our trips it's got a nice bit of the top that pops off stung by mash I've got this half-price
we've got relays we've got fuses we got bulbs all sorts of stuff a couple of spare injectors I think think I'll carry two I might just take one with me although it's highly unlikely that anything will go wrong with them because their hydraulic non-electronic injectors so they last a really long time inside there won't be much in this juice yet I mean we've got the ratchet phallus I certainly wouldn't take those over my other spanis but I would take them as well and various things in here wire cutters screwdrivers gasket seal but I think I'll go through this more specific let me actually come to it it's my living the garage tool kit and this has just got stuff I would never normally carry around with me things like spray paints I've got a couple of boxes there that were for the trip I might put some things in them we've got dial readers of various types has one there that does file and there's one that does millimeters or fractions of a millimeter angle finders that you might use first or doing the talk procedure on a cylinder head calipers these are electronic there okay actually the magnetized base as well copy of the slip or copper grease this stuff brilliant actually
and there are various paints that we'll be using and you know sometimes lubricants that I don't want to go missing so that's an LSD lubricant for the rear axle because the breathers blowing out some oil at the moment and I'll I need to kind of sort that out and top it up we've got a few things that are cool here they'll sprout up loads of scrap mail put a nice shovel slash Spade or spud 'el bit of a combination of the two quite nice actually i rehand 'old that nice long one get underneath the truck did I there's a high lift Jack they're not a genuine one that's a cheap hi-lift jack I only really use in the garage we've got some brake lines as well for the rear drum brakes that barely work and just various other things and here like recovery stuff on the ground so we've got like axle stones got Jack they're a 2.5 ton Jack also got a few axle shafts in the corner front axle and a couple of half shafts at the back there for the Dan of 35 under the table here we have some parts for the Jeep and been looking for that for ages and these are just a lot of different spare parts really some of these are probably carried with me like bits of radiator hose we've got a MAF sensor there I wrap them in cling film because it keeps the dust off them and this is a really dusty places carriage it's got poor ventilation but sometimes you just got to make do this stuff Oh rings lots of different o-rings there mainly floppy two pumps and stuff I just bought those spare sauce forever wanting them and I don't really want to buy a brand new water pump just for an o-ring which is something you have to do sometimes got an ECU there such a basic ECU giant capacitors in a serpentine belt auxilary belt we've got oil seals for the Danah 35 we talked about that obviously I have to do that job injectors shouldn't need those but those are just some spare parts for the heat some phase in which we will need to call upon in this series so on the tour from that's about it one thing I didn't show you is the welder got the bottle just there and the welders in EWN it's got a point six in it at the moment it's a really good welder actually it's not mine it's a friend of Mines he's let these let me borrow it really for however long I need it for to get this job done but I want to get it a lot of the world and done as quickly as possible really so these are some of the I've got going on at the moment the first thing we're gonna tackle is this bumper and this is the stock bumper but I've modified the ends by putting some more metal on the ends and just welding it all up to suit the cut and fold mult that I did on the rear quarter panel there that we we talked about all of that in the last video this is a swing arm tire carrier with a rotating top no I didn't fabricate this and if I did I wouldn't have used really really thick box section I mean this thing is so heavy especially with that full-size fat on the back as well which obviously will be take me on the trip but I might pop it on the roof and actually do away with this because I just find it to be so cumbersome really but it's very strong and it's got very strong mounting points as well so I hope you've enjoyed this video obviously a little bit different being out in the woods but you know you can't work on a vehicle out in the woods to comfortably and then you're gonna need a lot of potatoes and lemons to generate enough electricity to charge up the mig welder say thanks for watching I hope you enjoyed the video see you very soon in another one take care
About the Author
MCQBushcraft
I'm a UK based outdoorsman who started hunting and fishing with my friends when I was young.
Educating yourself about your surroundings and having the core skills to sustain yourself using your environment is a lost curriculum in the United Kingdom. We are well provided for, so well that "why do anything if somebody else will do it for you". This lifestyle has drastically disconnected people from having the knowledge and skills required to spend even one night in the woods and not get hungry.
I love being outdoors and have never lost the desire to learn and practice skills that I get a sense of natural connection from. Hunting hangs controversy in the minds of many, but in my eyes there is nothing more natural if you choose to eat meat. I appreciate that not everybody hunts in moderation though.
Thanks for reading
