Hunting: Pheasant & Wood Pigeon

Description

For almost three years now I have lived without buying shop bought meat. Hunting Pheasant and Wood Pigeon is a normal practice and a choice I made some time ago.

hi there guys it's Mike from mcq bushcraft here and welcome to another video I'm out doing some pigeon shooting today just from a property that I've been shooting on for quite a quite a while now maybe a couple of years not so much your natural environment but a nice part of the countryside and a nice place that attracts a lot of wildlife and at this time of year we're in winter here in the site of the British Isles not so much cold but more so damp and we've got a plant in front of me here on this tree English ivy and it's really the last plants of fruit for the season this late in the year produces a small berry pigeons are feasting on that fruit they're cashing in on that last crop of the year really the last natural crop of the year anyway and as a result you get a lot of pigeons landing in the trees and eating the fruit of the ivy and that's a an interesting thing really it's good to know what plants really produce fruits at different types of years when you're hunting because it gives you a good idea of what the animals are doing that you're actually after and when you actually shoot a pigeon and you open the crop up you can check that and just confirm whether your hunch was right but I've seen lots of them eating the ivy and I know that there are rains and loads of them are landing and all these trees around you've got a pond here and the pigeons are landing everywhere and I've just been sitting here for a short period of time just observing having a look at what they're doing where they're landing how they're behaving the wind the weather how it's changed from early this morning and it's starting to brighten up and the winds calming down a little bit and all of that works in my favor I've got the twelve ball shotgun on me today this is the feisty and it's chambered three inch Magnum of some videos buys it before

nice double-barrel shotgun quite short and easy to spin on a pivot when you're doing bird shooting like this and you need to move quickly and make quickly I'm using 32 grams sixes as well with rather 28 or 30 s that 32 s will be me fine just a little bit more lad I'm going to creep over there in a moment make my way around slowly see what I can get hopefully I'll get the first bird stationary in the tree any flyaway I'll see what I can get to the second barrel as the first one of the day nice healthy bird just enough of a window between those branches there to take it quite cleanly and we'll check the crop of the bird now to see what it's been eating so if we just take away a few the feathers here you can see I've already hit the crop just there it's already open and [Music]

you can see it's been eating some clover but also some wheat there so this will be what they're feeding the pheasants this time of year so not really a natural feed for it at this time of year but because it's pheasant season this is what they're putting down for the pheasant

so no IV berry I imagine that's just because there's something better available

just heard some rustling some of these plants that turns out it's a male pheasant quite a big cock bird as well still in season here so just manage to clip it as it ran and that is a quite a hefty bird actually big bit of meat so that's a bit of a bonus really while we're still in season and I'm allowed to take them on this property I'm not going to let an opportunity like that just run away after that's about four pigeons so I'll get that in the game bag and we'll carry on this presents cluster going first

here we go sliding over remain silt rubbish shooting classical's that's one anyway although the feathers and you'll find it there's another one no head on that one obviously got taken off in flight it looks pretty ragged but the breasts are in fact which is what we'll be eating so there's one more slice to pigeons and a pheasant today could have have a few more really in that last scene for our standing by that little pond there lots of easy shots but just some bad shooting unfortunately

[Music]

nice-lookin birth starting to brighten us of it now which is good bit gray this morning and to empty the game bag they're pheasants taking up too much room so I've just offloaded some of the stuff I've got in the truck I'm going to see what else I can get so that's another pheasant for the day two good-sized birds really as far as the pheasants go lots more around here as well I thought there was one on the far end there of the woodland alight chucked a stick into the bush to flush it out make it fly and a big Fox came straight out looked like it had something in its mouth but I won't know till I watch the footage because it all happened quite quickly and there was a pigeon flying as well so a lot going on really but two good-sized birds I'll get that in the game bag and we'll see what else is in store for the day

quite lots coming in to roost now as we're losing light and I'm just going to wait amongst these beech trees here it's quite a popular roosting spot for a lot of the pigeons that was one birth unfortunately it's stuck in a tree it's a real shame I can actually see it up there dead just on that branch they're just that more pigeons are landing as we speak I managed to shoot the branch and it came out the tree which was pretty lucky it's a nice-looking bird well guys I think I'm going to call it a day game bags getting heavy mainly because of the pheasant but this is a nice area to come and do some shooting it's not really like a natural environment in that respect it's more of a well-maintained property but I've been doing pest control here for almost a year or bit over a year now actually and it's a good opportunity for me to get food that I shoot myself and put it in the freezer but I'll put these in the fridge when I get home let them cool down and prepare them the next day that's what I generally do is birds I hope you enjoyed the video thanks again for watching and I'll see you very soon in another one take care guys

MCQBushcraft

I'm a UK based outdoorsman who started hunting and fishing with my friends when I was young.

Educating yourself about your surroundings and having the core skills to sustain yourself using your environment is a lost curriculum in the United Kingdom. We are well provided for, so well that "why do anything if somebody else will do it for you". This lifestyle has drastically disconnected people from having the knowledge and skills required to spend even one night in the woods and not get hungry.

I love being outdoors and have never lost the desire to learn and practice skills that I get a sense of natural connection from. Hunting hangs controversy in the minds of many, but in my eyes there is nothing more natural if you choose to eat meat. I appreciate that not everybody hunts in moderation though.
