hi I'm Paul curtly author of the leading wilderness bushcraft blog on the net founder of the award-winning frontier bushcraft and voted number one bushcraft instructor by readers of bushcraft and survival skills magazine I'm out here being out here on camp for a couple of days and when you've been out for a few days you start to feel like you need a good a good wash and good clean important to stay hi Jenica out in the woods and one of the questions I get a lot of the time from people people email in send me messages they ask how do you stay clean what do you take with you because people don't want to take a load of stuff because it adds weight to the rucksack but also they want to stay clean so in this video I'm going to share with you a few tips on what you can take with you and things you can do to stay clean and hygienic while camping for an extended period of time in terms of your wash kit keep it simple small and effective over the years I've collected a range of different products and things that work together very well but are quite small and compact and also then I use other things that I'll have with me in my kids anyway to make a really good setup in terms of keeping clean on a daily basis and over an extended period of time and here I'm going to share with you what I take in my basic kit I have the following toothbrush some toothpaste and here's a tip for you if you know you're going to be going out for a few days rather than buying those small toothpastes that cost quite a lot of money a little travel toothpaste save the ends of larger tubes that you use at home to take with you on trips and take some soap that's just a little container I found up the soap in some basic old fashioned soap take a comb here I have a small Swiss Army knife and on that there's a nail file and some scissors and a small small blade which is useful for keeping yourself and your nails and everything short keeping yourself tidy and there's also toothpick and there's also some tweezers so that's pretty useful thing to have in your wash kit and I also take a little roll of dental floss and your skin often gets dry outdoors so taking something to kit you your skin in good condition is a good good thing to do alternatively you might want to combine that with something that gives you some sun protection as well so something like this nice and compact feature your skin from getting dry and cracks and it also gives you some good protection from the Sun SPF 30 then if you want to get shaved a razor I've taken plastic razors in the past they tend to get broken and squashed in your kit what-have-you so I've got something a little bit more robust there admittedly it's a little bit heavier then in terms of shaving foam often people get bit confused about what to take I've found two really good products both of them work very well first one is this king of shaves and shave oil small packet and small bottle and that works extremely well you need a little bit rub it on your face and that gives you a good good shave without getting a rash the other one I found for those of you that are in the UK particularly from the body shop shave oil there and that works very well as well a little pump action not even an aerosol that's extremely good terms of shaving mirror then if you want to shave I use my compass don't take anything extra so I've got everything there that I need I can wash my hair with a soap as well if I want to but obviously if you're going for a longer period of time you might want to add some shampoo to that I tend to use a medicated shampoo it stops you particularly when you're traveling stops you getting any kind of infestations or scalp infections or anything like that so a medicated shampoo keeps the dandruff at bay that's a very good thing to take and that's my basic wash kit what I've got here this is my towel and that I put everything else on here so as you can see it doesn't take up a lot of room and it will all fit in this small bag here and keep the compass separate obviously but that will all fit in there then a couple of other things that you can use in combination in terms of getting washed one obviously is one of your water bottles you need some water to get washed and then the other thing is your cooking pot there we go and so you can heat some water up for a wash you can mix it with the cold and you can have a good wash you can wash your hair and what-have-you
one thing I find really useful for having a wash out over is a small bowl and the thing I take is this small kitchen sink that has the added advantage that it fits in the top of my Billy can there in the insert and this folds out very nicely like so and then you can mix you your hot and cold water in there and if you want to wash your hair or any part of your body you're going to Chuck water over your head you can just scoop that out and you've got a good way of not using too much water at once but getting enough out that you need and so that's an excellent combination that's something you're going to have with you anyway you're cooking port on your water bottle so this extra thing makes washing you can wash clothes in there as well and that's everything that you need basically what I also find really useful to take is a flannel really fit for standard wash good for washing your place in the morning and standard funnel is fine or if you want a more modern solution and one of these expandable dehydrating wipes is really good you
finally another thing that I carry this is a toilet pack you can see I've got toilet written on there and in there I've got toilet roll I've got some antiseptic wipes
I've got alcohol hand gel and I've also got a cigarette lighter or matches so burning the toilet paper and and in one of my other videos I'll talk a little bit more about going to the toilet outdoors and that's something else that I have in my packet and that helps with hygiene and that's it that's everything that you need even if you're doing quite a long trip you don't need any more than that and keep it simple keep it effective and keep it lightweight and compact and you'll that will serve you very well and I hope you've got some good ideas from that selection that I've shown you there I hope you found that useful hope it served you well if you enjoyed this video please go to my website
