you

hey guys how we doing today this is William Irish mess outdoors today we're going to be doing something a little bit new we're actually going to be looking at some knives and we're going to do a review on a couple knives that I actually held and it have used for one I just actually gotten the other one I've had for very very very long time so stay tuned alright guys so if you're wondering what's going on here with the iPhone being a on the table as well I'm actually controlling the camera with the iPhone right now it's really cool app that I've discovered with this new camera that I just got so it just allows me to a turning camera on and off and zoom in and zoom out you know just with with the iPhone app so I really uh I like that a lot it saves me a lot of time but that's just why the iPhone is on the table right now but the purpose of this video is to show you guys these knives right here and what this is this is a brand new knife from blind horse knives this is actually pre split this is what the old logo on it but be honest with you that really doesn't mean very much to me but this is the Pathfinder Scout knife that I just picked up and I've been using it for roughly about a week now

still razor sharp I've only honed it with a diamond rock launce still like I said absolutely razor sharp shaving your face sharp this knife from end to end on the handle I believe is 5 and 3/4 inch don't quote me on these gofer memory here and then the blade surface itself is 5 and 1/4 it's very very beefy blade really nice and the spine width is 5/32 like I said I might be off just by a little bit there but like I said I'm just going by memory here the reason why I picked up this blade as all you guys know if you guys watch my videos is that I've had the Pathfinder pls k1 for many many many many years and this knife has served me very very well I don't go anywhere without it this is what I would call my main knife and it's really good for chopping woods really good for batani I would say chopping wood I guess for going through wood taunting that the Scandi grind on it is absolutely amazing and I've had no problems with this knife ever so why would I switch to the path on her scalp well the Pathfinder Scout the edge on it is a flat that's a flat grind well actually it's what is it as a saber grind but the actual grind the blade surface is a flat grind that goes into like a modified scanty current and that's just more conducive than my opinion for some of the finer more detailed work then a scanner grind is that's going to you know I find with what's big fat scanty grinds that it's hard to get into certain places for real fine detail work like nah cheese and things like that it's not like it's not doable it's just with this grind it's a lot better so let me get this up into the camera so you guys can see it a little bit better just giving you guys the full profile of the knife itself we're going to do some random testing with this knife and show you guys how it runs on your cedar and birch and things like that we've got some river birch but the handle to this knife is absolutely amazing

you know this just like it's a little bit beefier than my pls k1 it's a little bit wider as well but I love that the handle the grip too that really just fits my hand like a glove you know I'm able to do some real powerful carving with it and I'm also able to you know loosen my grip up a little bit and do some real light you know feather sticks and get some real good curls off of it and four notches and things like that so fear for deadfall traps and things like that

this knife is an absolute wood hog as well and that's one of the things that the PLS k1 is with that Scandi grind it's an absolute wood hog and it just takes wood off unbelievably well and you know it's just planes wood you can ask for a better knife you know that there's there's pluses and minuses to both of these knives so I just you know depending on what I'm going out to go do is what I'll choose to carry but I think I'm going to be carrying the scout a little bit more but I just definitely wanted to show you both of these knife side-by-side so you can see the differences between the two now the pls k1 this is like I said my knife that I've been using and taken care of for many years now and you know I do blade maintenance and I buff my buff my blade and I use you know comprar strapping compounds and stuff like that to true up the edges and things like that so you know you do see that this is shinier than this is because I really haven't done very much to this you know I haven't that there's nothing that needs to be done with it but there's nothing needs to be done with this but like I said you know every now and then when this plate needs it I'll put some some Buffy compound on it that's why this is shinier than this but it's the same steel both these are the exact same steel oh one tool steel which is a very very good steel for bushcraft the only thing about it is is that it doesn't retain its edge like stainless steel but it's easier to sharpen than stating the stainless steel so there's pluses and minuses to both of those knives

all right the Scout has an absolute 90-degree edge on it and that's really conducive for you know saving my edge as far as you know scraping cedar bark and you know processing certain plant matters down and things like that and you know you could almost cut with that edge I mean it is really really sharp as far as that edge goes I mean it's not only good for striking a Ferro rod there's so many things that that that spine is going to do for you like I said the handles are absolutely great in my opinion they're a little bit more beefier than the PLS k1 handles as you can see a little bit longer as well so I mean I wouldn't exactly use this knife for chopping but maybe for some like if I'm making a bow drill spindle then I got a knot that needs to be taken out I can kind of choke down on that and get that knot out I do that a lot you know you don't need to ask for something like that you can just use your knife and just hack that knot off that's the only reason why I would go to chop with a little blade like this you know these aren't made for like chopping the notches in wood and stuff like that you know if you need to do something like I get a machete or an axe okay so as far as the sheath goes for the Scout I just got the basic sheath for this right now because as you guys probably would guess my buddy Adam can't draw from Voyager when the work is as we speak right now very hard at work making me a sheath just like my pls Kalon sheath and if he's watching this right now

get back to work no skid he's a really good guy if you guys ever have a chance to deal with Adam he's an absolutely amazing amazing god an amazing leather worker but yeah like I said he's going to be making me a sheath just like my pls k1 sheath so that's why I just got the regular basic sheath that goes with this I didn't get the Kydex one because it's more expensive and I knew I was replacing the sheath anyways so let's go ahead and put this to a put this knife through its paces and see what's going on with it alright well guess we'll start out with this piece of birch and sit out here for a while so it's pretty frozen we'll see what happens I've had this knife like I said for about a week they'd use it for a week with absolutely no problem so just get it on camera show you guys how the knife batons and slices and things like that

I'd say this knife really hogs would right off you know if I'm planing wood out for uh like a fireboard you know getting that real flat straight edge that I want for a bow drill set or just two real fine money stuff like making curls for a feather stick you know this this this knife is really conducive to do pretty much whatever I needed to do you know and obviously this is a really big blade so I mean you know you just have to have common sense I mean you guys skin a rat with it or something like that no I mean in fact I skin most deers out with my frontier valley my bigger knives I use for wood processing and for bigger tasks things like that but uh I could do pretty much 99% of all my camp tasks with the so the spite of this knife being just as absolutely 90 degree sharp as it is you know it's going to help me process barks like cedar bark it's going to help me scrape down that wood to get the nice fine dust that I need strike it with a barrel rock you know anything that I really want it to do

now that's just with the spine of the knife itself there's a really fun I bet a bit I could probably get those to go with a Ferro rod so whether I'm shaving a Juniper for its bark you know juniper cedar same thing or I'm processing some other kind of vegetable matter or fat wood or just trying to get dust you know that spine is just going to save the edge of my knife so I'm conserving the edge of my knife at that point so I'm not burning up the edge scraping barks and making dust on fat wood and etc etc you know that is the 90 degrees spine on this knife is just going to absolutely chuck fart very little effort put into it you know I'm not really putting too much effort into that you know if I really put some effort into it I'm really going to get a nice shower yes that's just another plus for that knife all right guys so I pretty much showed y'all that I could show you with this knife here in my backyard I've been using this knife for about a week now and I absolutely cannot be more happy with a knife my pls k1 has served me absolutely well over the years there's no argument that that knife is an absolutely great knife and it'll still remain to serve me in the near future as well but this is just another option for me I think this is going to actually be the knife that I carry from now on on a primary basis doesn't mean that I'm going to just throw my pls k1 in a drawer and never use it again that just means that I like this knife a lot and I think it's a it is an improvement on the field and one it is pinning on my opinion right on the line like I discussed on a Facebook post it's right on the line of being too big but it doesn't cross that line it's just big enough you know and it does all the tasks that I want you know and like I said over the years of using that big Scandi grind pls k1 I didn't want a knife that had a bit a bit of more of a refined edge on it like a flat saber grind like this does and like I said I just actually could be more happy with the knife itself the argument that I already know what I'm going to get is how much they cost you know they are rather expensive this knife on retails with the sheet that I got for $275 it is a rather expensive blade you know but just like my burl hunting shirt which everybody asked me questions well what's the shirt that that hoodie that I have long it's a real hunting shirt cost $250 you know but I've had that hunting shirt for three and a half years now and it served me absolutely well that's this the stuff you're going to see on my channel is absolute bomb oof shatterproof gear you know I'm not going to share with you guys anything that I feel is just you know maybe kind of sort of good gear or something like that you know I go out into the field at least a hundred days a year you know that is during the week during the weekends you know most of my time is how in the woods you know just ask my family I almost got shot either next I thought I was a burglar because I forgot what I look like but that's neither here nor there

um so I need for my use the use that I put on tools I need it to be absolute bomb-proof I need it to work when I need it and I need it not to break when I get the most you know if so I'm going to go for the more expensive gear you know if you not say they don't freak with the woods a lot but you know if you're going for a week trip out of the year or you know you go once every now and then out to the weekend you know to the forest you know you can kind of do the cheaper charades and you know you're the Kershaw's and things like that you know but when you freak the woods like I do and you teach classes and you go to different states the different was that you might not be the most experienced in you need your equipment to work when you need to work you know you cannot have that stuff failing on you what it matters the most especially in the middle of a class that would be quite embarrassing than me you know and I've seen a lot of knives break I've seen solved break in my classes Kershaw's snapped in my in my classes pretty much you name it I've seen it break as far as K bars Becker's I have seen Becker's break in my classes Chris Farrell on 101 yes I have seen Becker's break being butand with probably the first half inch tip snapped off and I was in one of my classes so you know I go with gear that I could sit there and pound on all day long all year long it's not even going to flinch at me and that gear means you're going to spend a little bit more money but you know you're going to hand that gear down to your kill

and possibly they're going to hand that gear down to their children with a story behind it this was your great Grandpa's this was your Grandpa's this was my father's yeah that's that's the kind of forward thinking that you got to think of when you're buying gear that you have a doubt long like oh man do I really need this $500 wool blanket you buy the web that's cool blinky you can do I really need this $275 knife depends on what how you're going to use it how long you're going to use it and how many times you're gonna use it do you want your kids to have it do you want their kids to have it yeah that's my mentality when I buy things that well at least that's what I tell the wife when I say hey I must spend $300 on a knife yeah but that's neither here nor there as well but um you know what I'm basically trying to get at is bomb proof gear is gonna cost you money if you want it to last you're gonna spend a lot of money on so any closing this has been William Myers look - outdoors hope you enjoyed this video and if you did I really appreciate it if you click Subscribe like in my video helps me out a ton I appreciate all your comments views and support hopefully we'll see you out in the woods

put the freaking thing into the ground zero at a nuclear you know explosion that is still gonna be their new net you're gonna see it on my side you're going to see a new sheath port made by a voyage or other works your new future unit will review in the near future if I could actually speak English so so I mean okay so I'm like I can't think right now I'm brain dead I'm just getting the video with that guy's just go get one bye
